Or faculty. But not family of faculty. My dad teaches there and could use the wall, but he doesn't climb. I can't use it, so the nearest climbing for me is earthreks- 30 minutes away vs. 10 for the Academy. It sucks.

The gym is quite good and has a lot of potential, I have climbed there a few times whenever I get the chance, they really do need to get a route setter as most of the routes have been in place since 2000 or when ever they installed it and most of the new climbs are so contrived and way off when it comes to ratings, I climbed a “5 6” that I would rate 5 9+ or 5 10 because you either need to be a dyno machine or be at least 6’ 8” to get through the crux section. I suspect that most if not all the new climbs have been placed by inexperienced teenagers with big egos where skill level is not taken into account when they make a particular climb harder than another. One could have a field day there setting routes, I saw about 400 or so climbing holds still wrapped in plastic that have never been used. Brian, if you read this, I’m still open to helping out with setting a few routes this winter where skill level counts and not shear brute force to get up a 5 10 or so!!

i agree- most of the ratings are way off, in the bouldering cave as well as on the wall. mostly sandbagged, by up to as much as 3 number grades, or 4 or 5 V-grades in the extreme cases. it seems as if difficulty is valued over quality of the route, height over skill. i climb there when i can, also cos it's free to me for another 3 months, but our dear wall is sorely in need of maintenance and some route-cleaning. we'll need: 1) putting up new holds/taking down broken ones 2) re-rating all the routes, retaping some of them 3) fresh start on many boulder problems, ratings, etc. 4) quality control on routesetting (nate this is your problem) a number of climbing bums there will soon gather for a cleaning of the bouldering cave. date to follow and soon TBA.

all hands- cave is now continually updated. some guidelines if you want to set a boulder problem: 1: first ascender gets to name the route 2: route setting requires some experience. earn it first. 3: don't modify routes that aren't yours- eliminations can be separately taped. 4: use tape sparingly- it costs money

all this is scott childers, i'm a TAD ensign at the naval academy...i was in charge of the wall 1st semester and have been pretty active w/ it for the last few years... the naval academy rock wall is a wall built really only for midshipmen and limited use by faculty/staff back in ~2000. compared to places like earthtreks: yes, it sucks. the routes are sandbagged, handholds polished, it's not as clean as it could be, etc. BUT, we are funded by the PE dept who doesn't devote a lot of $$ to us to begin w/. if we want to make this a good wall, we need volunteers and hot shots to come out and clean, route set, teach their experience, etc. oh, and if you're worried about being able to climb on the wall and you think you might have a connection, talk to someone like myself, ens. travis hail, lt katie sheldon, or somebody w/ experience around the wall, the reason why there's limitations on who can climb is to ensure safety, ie. if you know what you're doing, you'll prolly be able to climb. lemme sum it up: -i'd like to get something together where we get more experienced guys in there to help me and others set some routes. -i'd like to organize something where we clean the wall, etc. -->any volunteers? -if you have questions, write me at scottchilders@hotmail.com thanks!

hey, but if you can swing it, climb USNA! it's free, it's still good, and it's right here, ie. not a "30-minute drive" talking to my friends who pay ~$10-$15 each time they climb at a wall, i feel pretty happy that i "work" around a wall that's free to climb and provides 50' of varied bliss
