I really enjoy climbing indoors.I have tried bouldering outdoors and found it very, very different.Of course this is not a bad thing by any means.I heard climbing is WAY better then being indoors.I believe it even though right now I prefer the gym. Can't wait to go outdoors this year though!!!

it is not pointless but it is more fun to pursue other types of climbing because they are better but it is a great way to start Trob

I have to say, starting of in the gym is one of the best ways to start climbing. But after a while, it's good to take the climbing outside, and try your hand at real rock instead of plastic holds. But that's just my 2 cents.

I guess someone would be dumb if they had no legitimate reason for only climbing indoors. The gym does have it's upside though. You can meet climbing partners, climb at night after work (for those of you with jobs), and there are all kinds of beautiful, graceful girls to appreciate. As far as climbing indoors being like riding a stationary bike I disagree. It's more like the difference between skating in the street or skating in an indoor skate park. They require the same level of skill. If you're climbing inside you still have to make the move. I'd personally rather be at Joshua Tree but climbing indoors is my only option a lot of times.

I respect your opinion smoker dude but I still don't think it's dumb.I say if you want to only climb indoors "go right ahead"...if you want to only climb outdoors "go right ahead".Being outdoors is great I know but still if you want to be indoors all the time then hows that dumb?!

Personally I'm all for people climbing exclusively indoors. It keeps the outdoor population down thus more enjoyable.

climbing inside is great for the off season, training and meeting new people, but being outside is what it is all about.

Wow. I'm surprised how many people think indoor climbing just sucks, and how it can only be used for training. Real rock is great, and so is plastic, they all have their advantages. Have you seen some of the positions and moves that gym rats make up? True you probably might never see those done on the real rock. The fact that they can do those moves alone shows how much more power they have and that they will never be surprised by any move on the real rock. Also don't forget about those holds that do try to get the real feel of the rock. Or even those holds that have very little texture and are slopey as they get. The power to just stick those is amazing. Give us gym rats a break, and come in and join us for a little game of add-on. Not all gyms are stinky and grimy with sweat. Climb hard, no matter where you are, just have some fun

cuux_clipper you got it spot on, im 15 and havnt yet climbed outside, im going tomorrow. But the reason i started at the gym was to eventually climb outside and experience the outdoor life eg. the satisfaction of doing a climb, socialising, sleeping outside with no tent (i know all of what i just said was complete cheeeeeeeeese)

Ive been climbing for about 3 months now, and all i know is the gym. I really can't see why everyone hates it so much. Ive met a bunch of people, including possible future out door rock climbing partners, as well as beautiful nice-ass'd girls. Sure i wanto climb outdoors sometime, but i don't see how climbing outdoors could be THAT much better than indoors. Plus, i dont' really have the green to spend on outdoor climbing. From what i hear, it seems to be pretty heavy on the wallet. [ This Message was edited by: torvum on 2002-06-20 23:15 ] [ This Message was edited by: torvum on 2002-06-20 23:16 ]

There are people who don't like to climb outside. I know at least one from my gym. e's climbed outside, but said he didn't like it. I can sort of understand that (sort of). Some people claim that they like to climb outdoors, because it's a popular mentality amongst climbers. Many hint that you are somehow wrong if you enjoy climbing indoors only, so some people climb outdoors to fit in, but always look like they're having a really bad time.

In regards to the first post in this thread; I think that it is dumb and pointless to pursue any one type of anything! Especially in climbing do you need to experience its many great advantages and aspects. It is a wondrous as well as wonderful sport, enjoy it as much as you can!

I think gyms are great for newbies who don't have enough climbing pals to hit the local crag, especially since that's the situ i'm in right now. You can bet as soon as I know enought people I'll live my summers at Red River Gorge, but till then and in the winter, its great. (not to mention a good way to blow off steam after classes since the gyms are just off campus around here)

I agree fully with kriso9tails. The fact that climbing is changing is not accepted by a whole mess of climbers. Lots of climbers are afraid of being viewed as "new school". I don't see whats so wrong with that. Gyms are great for so many reasons, mostly the variety of routes. Its the only place you can go to time after time after time without gettin bored of the routes there. Lets not forget that you can make some really sick moves indoors without having to worry about getting dinged up. Indoors our out, I give any climber the respect they deserve(unless he/she is a major jackpine)

Indoor is more convenient, plus it's fun to make up your own routes. That is why i climbed plastic consistently during the school year. How else can you have a 3 hour bouldering session after class or work ends?

Living in the city the gym's so handy - I'm there in 15 minutes. Plus I'm still new to climbing so pretty much everything in there's a challenge!

I think that we should stop viewing indoor and rock climbing as the same sport. They are simular but very different. When one got into ROCK climbing they did exactly that. Climbed rock. Now there is a new bred of climber that learns on plastic and progresses to rock. There is also a new sport called indoor climbing. Not to be confused with ROCK climbing. They are different. Yes, you can apply what you learned from one to the other but they are different sports. It is like ice hockey and roller hockey. Simular but different. Just because one climbs indoor, does not mean that they should at some point make the cross over to rock. If they do, GREAT. If they don't,GREAT. Climb what you want and forget all the rest of this sh*t. Climb hard, climb safe.
