It's true that we will be open in time for Nationals this July. And to address the steepness of the wall; from a percentage stand point the walls definitely look as though there isn't going to be anything for the beginner climber; however, if you were to compare the amount of flat surfaces to the local competition, we would still have more. Plus, an area of wall that has yet to make it to the video which is upstairs is all flat wall as well. I certainly want to help grow the sport by developing our communities' beginners but I also want to be the training grounds that will raise the bar for climbing in the world. Another note that may interest you is that the whole 60 foot section has top ropes established at the half way mark so that it will not only be for the crazies, and also the entire roof can be traversed on the side so that you can access the barrel without having to climb the roof. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. Daniel Luke

What is your plan for setting up top ropes half way up the 60 foot walls?

I can understand how my explanation of the half-way tope ropes could be confusing since there aren't any other gyms in the area doing this system. But, it is a commonly used practice in other parts of the world and works very well. How it works: One of the 60' sections will have two climb options: a 30' top rope and a 60' lead climb. Therefore, those who are not lead certified can still experience the steep overhang on the 30' top rope. The reason we had to stop the anchors at 30' is because these walls are so steep; if you fall you will crash into the other side of the building. However, there is another 60' section that is not as steep, and you can top rope or lead the entire route. If you are lead certified, then you can choose to climb right past the top rope anchors for an arm pump you will never forget.

Daniel Luke having more than the competition doesnt mean much if 80% of your customers can only climb 20-30% of your walls. i would also suspect that, as the biggest gym in the country (well, for awhile at least), that your revenue requirements are substantially more than the competitions.... although, i would hope that you've done your homework in regards to the demographic you're catering to, and of course at this point, its more or less pointless to argue what the walls are going to look like!

I understand your concerns, but this is a project that I have been researching for the past four years. And I promise that there will be more than enough terrain for everyone.

This is great to see a new gym coming into Atlanta. I'm glad to see that somebody is listening to the climbers here. Bring on the pump. It will be great to train on walls higher than 30ft.

Curious why this gym is saying they are the nations largest climbing gym. Is it simply ignorance of other bigger gyms such as Carabiners in MA, or Mesa Rim in CA; or is it dishonest marketing?

Hey all, Just letting you know that Stone Summit has been up and running for the past 3 months and it has been a blast. I hope that if you are in the Atlanta area you come check us out. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey, I'm new here. I am a very infrequent climber that is looking to get into it. I've been to Stone Summit 3 times in the past 2 months (got rid of my health club membership and decided to spend the money on something I only have to pay for when I use it). Stone Summit is a pretty nice facility. It can get very crowded in there, but you can usually find space on a wall somewhere (even if it is one of the bouldering areas). Right now is a pretty good time to visit because interest is pretty high. I have honestly been surprised that there are so many people into climbing around Atlanta. I am not sure what the competing climbing areas are charging nowadays, but a single day of climbing including harness, shoes, and belay device rental is cheaper than what I paid the last time I went climbing 10 years ago. I would surmise that the cost is meant to help encourage repeat business (and it my case, it is working). If any of you want any video or photos of the facility (besides that they already have on their website), then let me know. I have a fancy DSLR camera and one of those ContourHD helmet cams. Just promise not to laugh at my horrible climbing technique (at ~10 days of climbing to my name, I am still very much a beginner).

i'd appreciate some pics or videos. I'm from atlanta but I dint really get into climbing until i moved away but I'll be back in town at the end of the month and I'm planning to stop by stone summit for a day or two to check it out and do some climbing so it would be nice to see some extra pics to see what all they have. I'm really interested in the size of the bouldering areas and if theres a good variety of problems. Also, it the pro shop very big? I'd like to try on some new shoes while im there as well. |
