How fit, physically, do you have to be to even begin to take the basic rock climbing lessons?

Thats the great thing, you can be a fat ass and still rock climb! You may be doing 5.2 slab jug tugs but it's still fun, eh? and if you find that out of your leauge, you can take up Ice climbing, where a hefty ass is an asset

If you can walk up stair cases 2 steps at a time, or lets say climb a ladder, maybe even do a pullup or two, you can climb. Basically, anything around a 5.2 rating is simply large steps up onto ground size foot holds. If you can pull your own weight once in awhile and are able to make moderately large steps your fine. Most anyone can climb, considering the fact that your not physically impaired. Try a lesson and see how you like it. If your just trying it out for one time, some outdoor excursions and indoor gyms have special prices for that kind of thing.

There is no real limit, if your able bodied you can climb ... the test will be if you are passionate enough to persist with climbing to get into shape ... this only you will know, you can tell everyone on thing but know the other.

Have a go, you'll love it

I would agree with all that was said. However, I would caution this with regard to physical fitness: you can really hurt yourself if you try to crank too hard at the beginning. Go easy. Find out how to get fit to match your desire to climb higher and harder. Just don't try to crank too hard at the start and there is a great temptation to do just that at the beginning. The adrenaline and enjoyment and challenge will kick and those energies can take you beyond your physical ability. Okay, I can do that 5.5 slab; let me try that 5.8 in the corner. Aha, there's a hold that I could by stretching just a little further. Injury! Be smart and climb healthily; climb for fun and climb for long.

P.S. Be especially careful if you try or start bouldering. Lots of stress and strain on the body there.

If you can't start by onsighting at least a 5.11, then forget it... ! Just kidding! Climbing appeals to everyone! Big or small we take 'em all!

Any one can climb im a fat a** and I can climb a 5.13 and used to be able to do a 5.14. Sure I work out 5 to 7 times a week plus do some sort of cardio, at least 3-4 times a week but im still fat and have a beer gut. But seriously just go climb, over time you will get in better shape.

I have climbed with a guy who was heavy and smoked. He did fine. Just do follow all the good advice so far. Start out easy, don't worry about number crunching, and most of all, just have FUN doing it.
