Hey guys, thanks for all the replies! That's exactly what I was looking for.

As an aside, is it worth bringing along an axe for summer scrambles (Alberta rockies, 3000ish meter summits with little snow), or is it generally used for higher/snowier/icier assents?

That all depends on your intended route. If it is a scramble in summer condition without snow, then I do not bring an axe. However, in spring, fall, and winter conditions I will. Many scrambles in Alberta do cross snow slopes, and some boarder on being easy general mountaineering. It all depends on the route, but many in the rockies will have a general axe on 60+% of their scrambles (less if they typically wait for 'ideal' conditions).
