good oatmeal recipies

it's gotten chilly in my part of town. so I bought some oatmeal for breakfasts but I kind of realized (for the 5th time) that I'm not too keen on oatmeal.

does anyone have an interesting recipie I might try to develop a taste for oatmeal? I'm using the kind that you boil for 5 min., not the powder kind.

add honey & raisins. bannanas. chopped dried apricots. maple syrup is good too. I really enjoy just about any kind of fruit and/or syrup, brown sugar, etc.

Monster cookies. Keep eating them until you like the oatmeal.

For breakfast you could just get the ones that come with stuff already added and in single serve packets.

You will need a loaf of rye bread, a pound of bacon, and three eggs.

Toast the rye, cook the bacon, fry the eggs, and throw the oatmeal to the dog. Good luck.

Move to Quebec or the north eastern US. Load up on maple syrup (the real kind), pour indiscrimately over your oatmeal. Selenium and sugar in every spoon. It's a good thing.

Porriage (or oatmeal) is a staple for me when camping. I usually have lots o brown sugar, lots o raisons, and a pinch of cinnamon (the key is to add a lot of this stuff so all you really taste is sweet cimmamony raisons).

I like oatmeal; it's a good way to stay warm from the inside! Anyway, my oatmeal gets some dried cherries tossed in for the last minute of cooking. Put in a dish, sprinkle brown sugar on top, and some white, just to have *more* sweetness. Then, I put powdered milk into the cooking pot, add water, and swirl it till it's mixed(or regular milk). Hot milk, instead of cold.

Then, the most important part.....feel the warmth, like I am a little woodborning stove, keeping me warm.


Much better than a cold bagel or a power bar.

yummmy oatmeal only taste good ur 8th day on teh trail while backpacking then its reall good...

Milk and molasses. That's the only way to go. Brown sugar works, too.

i thought oatmeal came in those little bags that already had everything in it except for milk....

that being said, my favorite by far is the cinnamon bun flavor. Cavity-licious.

I dice about 4 or 5 prunes, and divide into 10 piles.

5 or 6 dried apricots, divide up, add raisns, dried cranberries, some tropical trio (diced papaya, mango, pineapple). Chop a deluxe nut mix.

Place in 10 baggies, doesn't need refrigeration.

Every time I make oatmeal, I throw a baggies worth in. It's great on camping trips, it adds so much flavor, vitamins and fiber to even instant oatmeal.

I'm hoping to find a supplier of mixed diced apples, apricots, cherries, strawberries, pears, etc.

Have it traditional scottish style: PORRIDGE.

Oats, half milk, half water, cook it for 10 minutes then eat it with salt. And you can pour the rest out and cut it into slices for tomorrow too.

Mmmmm, sliced oatmeal sandwiches, hold the onions and relish.


Seriously though, my favorites are real maple syrup or chopped apples. For camping those single serving packets are really convenient. I agree with kimmyt, the cinnamon-bun flavor is damn tasty.

The key to eating oatmeal if you don't like oatmeal is to make it taste like something else.

Cookies are the best way, but maybe a bit too far out of bounds.

next are the additives. get creative...
brown sugar, sugar, maple syrup, honey, molasses, vanilla, walnuts, craisins, raisins, (any fruit pretty much), butter, milk, creamer (try the flavored ones).
A touch of salt helps a lot.

Another thing I have found that helps is to cook it for a while so that the matrix gets creamier. (but it makes clean up a bit harder).

Has no one mentioned chocolate? Shave your fave chocolate into the bowl, hot off the stove.

It still might taste like warm soggy cardboard, but at least you're eating warm soggy cardboard with chocolate in it.

Oh aye, chocolate! Too right bonger! Even better than shaved chocolate is chocolate spread like Nutella. Stir it in. mmmmm.

(obviously I'd like to pretend I'm a big tough highlander who eats porridge every morning with nothing but salt, but Scottish cuisine leaves a lot to be desired and I draw the line at the inside-out sheep)

I didn't know people really relished oatmeal.

after reading suggestions, visiting www.mrbreakfast.com, and a little experimenting, this is an oatmeal recipie I can live with. though it's maybe about 10% of actual oats. thanks, I will probably experiment more with other suggestions from peoples' replies.

-make 5 min. oats as described in the package (just about 1/4 cup worth of oats).
-add 1-2 tbsp honey
-add 1-2 tbsp peanut butter (mmm, nutella would work here too I think)
-stir some more
-after you remove from heat, pour in some granola (about a handful)
-then pour in fruity trail mix (about a handful)
-stir some more
-eat quickly before it gets chilled (or add more hot oatmeal)

Remember how I chopped up all the dried fruit and nuts, divided it into 10 piles and stored it in baggies. Since I eat oatmeal no more than once a week, this lasts a long long time. But camping, it supercharges breakfast. Try it.

At home I use McCann's Irish oats, mix 1/4 cup oats, 1/2 cup water, add the fruit/nut mix, and microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. Then stir with a small amount of milk, add some brown sugar, mix up creamy, then mirowave for another 30 seconds.

It sounda complicated but it isn't and it is so good for you.

There's a scottish oats my friend in Boston uses (McGregors?). I doubt the prefab oatmeal packets are very healthy, but are good camping.
