Anybody know anything about climbing being inducted as an official Olympic sport? All I have been able to dicifer is that it is in the last stage of the approval process. Would it be a summer or winter sport?

IF it becomes an Olympic sport, it would be a summer sport, unless it was ice climbing. Winter sports must utilize snow or ice.

Climbing..... Oylmpics?? Might be a difficult thing to judge, as it is a game without a score. Spectators seek to reward the winner and think of them as the best. Contest with self, in dramatic isolated forms of nature, not contest with each other. comps are so lame

This is probably referring to speed climbing, since that form has the highest visual impact in terms of watching it on TV. And since the Olympics has little to do with actual competition anymore and much more to do with sponsors trying to cash in on an athlete's limelight (yes, I'm cynical, and yes, I'm right), I frankly don't care.

Yea i agree with everyone who said they dont think it should be in the olypmics. Then we get more attention, more noobs, and more people hogging up all the routes at the local crag. they are already crowded enough.

wait a minute- whether or not you think climbing should be an olympic sport, you can't say it's going to become glam like snowboarding. competition climbing has been happening on a world-level (and televised) for years, and it hasn't caught on the way snowboarding has. and i would argue that climbing makes a great competitive sport because it's not one person against another, so much as it is one person against the climb (not to be cheesy). if anything, climbing in the olympics would only promote a very healthy kind of competition.

lemon_boy wrote: seems like climbing has existed just fine for a long time without being associated with the olympics. climbing + olympics = gay i have to agree. it's not that i am saying that having climbing in the olympics is the sin of all earth, but it has been around long enough and doing just fine with out it being in the olympics. I am afraid that people are gonna miss the true meaning of climbing, much like i think that people today have done with snowboarding. i feel that with sport that hold a bigger risk with them (i.e.-rock climbing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX, etc...) that there is a certain process that needs to be taught rather than watching it in the olympics and going "i can do that!". you can, but learn the rules first.

Being somewhat American centric, the general US climbing community is largely unaware of the world wide acceptance of the sport of competition climbing. The international organization which governs indoor climbing rules and competitions is the International Federation of Sport Climbers. There are currently 48 countries who are members of the IFSC. The IFSC recently amicably split from the UIAA (Union Internationale des Association d’Alpinisme). One of the main objectives of the IFSC is to get climbing into the Olympics. The IFSC hosts a significant number of international competitions which can be found on their web site www.ifsc-climbing.org .

I hate it whenever I see ads that have climbing to get customers' attention. Picture this... Climbing idol + TV + SUV's/cell phones/videogames/whatever. NOT cool...

Actually I had heard climbing was already an Olympic sport, just not one that was an "included" Olympic sport - the difference being obviously that they do not include it in the Olympics. The IOC meets and determines the events for the forthcoming Olympics, and I believe the events are set through 2012 in London - the 2016 have not been set so there is a possibility of climbing being included then.

yah it would be cool to watch olympic climbing but i think climbing is more of an activity than a sport. i've done some comps and i still think climbing is more about hanging outside with some friends and challenging yourself. it doesn't need to be in the olympics.

Put climbing in the Olympics and then we won't be bitching about perma-ticks and the arrogant fools who pretend this is a sign of respect. No. Putting climbing in the Olympics will bring BIG TIME cheating to our sport. The tickers will have to up their 'game.' DMT

Good one!! I wonder how many current greats could compete if they were held today?? Heh heh. Imagine interviewing Nate Gold in a similar state as Dosage 2 when he talks about the weather in Southern Illinois??? Seriously though, think of some of the potential spin-offs from a higher profile for climbing that would come from Olympic inclusion: Climbing would become less of an unknown thing to the wider community. I know this makes some of you think of jam-packed crags etc but what about the advantages of people in decision-making positions having a better understanding of the sport as it truly is? Sure they'll have a plastic-based idea, but it will be more informed about the safety aspects of the sport than is the current norm. Do a search and read the threads about how stupid, laughable and totally wrong Hollywood portrayals of climbing are and then have a think about the fact that this is the education that access and insurance decision-makers receive. Demystifying our "sport" for the masses may well bring some big advantages for us in terms of access. It will also lead to Government funding of the sport, and flow-on effects for the respect we have as a community when it comes to town planning and so on. Don't believe me? You should have seen the panic that went through the Canoe and Kayak community here in Australia recently when there was talk of no more Olympic funding for Australian teams... and it wasn't just about the money... if you are an Olympic sport it talks big when applying for all types of planning considerations, trust me. Olympic inclusion is easy to criticise from a certain standpoint, and I know all too well about snouts in troughs at this level, but the benefits are pretty good too. Cheers Adam

No, everyone was once a newb or newbie - only the unteachably ignorant go on to become n00bs. Regarding the Olympics, I guess no one remembers that it was supposed to be a demonstration sport in the Barcelona games (1992). IIRC, it missed by 4 votes.
