Hey all you route setters... just wondering, how much do you get paid for setting routes? per route, per hour, per move?

What about your qualifications, experience, certifications?

I'm a route setter at my local gym and have been setting for quite a few years. I've been to a few setting clinics. I'm certified by USA Climbing to set for national comps.

At my local gym qualified route setters get paid per route. Avg. of about $35 per route depending on the grade (but each route has to be dialed in and then approved for quality)

At the gym I go to I heard they get paid $20 a route and believe it or not that was a recent raise!

...Or even if you get free membership or gear discounts for routes you set at a gym. Lemme know...

I work at a small gym one night a week where I get $8.50 an hour and discounts on all sorts of gear (5.10, red chili, metolius, etc). My job entails setting routes, but that is not all that I do.

What state do you live in?

Does hourly pay you more, or per route? I guess that is the question as I bounce between gyms. I have worked at gyms that pay by route $25 - $50 depending on the height and angle of the wall panel. But also at gyms that pay by the hour ($8.00). Where is the incentive? If you can set fast and quality, per route.

I can appreaciate a gym that appreciates the setters. It is a tough job any way you look at it.

Late,
CF

Paid?

There's only one guy that gets paid.

The rest of us are volunteers.

It's a not-for-profit gym.

As a multipurpose employee, I get $6/hr for whatever I do-- belaying, routesetting, etc, plus access to prodeal forms and a free membership.

Our exclusively-routesetters get $10/route.

At the gym I work at (WI) I get a free membership, approx. $50/month, to set two routes and two boulder problems. I can also get deals on gear and such but I have yet to take advantage of that. It's sad really, I can't even afford discounted gear. :(

It's all good though, It's worth the work just for the free membership. That, and I enjoy watching other people work on my routes/problems.

Where are classes on route setting/certification offered?

$35/per route!? Sweet weeping Jesus! How tall are the walls?

I work one night a week for -- I think -- around $8.50/hr. I'm not sure and I don't really care. It's not my main, or even secondary, source of income. I do it mostly for fun and partly for a free membership. I could also get a free membership belaying for b-day parties, but needless to say, I prefer setting routes.

...
45 to 55 feet.
So that's about 30 to 40 hand moves + foot chips
... so it is quite a bit of work.
