Hi there, I've just started climbing and I feel that I am doing good progress, but i consider myself a little too heavy. I'm 182 cm long and my weight is about 85kg (187 pounds). Is that too heavy to get somewhere, or can I keep my muscle mass but focus more on finger strength? I can do 20 pullups or so but on small grips I just feel to heavy :) Often the climbers you see on photos looks pretty thin. /Daniel

Hi If you're more into boulder your height/weight proportion is ok. Here in Spain, some of the top boulders are very thin, but others weigh just as you do, because they have big muscles. If you like routes, the typical sport-climber is thin. But if it's not your muscles that weights but your bones, you can't reduce it very much, if you don't want to loose strength. That's what I think, but I'm not an expert, probably somebody will help you more Have fun climbing

I don't think you're too heavy, look for 2 photos from "casco" there is a guy nicknamed "el gordo" he really is heavy but he can climb pretty well, in fact he bolted several routes in la huasteca. So keep going!!!

if you have the strength to pull your weight then you will be fine...it's all about technique (or as I'm told). I weigh at about 230, there's not too many other climbers who weigh that much I think. I only know a few, if that. Just have fun while your climbing.

I don't know how much he weighed, but Wolfgang Gullich was a pretty big guy. Considering he was probably the best climber in the world while he was alive, that's saying something. :)

if you lost 10 or 15lb you would definatly climb harder, you wont lose any strength either. try putting a 10 lb weight belt on and climb.imagine that weight being taken off. i'm 6-3" and 175lb which is about right height to weight for climbing

6' 7" 210 lbs and working up the bouldering scale. Its all relative, keep climbing, focus on technique and the weight will take care of itself, muscle or otherwise. KT

I would not worry too much mate, I'm 100Kg and 6"2 and I can climb 5.9-5.10. Although being lighter will help to an extent on overhangs and steep routes it should not affect a beginner too much. DanielB

daniel_ First off I don't think you are too heavy to climb. I myself am 6'-3" tall weigh 230 lbs. and climb 5.10's. Second, If you can, losing body fat will help your climbing, as long as it's done in a healthy manner. The amount of weight you can lose will depend on your body type and composition. If you are already lean built (6% body fat or less) than you probably shouldn't try losing any more weight. If you do a large majority of it will be muscle and that will cause you to become weaker. Third, you being new to climbing I would focus on climbing technique and overall conditioning, not just body weight. By working on your climbing and general conditioning you will lose weight, get stronger, and become a better climber. Fourth, I do not believe there is an ideal height to weight ratio for climbing that can apply to everyone. I myself am quite heavy (230lbs, 6'-3") but am by no means fat. I simply have a very large build. There is no way possible I could get down to 175 lbs. without endangering my health. Just work within the limits of your own body and have fun on

I personally think your weight sounds reasonable for your size. I consider myself a bit large for my size (5’3”+, 85lbs or less… do not really know for sure), most of my weight of course is muscle. I’m no doctor but several others have pointed out that you don’t want to lose to much muscle and I have to agree. You really should not condone that, as that is liable to put you off very bad. But really you seem normal, my uncle is really into mountain climbing and rock climbing and stuff like that and he’s about your size and he’s very good at it, so I wouldn’t worry about it unless it’s actually not muscle making you heavy. and if that's your body type... not much you can actually do.

I'm 5'2" and weigh 135lbs...which is just a little over the ideal weight for that height. I guess I'm just really large!! eek!

It is not weight that is the issue. It is "useless weight" or plain old out of shape "fat". For example: I am 6'0" and usually weigh 172lbs. Right now I weigh 182lbs. (Just haven't worked out too much, oh and too many beers.) My onsight level drops about one whole number with this extra "useless" 10 lbs. Also, my fingers tend to get hurt more easily. Of course I have a justification. I consider it "resistance" training. When I finally get off my ass and loose the 10 lbs. my climbing will dramatically improve. I hope.

mcheshi... when you know only half the story, what you think and say is based on that. i hadn't read that post so i didn't know your situation and i apologize. for me, yeah my dad told me i was fat and i was as a kid up until i hit college. it was then i actually started dating and getting into more sports like climbing which totally boosted my self esteem. but up until that time i was around 19 or 20 it really sucked. and trust me, i know what its like going to shrinks...oh yes. keep climbing and keep posting! and yea, i'm sure most americans can stand to lose a few pounds (aren't we the fattest country??) as far as climbing and weight...i've found that my weight limits me in my advancing in climbing to some degree which is why i'm working out constantly trying to get better. i guess its all just part of the sport! cheers all!!

When I started 12 years ago I was 180. Now with 4 kids and a 9-5er I'm 210. That 5.10d that was my fav. is all but impossible to do. Not because of the 30 lbs. but because I only get out 20 times a year. Every time I do get out I spend the whole time thinking "just loose 20 and I could do better." Regardless it's still fun and now it's almost as much fun watching the kids climb what I can't.

mountainchick82, It's okay... you didn't know. and about you being 'very large' i don't see other people like i see myself, so you would probably look normal to me. my self image and esteem is slighting warped at the moment, but gawd knows midschool does that to everyone. :):):) mieke
