In reply to: In reply to: In reply to: No shoppy at Wal Mart........bad for the community. speaking of community, can somebody whisk this away to the forum where it belongs? This is not a community topic. It is a topic about buying or modifying gear by shopping at non-climbing stores (i.e. Walmart). interesting. looks more like an anti-walmart flamefest to me.

It has been hijacked. Oh well, off to Wallyworld to get my pictures developed.

If you think Walmart is such a great store, why not try working there for a while. They don't tell their employees exactly how much $ they will be making, instead refer to some mysterious "zone" pay system, which pays you differently based on what job your doing. Regardless of which "zone" you're working in, it is never much more than minimum wage. They also routinely tell their employees to clock out when their shift is over, then tell them to go back to work to finish up whatever they had been working on, without pay. Walmart puts three people out of work for every two jobs they create. Walmart doesn't just disrespect its employees, it disrespects the United States of America as well. Even when we had an economic embargo against Burma for extreme human rights violations by the military regime that seized power in that country, and overthrew the democratically elected government, Walmart continued to import products from there through Canada. What patriots. What a great store, with great prices. You have to ask yourself, what is the true cost of saving a few dollars here and a few pennies there.

I live in a used to be small town in the white mountains about four years ago we got a wall mart and I can't stand it.... It has practically killed our small buisness. Being from an area that is suposed to atract tourists to it's majestic views, beautiful cliffs, and ski resorts I don't see how BIG PLASTIC WALMART signs are helping any. I have lived there my whole life and have seen it degrade in old fashion value. Arrrrgggggg :x the whole thing just makes me sooo upset.. I encourage you all to read the article given on this website. I am going to make a consciencus decision to try my hardest not goin in there from now on.

In reply to: In reply to: It has been hijacked. Oh well, off to Wallyworld to get my pictures developed. true, but i think the hijacking warrants a move to community since the conversation is no longer about climbing. It is still about climbing in this fashion: Climbers shop and buy from Wal-Mart. Soon, if the Wal-Marts have their way, shop such as Desert Rock will close (they are planning it!) and the Big Boxes will taker over the outdoor industry as well. Climbers need to know that their support of Wal-Mart is anachronistic to climbing. This is a serious topic that all climbers, outdoors enthusiasts, and anyone that cares about the economic future to consider. Moving it community relegates to the backwaters..... This is a more relevnat topic to echo accross the FR than Religion & climbing. Religion is a personal issue. This is Global.

Drkodos. Many items at wal-mart are not junk. Here are some items I bought at Wal-mart, yesterday. Would you please direct me to a store that has these items for cheaper or similar price. Oh yeah, and of higher quality. Zone Perfect Bars 200 watt light bulb Mach 3 replacement cartridges Nivea face scrub Suave shampoo "Clearly American" (flavored water) GM Anti-freeze Windshield wiper fluid. Where is the defect in quality? Answer: There is none. The one consideration that is completely missing from your argument is expedience. Many people (families) dislike shopping and simply want their products. Wal-mart can expedite the shopping process. Dr. Please respond with your usual pomposity. It makes even your good points flounder. (It's kinda like sports stars referring to themselves in the 3rd person after a good performance)

Well......whew.......talk about your ideological struggles Wal Mart......they just seem bad. Sure, a lot of the basis is anectdotal.....but they clearly don't want to be a part of the commerce of any particular community, they want to dominate it.....to the exclusion of a lot of the values most people and communities seem to value There seems to be a lot of arch capitalists and others here that have reasoned through the pros and cons (or maybe not) and decided that the Wal Mart way is the kind of world they like to live in. The enormous downside, the economic displacement, the burdens evoked are okay by them............ I like free markets too.......i like competition and the innovations it brings......but a free market doesn't give a damn about you, your community, your community's quality of life......only you can do that...........can play or role indetermining that outcome...........with the way you treat you neighbors and your environment, with your votes, and with your consumer choices As far as the idea of buying climbing gear from Wal Mart......equipment where performance and durability are a premium...........instead of lowest price? I don't think i'd be putting any Wal Mart gear on my rack. I'd leave that stuff for the other suckers
