Does anyone know whether the campground is open yet at the Leap for camping? I know they have been working on it (tree removal and such) and had it closed for overnite stays - anyone been there recently and can give us an update? Ben

I was there Sunday and there were people camping. There were also a lot of trees down. The gate was open and the parking lot was full.

I called around the 4th and the FS said it was closed. People were camping anyway but I heard they got kicked out.

I was there on the 19th and there were quite a few campers. Most were just waking up when I was at the trail head.

So, has anyone been there recently (past few days) and seen the work crews and are there any signs still up saying "no overnite camping"? Are they still working in the campground? Thanks to those who have replied already, but more info would be appreciated.........I want to climb and camp there this week...Ben

Like I said I was there yesterday. No work crews, it was Sunday. I did not seen any no camping signs. My partner said last time it was closed the gate was locked.

we were there a month ago in mid june, in mid week, amid all the talk of LLCG going to be closed for at least a month and all the FS conspiracy theories. spoke to the bartender at Strawberry Lodge and couple of climbers hanging out there and found out that the campground was actually open. we camped for 2 nites. there were only 2 or 3 cars in the parking lot the whole time, probably bec others are unaware maybe. and rangers came and went with no fuss so, check with the bartender at the lodge. he seems to have the lowdown

we were there a week and a half ago and there aren't any signs saying don't camp but campfires and even stoves are not allowed until they get rid of the dead wood. Not sure what the schedule is for that. We used a stove in the parking w/o any hastles. There are some alternate campsites a little ways down 50 if need be that don;t have any access issues.

i was there last saturday and didn't see any "no camping" signs, lots of people and plenty tents. in my opinion the camping in phantom spires is better anyway

As of today August 3rd, the campgrounds are closed again for a week. The parking lot was closed today and the sign said the parking lot would be open tomorrow, but camping is prohibited for a week starting today.

I received an email about this earlier. Expected closure is for 14 days (Starting Aug 3), maybe slightly longer because fire bans limit the equipment usage. A PDF containing detailed information: http://www.fs.fed.us/...oversleap_update.pdf General information about Eldorado National Forest: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/ Amber's Quick Summary: Overnight camping, campfires, and parking have been restricted for public safety while downed trees are removed from the area. This is expected to take 14 days, but fire restrictions limit equipment use and may extend the project by a few days. Bathrooms and water system are still open, as are hiking trails and routes (except for ones affected by the Falcon closure).

So where are we now with the Eldorado Forest situation? No camping at over's I assume. No fires. No candle light vigiles. No dealing with the FS.? PS BS USFS Late, CF

In reply to: Ummm.... Will the camping area be open mid-may 2005......I know this is an old forum, last year it was closed down when my brother and I were there. Hope its open this spring I thought they finally opened it last year. There's plenty of informal camping nearby if it's closed.
