How can you be satesfied with indoor when the outdoor kids get to play with all the coolest toys? Not many excuses to whip out that mother of all cams in the gym, now are there?

quite. The toys outdoor are better. the girls, weather, walk-in, landings, socializing, distance to the bar, and route beta are better in the (my) gym. It's not just for newbies, everybody can use a good eveningsworkout on hard problems within walking distance from work.

And of course, you are all americans, and so forget that in many other countries, such as denmark, we don't have ANY rock. At all.

So we max out the gyms, and that probably means they're more fun than the stale old-cheese-and-farts gyms you're complainig about...

I started my climbing career indoors at my local college. Some of my new college buddies dragged me in there to try it with them. Of the 4 of us that started, only two of us still climb, the other two stopped the first month.

Near the end of the first year I'd been climbing indoors, the college climbing group had a 'road-trip' planned to the states, but I declined to go cause I was scared (and i didn't like camping & wasn't into the whole drinking thing).

The next year, I started climbing outdoors and then soon after, went on the next roadtrip with the club and loved it. I was hooked on real rock. One thing i had really noticed is that outdoors, rock has texture and there are holds everywhere. Not just defined plastic rocks bolted to plywood. Also, being as its outdoors, it is less likely that you will smell stale farts, or Juicy Farts, unless your the belayer and the climber has explosive diarhea and is not wearing pants. *hahaha*

It's also much more of a head game, outdoors when your top roping or leading. There are real dangers, such as hornets and bees... not to mention spiders and snakes.

blah.
