I am getting ready to start getting gear to go toproping. I know the basic stuff that is always mentioned, like harness, shoes, rope, chalk bag. However I am looking for a more detailed complete list of what is needed for basic toproping. Example the number of carabiners including locking and non locking and information on slings and webbing. Things of this nature. Any information would be appreciated.

Here is what I take to Mineral Wells. Two (2) pieces of webbing @ 30 feet each Two (2) pieces of webbing @ 15 feet each Four (4) non-locking carabiners (oppose the gates on two, and run the rope through them. The other two are for a second top-rope or to pull gear to the top of the rock) Two (2) Locking carabiners (for belaying) Two (2) ropes Enough harnesses for at least one climber and one belayer. Hopefully the other people climbing with me can fit in one of them.... Climbing shoes of you got em. That should about cover it. Any other suggestions? Here's what I use to set up a toprope... Two lengths of static line (PMI, 11mm, 25 meters long each,) two lockers, four non-lockers, and two long sections of cordlette (18 feet each.) And a towel or old sweatshirt to pad the trees. Best, JRB

If your top roping from two closley spaced bolts all you need is 2 24" sewn runners and 4 locking 'biners. For anything else you may need lots of webbing and more 'biners.

For TR, normally 4 lockers, 4 D's, a few shoulder runners for a sliding X, and a cordolette made of 7 mil by 22 feet.

Woah, you guys have a lot of gear for TR. I guess it depends on where you're climbing, but the most safe place to be learning TR is a place where the anchors are bolted. That said: Rope (I have a 60m 10.5 nondry. Some people suggested static, but if you're going to ever move on to leading, I'd say go for the real one) two quickdraws (for the bolts, that's all you should need) cordelette (for bolt anchors that need equalizing) one locking biner (for the cordelette/rope tie-in) four non-lockers (three for bolt anchor points to attatch to cordelette, one to back up locking biner for rope/cordelette tie in if you so desire) a locking biner and atc for belaying That's all you should need for the most part. I started out with even less and just mooched, but this is the most common setup I've found that will also add to your sport/trad set up as you go. always use two biners to clip the rope in, I prefer two lockers.
