Bishop absolutely sucks! Stay away and tell your friends to stay away. It definitely isn't worth your time.

My bet is that they said "stay away" so that less people will be there.

With Owens River Gorge just a bit north and buttermilks bouldering in the back yard, it has everything I've ever wanted. Plus the learning curve is so high there with so many climbers to learn from in the area. Beautiful area for Turkey Day

I was fortunate enough to live in Bishop from January to March of this year, spending most of my days bouldering at the Happy's and the Buttermilks. It is a great, albeit small town with pretty much everything you'd ever need for a long visit. The people are nice, the local climbers are very cool and the area is beautiful. The boulder fields are immense, with several lifetimes' worth of problems. You can find just about every style problem at nearly every difficulty level. Some of the 'easy' problems are actually a bit more challenging that you'd expect, sometimes the road out to the Buttermilks is a little too muddy to get down without a jeep, and sometimes there are crowds at some of the 'classics' (Ironman, etc.)...but other than that, it's as close to perfect as I could have imagined.

In reply to: Thank you for the input. To the fellow that said it isn't worth anyone's time, may I ask why? i think he was indulging in a little sarcasm.....honestly some of you guys over the pond let it pass by like sh*t off a greased shovel. btw - would love to check out bishop....so i hope it's not over hyped!

bishop is timeless - truly one of the great areas. i really don't think any climbing movie has ever done it justice but I think it would go great on freqeuent flyers, that way people could see just how world class it is. props to Bishop locals for keeping things clean and for being nice people. I've always enjoyed my stops there and plan to keep going for years.

I do think it's overhyped. It's a great area but it has suffered from the stigma of being The Destination bouldering area, The Next Hueco, Bouldering Mecca, etc. People are too quick to attach 'Best' labels to things. It's kick-ass bouldering with a good variety and great access. It's also a cheap place to hang-out. I'm looking forward to going back.

make your own judgement - it's at least worth that but to answer your question, no.

the bouldering is an absolute chosspile, especially the Happy's. They are named that because you are happy to leave. the Sad's are named sad because you are sad when you arrive. The buttermilks leave a taste in your mouth like sour buttermilk, there are freakin' fisheramn everywhere... The place sucks!

With Yosemite so close, great year round bouldering and climbing, some of the best alpine rock anywhere and low population density Bishop seems ideal. As long as you can find a job I guess.
