I'll be in South Lake Tahoe for the long weekend, and I'm looking for directions/hints to good areas. The closer the better as well, since I'm either going to be hoofing it or bumming a ride off a friend. I'll be right around the highway 50/89 area. Anyone got any tips? I did a search of the forum and didn't find too much in the way of directions or where stuff is relative to that area.

In reply to: i think the closest place The boulders @ pieshop are right down the street from him, within bike riding distance. Stop in at the sports ltd in the "south Y" shopping center and look at the Mike carville lake tahoe climbing book for directions to the boulders.

South Lake is great on the 4th.

Pieshop is the place you're to be. Just past the airport on the right as you leave town. Turn before you get to the golf course. Park on the side of the road and hike up the boulder strewn hillside. The boulders start almost next to the road side. There is some good shit there. A pad is nice for the harder/higher stuff. A lot of things there I cannot crank, for whatever thats worth. Lotta stuff there I can crank too, for that matter. I think its better rock than Bliss, though the established probs seem to be significantly harder at Pieshop. Or maybe there are just more moderate boulders at Bliss. Bliss rock is that crumbly ball bearing type of granite and I don't care for it all that much. Pieshop is mostly bullet proof, though the closer to the airport you get the more grainy the rock. Cheers DMT

I would disagree with Pie Shop being better. Some of the best boulder problems in Tahoe are at Bliss. I don't know the name of the area but it's the one with all those overhanging orange faces, with some fantastic aretes. Most are high and the best are V3-8. The rock in this one area is bettter than most of Bliss the this cluster of problems is completely stellar. Just remembered a name, the warm-up boulder is called The Brain. A bunch of stellar V0's.

Right on hasbeen. I defer to your greater experience in the matter. Truth is I prefer more far flung and remote areas these days. Haven't been to either in a couple O' years. DMT

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm leaving for Tahoe in a few hours - I hope to check out both areas.

They are both pretty good, but I would lean towards Bliss.
