I'm going. Really excited. I remember climbing at hounds ears a couple years ago (I wasn't avidly climbing at the time) and I thought even then that the place rocked. I can't wait to see it again now that I actually know a good bit about the boone area bouldering in general. Super pumped, good showing or not, Organic, it ought to be a great learning experience (my first comp as well).

I know southwest allows bouldering pads to be checked.. i think they all do. ..some might try to charge you.. but you can get around that..

Well I'll be there to. I was training hard till my gym closed and then tweaked a tendon. I don't care though. I'm just stoaked to head there. M

So yea, I had an absolute blast, even if I didn't get anything. 1 damn problem that I worked on for about an hour(and should have sent 3 times, but kept blowing the topout) kept me from getting second, which was a bit of a bummer, but it was still a great weekend. I'm definitely looking forward to the other 2 comps, and will be back at Hound Ears for sure next year.

In reply to: so, because i'm fairly new to bouldering competitions, what exactly is sandbagging? ...it's usually indegineous to low lying river valleys where flooding is a problem. They fill burlap bags with sand during times of flood to hold the rising water back....

Mmmm...in general, sandbagging is climbing in a lower division than you really could just to win stuff. For instance, if I was able to climb V3's and 4's rather consistently, I have no place being in the Novice catagory(V0-V2). However, I have sent 1 V3 to date(and that was at Hound Ears after a lot of working it), and thus have no qualms about competing as a Novice, even though I'm pretty solid on most V2's. The same would hold true if you can send V6's and 7's...you shouldn't compete in Intermediate, which is for V3-V5 climbers.

In reply to: so, because i'm fairly new to bouldering competitions, what exactly is sandbagging? Here is a description from the Philly Rock Gym, and their solution to the problem:
In reply to: What is Sandbagging? Sandbagging a Difficulty Category is entering a category which is easier than your top ability. For example, if you have red-pointed a couple of V3s and you choose to enter the Men's Novice category, you would be considered to have "sandbagged" that category--you should probably be in Intermediate. At the Midnight Burn, we ask that competitors enter a Category which reflects their best abilities at that time. To help prevent sandbagging, the PRG has a scoring policy which allows us to move competitors up a Category in certain cases. Each Category has a Benchmark Score which represents the highest point value reasonable for that category. Any competitor who sends two or more problems worth more than the Benchmark for their Category will be automatically bumped up to the next Category. Basically, it is when someone enters a competition category that they know they can win in order to collect the prizes. It is more sporting and honorable to enter a category where you push yourself and your competitors.

Amazing comp. it was my first competition and the Triple Crown rocks! I am going to try and make the HP 40 one if school does not interfere. I had so much fun, the bouldering at Hound Ears is amazing and I even was able to ride the Jaws 3-D bus on the way back!!! YEA! hahaha. Triple crown rules!

I might be ready, but Im not sure. I'm psyched, though. There are going to be a TON of us from Florida, esp. Gainesville. I think we have a convoy of like 12 people. Watch out for Camp Florida, the Shenanigans will ensue. Lata. Mike

Clausti, In the past you had to pay for admission whether you were a competetor or a spectator. There are only a certain number of people allowed to participate. Check triplecrownbouldering.org for info I could be way off, this was 2 years ago.
