I'll be doing a good bit of toproping this summer, and I'm planning to buy a decent amount of webbing to use in building anchors, but I'd like to pick up some runners as well. Should I buy nylon or spectra, and what are the advantages of one or the other? Thanks. Any other advice would be appreciated.

For top roping off of gear or trees, etc. use 1 inch nylon webbing.

For a couple of bolts, use a couple spectra slings.

Any preference for webbing vs. cordolette/static rope for building a toprope anchor? FOTH seems to prefer static, but the anchors I've seen in my very limited experience have been 1 inch tubular?

For most toproping off of trees and boulders, I go with like 60' of static rope. Makes great 2 point anchors and it's really easy to set up. Tie the one end around one anchor, tie two figure eights on a bight over the edge of the climb and clip the rope biners into these, finally clove hitch the other end to the last anchor with a locking biner (back it up with a figure eight). The equalization happens with the clove hitch, which is easy to adjust. The 2 knots in the middle create independent anchor points. Totally bomber and takes plenty of abuse. 1" tubular webbing works well too and it's cheap. You really can't go wrong with either for just toproping, but I prefer static line. One more hint for the static line, small lengths of 1" tubular webbing slide well over 11mm static rope and protects the rope when it runs over an edge.

As far as nylon versus spectra runners, go with spectra. Lighter and stronger. Mammut makes killer 8mm full strength runners that are light as hell. However, 1 or 2 nylon runners is useful if you need to set up a friction knot with the runner, like a klemheist.
