Austin is a much more interesting place, IMHO. Austin has a great night life (live music) and the best climbing in Texas (outside of Hueco Tanks). Go there!

I don't know how much climbing there is in the Dallas area, but there's plenty in the Austin area, not to mention a lot of other things to do as well (music, nightlife, etc). Depending on what kind of climbing you're wanting to do, McKinney Falls has some good bouldering and both Reimers and the Greenbelt have a lot of sport routes - all of those spots really close to town.

if you are limited for time, the Barton Creek Greenbelt has some good sport climbs on limestone, and McKinney Falls state park has sweet bouldering. These are your best options for in town. You'll have to drive an hour or more to get to other good areas on the periphery of Austin. Do not, I repeat DO NOT come to Dallas. Aside from having no climbing, it is the source of all that is evil in Texas, will suck out your soul, steal your money, and leave you wheezing, sweating, and run over by an H2. I am not joking.

In reply to: I am not joking. Ha ha ha! Well, they have at least one really good Italian restaurant in Dallas. That's all I remember. Check out http://www.texasclimbers.com. They have topos and directions for many climbing areas, including the Barton Creek Greenbelt and Reimer's. http://www.erockonline.com has info about Enchanted Rock.

if you want to do some routes go to reimers ranch and if you want to do some bouldering go to roger's park. http://www.bloodyflapper.com has a lot of info about bouldering in texas.

The only place I've climbed in Dallas is the Stone Works climbing gym near Beltline and I-35 in Carrolton, apparently "the world's tallest indoor climbing gym". I have to admit climbing a 121 foot route on the inside of a grain silo is an unusual novelty, but for marginally more stimulation go for the routes on the outside of the silo. http://www.texasoutside.com/dallas/imagemapframes/stoneworksdallas.htm -s

Sport: Reimers Ranch (near Austin), the Greenbelt (close to downtown Austin) Trad: Enchanted Rock, 1.5 hr. from Austin, near Fredericksburg, also has tons of bouldering and some sport routes The nearest places to climb near Dallas would be Mineral Wells (top rope only?) and Wichita Mountains in OK (trad/sport). Wichita Mountains are spectacular but I'm not sure about the weather that time of the year

NEVER go to Dallas, if its in your power. Old ladies go to Dallas. Go to Austin. They set you straight, E-Rock for granite (think Vedawou), or Barton Creek green belt or Reimer's for slimestone. Just one day, too bad.
