Hey, I am new to the forums and fairly new to the climbing community. I recently have started getting more and more into bouldering, but will only push so high before I get too scared and bail-out of a problem.
Thus, I have recently been wanting to invest in a crash pad. However, I am rather confused as to which brand or type I should start out with. My upward spending limit is $250 but would prefer to purchase one in the $150 range if possible.

Everyone I know seems to love the Organics. My first crashpad, which I used for almost a year, was 2 deck chair covers tied together with ratchet ties. It sucked.

mine was actually a Madrock Madpad. But i think i'd rather have 2 deck chair covers tied together with rachet ties...

I own a Metolius pad, and it's treated me well for a long, long time. I would shy away from the biggest and thickest pads - if you have any kind of approach, carrying the thing will suck.

I am not too concerned with carrying it as the spot I boulder isn't 20 feet away from the parking lot. I also do a lot of backpacking in my spare time so it's no biggie, but I will consider having a look at the metolius pads.

My two pads are a Metolius Fat Bastard (now known as the Boss Hog) and an Organic Simple. It seemed like the Metolius broke in faster, and still feels softer, but I'm not certain that I did as much bouldering after I got the Organic as before. However, the flap thingy on the Metolius has torn in a few spots, and the shell has shifted around the foam a bit. I'm not a heavy boulderer, so that sort of wear isn't really expected. I've fallen on a lot of Organic pads over the years though, and I definitely prefer them. I've never seen an Organic try to fall apart.

It sounds like the answer to your problem is not a crash pad, it's workin gon your fear. Bigger and better crash pads will not enable you to push through your fear. Only pushing through it will get your head in the right place.
Crashpads are for trustafarian hippies and mama's boys.

You're probably right, but I'm so weak that I can't make fun of the turtle people as they walk down the crraigeway and place 3 and 4 crash pads down for an 8' high V2.
When I do boulder, it's harder than that, and I don't need a portable mattress.
I once heard a guy whisper to his wife as they were walking down the carraigeway and passed two boulderers carrying pads....he said "I didn't realize the gay ones carried mattresses into the woods to practice their hot man love". Funniest thing I heard all week!

How were you in proximity to hear a guy whisper this, without a) being that guy, or b) being one of the boulderers with a pad? I believe he's calling BS on your story, and that's why it's homophobic.

I got a metolius stomp because it's cheap and a good pad, the organic full pad is a similar style but way better quality. If you can afford it get the organic.

I think the $33 US difference isn't big enough to pick a crappier pad simply for the savings.

Just a general question: I recently got a Madrock madpad, and in terms of getting it a lil less firm, is it fine to jump on it alot? I'm just hoping that won't damage it, or even compress it even more. Any ideas?

Best advice? Don't buy a madpad. Basically, you want to prolong the firm period as long as possible because the softening accelerates quickly into bottoming out.
