Word on the street is, Tim from Wall Crawler in Atlanta made some kid cry, and it turns out that kid's dad is super-rich, and as a big "fuck you" to tim he's opening up an amazing new gym to blow all the others in the area out of the water. Most of the gym owners I've met in the ATL are giant douchebags, so I say good riddance to them. My question for you is - anyone know the NAME of this new gym? I know I had seen a website for it at one point, but completely forgot what it was called and can't figure out the magic combination of google keywords to find it.

That sounds like urban legend material to me. The word I've heard is that the guy behind Stone Summit is someone who used to be associated with Atlanta Rocks and has broken out on his own. Don't know how accurate that is, but it sure sounds more plausible. JL

JL On the surface it looks more plausible, but the fact that this gym is going to be so absolutely massive gives some credence to the "rich guy" rumor. Honestly, what bank is going to provide the financial backing in this economy to build a gym large enough to host 30k sq ft of climbing surface? I'd certainly believe that some folks from Atlanta Rocks were involved, but the question of where the money comes from is a big one. What I'd like to know is, how much does the closing of the perimeter location of Atlanta Rocks have to do with this new gym?

Thats a pretty nice looking facility. If you look at the size of other facilities that house fitness clubs (around here we have AFF)
then its not that far fetched that a bank would back someone on a venture like the SSC Gym. That is assuming the owners have a solid business plan, proven management team, down pmnt. etc... I think what they are doing with the SSC Gym represents the next step in indoor climbing gym development. We are already seeing it in the larger and more expensive metropolitan areas like NYC, where the indoor climbing facilities are housed inside of larger fitness clubs and climbing access is just part of the package. It allows the owners to boost the membership rate and breaks free from a niche market. It also and maybe most importantly, allows the facility to be used during more hour of the day and night. Instead of being open from 12:00 - 9:00 p.m. they can open from 5:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. or even 24 hours a day if the location is right. Its actually a really smart move.

Hello Southeastern Climbers. I am one of the two owners for the new gym going up in Atlanta, Stone Summit. I'm very excited to see that people are talking about the gym, but I would like to clarify a couple of things. This gym has nothing to do with any kids and we aren't trying to damage the reputation or memership base of any of the Atlanta gyms. We are building this gym because we wanted to help grown the climbing community. It was also designed to host large compitions and help those that wanted to preform at a world class level, while also previding the platform for beginners to enter the climbing community. Now to address whether our gym is going to really happen or not. We are. We already own the land and the funding has been secured. The things that are holding us up are fabrication, since we are building ground up, and a resturant, whose lease didn't run out until today the 15th of Dec. We are on track to open next fall and I hope to see all of you there. If you would like to ask me questions directly, my email is dluke@ssclimbing.com Thank very much Daniel Luke Stone Summit

Hey all interested in Stone Summit. Just a heads up that in the next few weeks the Mexican Restuant on our property will be finally demoed. And if you have any kids... We just signed the contract to host the 2010 Youth Nationals. So make sure they're ready to work their endurance. Peace Out Daniel Luke

Jay Turns out the rumors were probably false (big shock there), but Tim from wall crawler has screwed several people I know by doing stuff like selling a pair of shoes that's dryrotted then refusing to replace them when they rip on the first use, so if *I* ever open a gym, I am definitely gonna call it "Up yours".

Not to bring this thread back from the dead but Stronghold Athletic Club (http://www.strongholdathletic.com/) in Columbia, SC has had a climbing wall, weights, cardio, and free classes (yoga, etc) for over 15 years. Ever since I left Columbia I've wondered why everyone else is so stupid about their business.

That looks beautiful! And besides just looking so nice, the terrain will certainly be a pleasure to set and climb on! Very nice work indeed. I must visit.

How's that all work? check the post dates- they should be open in time for the 2010 nationals- especially if the walls are going up now. Movement in Boulder opened something like 90 days after wall construction started. my big question about this gym is where the hell is all the top roping and lower angle climbing- the website and that video all show steep lead climbing- which is all fine and dandy, but if nobody can climb it, it wont do any good.
