Funniest thing I heard all week! RR The irony here is that he's referring to an area of the Gunks where most of the classics consist of hard moves through roofs-- which, internet big mouth or not, is just stupid without a pad. He's either a troll who's doing it wrong, or some mouth who hasn't touched much above a V3 traverse.

The Mad Pad flourished when it was the cheapest, biggest pad out there. It's heavy, with a fairly durable cover, and cheap. The foam sucks--it will be soft by the end of your first average season. The Metolius Stomp (formerly called The Cheap Bastard before Marketing realized this might not be the best name for a pad purchased by lots of younger kids spending mommy and daddy's money) is a fairly decent pad--I found one for $125 a couple years ago and it has performed much better than the Mad Pad. However, for a multi-year investment, spending an extra $40-$60 on an Organic Pad would be my personal choice if I were buying today. Everyone I know who has one swears they're the best thing ever. Also, if your foam wears out prematurely, you can add a sheet of plastic that MEC sells (you have to be a member, and shipping is from Canada).

Reading this thread with interest as I'm about to purchase my first pad as well. Has anyone had experience with Edelrid products? The Mantle pad (http://boulderingpads.com/edelridmantel.aspx) looks pretty choice as you can zip the two halves together either side-by-side or end-to-end, making either a 47x45in or a 91x24in landing area. At $169 it seems like a bargain also, but I haven't been able to find any reviews to check on durability, foam quality, etc. Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

The foam seems to be better than the Metolius pads and they carry pretty well. I'm not sold on the longevity of that zipper, but who knows, maybe it's plenty strong.

Does anyone have any information on the Climb X Triple X Crash Pad? Specs say it's 5 inches thick, looking to get a higher problem pad with a lot of surface area. Something comparable was the Mad Rock Triple Mad Pad, but it was about 80 bucks more expensive http://gearx.com/...ml?feed=P_Base_57456

I actually agree. My point was simply that it wasn't the hEARING that could be problematic, it was the repeating. RR was just washing his hands saying i just heard it so it's not ME. If he believed it was homophobic he shouldn't have retold it. His reply made it seem like he agreed it wasnt ok to tell the joke but he was innocent since he "only overheard it"...

I have the large Edelrid pad. The foam does not stay in place. I got the pad used so take it with a grain of salt. The zipper and the outside of the pad is nice and sturdy.

From what I've heard, the Organic Full Pad is supposed to be the best. I haven't seen a single 4 star or lower review yet, they're all a perfect 5. It costs $185 and I'm set on getting that pad once I save up some money.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the BD pads. I have a BD Drop Zone and its been great. No shifting, the foam hasn't softened or shifted and the cover is solid.
