I have recently experienced a wierd pain in my palm. It kills when I have my arm extended at shoulder level and then start to lift my hand. I would go to the doctor but I know he would tell me to not climb and that is not an option

Ask your doctor to give you a referral to a sports medicine clinic. The physiotherapists there should be able to tell you what the problem is, and how to cope with it while continuing to climb (and you should consider the option that this may not be a realistic answer ... if you cause permanent damage and can never climb again, how does that help you?). - Seyil

Ummmm, so just what are you after? Someone to tell you that everything will be alright? Take a break, yes it sucks not climbing but the longer you continue to push yourself through the pain the more damage you are doing and the longer the inevitable layoff will be when you really fu@# yourself up. Most of us know how you feel, but rest and maybe going to see a doc or physio is the best option.

I agree- general practicioners often give painkillers and anti-inflammatories and send you on your way. I also agree that resting is your best bet, annoying as that is. If it continues despite real rest, a visit to a hand therapist or hand specialist may be in order... or just get a referral from your primary to go directly to a hand therapist and they should be able to help you out... Does it hurt when you don't raise your arm but stretch your wrist back with your elbow extended (like at your side)? Any numbness and tingling? It could be a forearm muscle or nerve irritation/inflamation... Nerve seems more likely if it happens when you raise your arm. Try tipping your head away from your arm when you do it and see if it gets worse... It's hard for anyone to help without seeing you and questioning you in person. Don't let it linger and nag for months without treatment. Be good to yourself.

I had what sounds like a similar injury last fall. I was climbing at the gym and was trying to stick two fingers into a hold and only one finger made it. I pulled a tendon along the palm of my hand that links up the finger I used to grab the hold. Based on many other injuries that I've seen doctors and PTs for I implemented a regimen of icing and deep tissue massage. My various PTs have suggested icing 3 to 4 times per day for a week or two and then 1 or 2 times for another week or two. I think it really speeds up recovery. For the deep tissue massaging, apply some skin cream or other lubricant to the palm of your hand. Then, clasp your two hands together with fingers interlocking like someone might if they were praying at church. Then, using the thumb of your good hand, dig into your injured palm and rub with a lot of pressure along the tendon or area that hurts. My PTs have always said to do the massaging first and then the icing. Good luck.

You probably did strain a finger tendon where it runs through the palm of your hand. If you do not stop climbing for a while (at least a few weeks) is isn't likely to get better. The other advice about icing, ibuprofen, etc is good too. Curt

So what is happening with your hand? Did you do as the most logical above recommended and stop climbing for a while? Is it better?
