Before asking for sponshorship you have to come up witha trip that will put you in the public eye. Maybe not teh general public, but at least the climbing public. Sponsors rarely give you money unless they will get something out of it, such as free advertising. Sponsorship is really hard to get. Grants are easier to get, and it is helpful to distinguish between the two when you start asking for money. Try the AAC, and other climbing organizations which set aside money for climbers whpo are trying something new and unique. Keep in mind, people don't give you money for something everyone's doing.

no offense man, but good friggin luck. I've been mountaineering since I was a wee lad, and I've got no delusions about being sponsered. If you want it that bad, go on your climbs, take tons of good photos, post them on sites like this one so that someone might notice them, keep a well-organized and richly-detailed journal of your ascents, try to work for an outfit like REI or some other gear dealer or retailer, and hope you get lucky.

I have also been mountaineering for a long time and the first key to getting a sponcer is actually hitting some peaks that are popular or super hard and get public eye.

I'm trying the same thing. I don't have a great idea either, and I'm not good enough to get sponsored for sure, but lets see.... bdclimber, if you're interested we can compare notes on the research :-)

Bag the second ascent of the Ogre (Baintha Brakk). That'll get you noticed.

I've had good luck in the past with BD and Forty-Below. Not cash certainly, but 50-60% off retail prices. Forty-Below let us try some of their new designs out for booties and other stuff on a Denali trip for free. Local climbing gear stores will often do the same thing if you take pics with their store banner or something.

You need an angle though. We had a guy who was a 3rd year resident doing "high-altitude pulmonary studies". Something that would get published. And yes we actually had to do his little tests the whole trip... But hey, 50-60% off a Bibler BombShelter that you get to keep is worth it.

Unless you're Alex Lowe.....er bad choice.... Mark Twight, noone is going to give you anything just for a basic expedition. Not with mutants running up Everest and other guys soloing El Cap in a few hours.

Hey - Its not impossible to get sponsorships. You will likely have to sell yourself pretty hard and play by other peoples expectations, but if your short on means, it is one way to climb. If you have your own means, use them first - you may actually enjoy climbing more that way.

I have been fortunate to land different sponsorships over the years in another sport, and suggest you start small and work your way up. If you have any community contacts, can align yourself with a good cause, or can get in the local press for your accomplishments, the money will be out there. Just remember to speak to the busines owners heart - ROI.

Good luck.

You are not mistaken. The Ogre has already received a second ascent by Thomas Huber in 2001.

I noticed from another thread that you're 16 years old. I'd go for the AAC grant first. There's one specifically for young mountaineers. However, you can't just go on some mountaineering trip. You have to be doing something unique.
