Alright so Im visiting my family in Alabama over thankgiving week and Im dyin to climb.... I look on rc.com and see HP40 listed and its only an hour drive. So Im set. Not expecting anything but a few crap sandstone boulders I drive out there. First thing I see is some barn with some a-hole guy taking 3 bucks from me to climb. I was ready to head back.... I suck it though payed my three bucks and went in to the area. All I can say is wow. Horse Pens 40 Is the best bouldering area I have EVER been to. Some of the most fun problem I have ever done were done just a couple says ago there. The only thing I have against it is I didnt get to stay longer.... Anybody else in this place have a dying passion as I do now for HP40? Unluckily I had to drive back home and the place is now 13 hours away from my house in Tulsa... . Just thought I let everyone know that HP40 is a place to put on the roadtrip list.

Yep, God must have been having a great day when He set all of those stones down on top of Chandler Mountain. HP40 rocks, no pun intended.

No it wasnt the guy who owns the land, unless that guy is oh say......13 years old. The man keeping the land open to climbers is a man touched by the hand of God himself, and is in no way, shape, or form an a-hole.

Dude who owns HP40 freggin rocks. You wanna hear some crazy stories, wander around the place at night and you'll get more than you bargained for! He'll tell you the whooollleee story of how he got that place, and we're damned lucky it isn't full of houses and blasted boulders. Throw down your three bones happily and climb some sweet rock.

HP 40 really is a great place. You camp right across the road from the boulderfield (which is huge). The quality of the rock is incredible. Clean showers and bathrooms. Restaraunt and store on site. Super friendly staff. $5 gets you a load of firewood delivered to your campsite. And a liquor store close by, on Rt. 231. Mike (the owner) told us they are working very hard to keep the place climber friendly. They have a gated entrance with sensors, if anyone comes in who is not there to climb (i.e. redneck partiers) they are right on them and will kick them out. If people come to just walk through the rock formations, they make them park outside and walk in. That way their vehicles never get close to the climber campsites, you don't have to worry about theft or vandalism. Or cars kicking up dust and disturbing your camping. This place is a tremendous resource for the climbing community. Go check it out, happily pay the folks, and climb on. I'll be back in the fall.

If you're a climber and you're anywhere near HP40 and you don't stop something is wrong with you... Place is amazing! It also has really nice bathrooms compared to a lot of the climber campgrounds I've stayed at. I was there during my spring break and I gotta say that after chilly nights the hot showers in the morning were some of the best I've ever had. The Shultz family is really cool too.

Yeah, HP40 is pretty awesome, I actually rebegan my climbing there. I had done a DAY of climbing a couple of years back and am now getting into it. HP40 showed me the way, the truth, and the light. I need to go camp there for a couple of days its only an hour or so away from my apartment....
