PETZL You get what you pay for. I have spirit biners that have the same silky action today as they did 10 years ago. (Don't worry, safety freaks, most of them I only use for accessory biners and occasionally bust them out when I need a stack of free biners for a wall) I suppose it is time to get some new ones but the old ones still feel like new.

I'll second Petzl, there harnesses are the best, crabs, their rigging gear is the best in the buisness. There are rumors that the are gonna bring out some cams and possibly rocks to rival BD and WC. BD is nice but alot of their gear is medorcre (sp?) There harnesses are ok, cams are cool, rocks are rocks, biners are to small (better are WC and DMM biners) their clothing is ok but their packs have to much crap on them and the harness systems on them are cheap and poorly designed. Their ice gear is wicked though :D Flame me for it... Rob

In no particular order: BD, Petzl, and Metolius.

I'll take this approach: If all gear companies were to cease to exist except one, which company would you choose to remain? My choice has to be Black Diamond, as they carry the most complete line of high quality gear. Metolius would be another good choice. Right now, Petzl just doesn't do trad gear, and Wild Country doesn't do much soft gear. You can be a complete climber of any discipline on only BD gear (although you'd have to lug the heaviest cams on the planet). I don't know that you can say that about any other company.

Luckily we don't have to make that choice. I think the largest percentage of my gear is BD, but I think that is partly due to being an American. What is the Euro perspective on this? Also according to my wife technical clothing is considered "gear" as well. I would tend to agree with her if it wasn't so enticing to pass off those new Arcteryx pants as belonging in the same budgetary category as the pair of slacks I bought for work. So anyway, another favorite "gear" company would have to be Patagonia. Ryan

BD and DMM overall. but i tend to subscribe to the theory that no single company is great at everything, you have to pick and choose to get the best of individual pieces. i go with BD for making lots of great general workhourse gear and DMM for offering some killer products which i believe to be head and shoulders above others.

Why ask? Are you looking for an exclusive sponsor to cover all your bases? In that case, DMM or BD. If you want good gear all round, shop around. BD's cams are great, as is their ice gear, but after that, they only make average gear. DMM wallnuts are my vote for nuts. I like to slot their nuts. Metolius curved hexes and micro TCU's And surprise surprise, that’s what’s on my rack.
