I think an East Coast gathering would be awesome! And being in Va, I think WVA would be great. I would Love to make it to Utah, However I, Like many others i am sure, cannot afford to take enough time off work to head out west. ( I know I am the companys B*tch, But if the bank says yes to this bank thing, Im gonna have a FEW more bills to pay (hope hope hope)) Name a date and im all over it. Im sure I can round up a few others for it as well.....

ANyone else?

Hey Folks: WVa is not that hot in August. Nights are cool, air clean and the rock is everywhere. There's also Nelson's Rock Preserve near Seneca. Lots of great camping in the Monohgahela Nat. Forest, even better Mnt. biking and some of the best white water kayaking in the East. Do I sound like a tourist salesman for the place. Well I love it there. If someone decides to organize it I'll help with WVa info...camping, directions, cabins and other misc. things. Let me know. Later, Charlie

Spring break for me is last week in March. But I am also unemployed right now, and only have class on Tuesday and Wednesday, so I could probably make it most anytime, as long as I remain jobless!!

I would be glad to pick up anyone between Little Rock and WVA that needs a ride, too!

Thirteen weeks of being paid to play...ain't life grand?!?!!? (On week 14, the ESD starts asking you for actual PROOF of your job contacts!)

My spring break is the last week of march, but i might be going to Utah, but i am not sure. But that sounds sooo fun and i definitely would like to during the summer. Does You know if your area is near a river (to kayak)

Hey all: So U-Stu you 're the owner. I heard somebody bought it. I use to hike there before the trails (did you build them). I know a bunch of the MD Trail club members from the '70's. They use to climb all over that rock. I'm interested in the trip but Ionly top rope. If y'all lead I'll follow. FWIW W.Va. can still be cold/snowy in March. Hell I've skied there in April, nearer Canaan Valley. It's higher than Seneca. I think April-May would have better weather. I'm agreeable to March if that suits everyone. Bring your long johns tho'. Hey : stardust - there's also Seneca Creek that runs into the North Fork of the S. Branch of the Potomac. This is a class III river, 6 miles of continuous WW. The North Fork that Stu mentioned has different sections. The best WW would be Hopeville canyon , downstream (N) of Seneca Rocks, cl. III. A lot of the N. Fork is cl. I-II. What level of WW do you paddle?
U.Stu- I don't remember any trails there in the 70's. We just bushwacked between the crags. When did you buy the rock? If no one else comes down, I'll still come and climb with you. I can climb fairly well but am clueless on leading/pro/trad. If you want to do top rope or teach me some trad then we can make it work. Charlie

Ok folks Here's the current tally:

West Virginia seems to be in the lead and since U-Stu has a place, cabins and the crag here. I think it's a no brainer but still open for suggestions

Zlippper- early March, end of March, 2nd week of April
Mountainrat- no date
Ironmask- any date (easy I like that)
Uncle Stu- no real job, any date (another easy one)
climbchick-any date but June
Greyghost-Near Seneca but no date
rrradam-late April
Karen-late April
arrockgirl- unemployed any Date but late March is break (from what you don't have a job)
stardust44-late march but may go to Utah but may not , but may?????? a little whishy washy stardust;-)
Me- I'm flexible but I do have a job. guess i'm bringing the beer!
Keep sending your best times for a trip. As of now I would say it's between March and April. If anyone else wants to keep tally feel free to take it away. Charlie

OK now you've done it. I was thinking of heading to WV as I read the forum but when the 'B' word got a mention.... hey it's not that I'm an alcofrolic, they go to meetings, I'm just a beer lover.
April or May is fine with me but the weekend of EDIT: SEE BELOW>
I didn't get down to Seneca at all last year so there or Nelson sounds good.
I feel your pain Uncle-Stu, finding partners. I'll be sure to send you an E next time I'm down.
I will also be in the Red at Easter if anyone else will be.

My order of preference because of shifts: EDITED BECAUSE OF SHIFT CHANGE
#1 -weekend of April 27-28
#2 -weekend of April 6-7
#3 -weekend of April 20-21

If we decide later, like May then I'll let you know more.

Looking forward to checking out Nelson Rock.

Hey all: I prefer the weeks after Easter 3-31. Daylight savings time starts on 4-7 so the weekend after would give us the most light. As of now any weekend in April is fine. Zlipper--you can only make early March? I thought you could make April as well. W.VA. is only 3-4 hours from Baltimore/Columbia, Isn't your school somewhere around there? It's an easy wknd shuttle. It would be a shame if you couldn't make it since you were the original poster of the idea. The weekend before Easter would be ok for me as well. I think March 23-24. It would be good if Stu drop a line about these dates. For the record: Are we talking Trad or top roping? Later Charlie

Actually the weekend following would be better but I voted in favour because I can make it work. I may have to leave late afternoon but lets get a date set. I hope this weekend is good for Uncle-Stu. Likewise I hope if rrradam & i-karen are still around the east coast, that they will manage it.

hey all : I think DArkside has a problem with the 13-14th. Zlipper problem with the 20-21. Stardust seems agreeable to all, I,m good with all dates (as of now), climbchick likes late April, arrockgirl is open, Adam and Karen are still in the East. Stu still waiting to hear. Mountainrat likes middle 2 weeks. If Mountainrat can do the last weekend of April I think that might appeal to the largest group. OR the first week of April. If I missed anyone then let us know. Last weekend of April would work best for me but 1st & 3rd are OK.
I work to midnight Friday 12th and back at work 5.30am on the 15th. With the 8hr+ drive I could only make the 13/14th if someone else from Canada could drive/share driving. Not too promising eh! If you're from Ontario, PM me.
Driving down with no sleep I could do, but not make it back as well (alive).
Which just goes to show that climbers rarely die climbing but on the drive home

Hey Conkdg I work in Beltsville, live Balto. so maybe we can hook up for the ride. I can drive as well. I think stardust needs a ride also. I'll send you an email with more info as the time approaches. Do you climb at EArth Treks? Maybe we can hook up before the trip to climb. Or Carder/Great Falls. Charlie

Good Idea.

Now let's lock this down. Sounds like the vast majority of people want to do Seneca Rocks. This is a very, very good choice!! Let's do May, because the Gendarme (the local climbing shop that has a nice porch) and Seneca Shadows (local camping - very nice campground, with hot showers and sand boxes for your tent) will be open. Also, the weather is a bit more consistent during this time. I recommend we hook up May 17-19.

For those of you who have never been to Seneca. . . the place is real (that's why I like it). It is a traditional climbing zone. It does have bolted routes, but the easiest ones are very hard 5.11s, on homemade hangers and very, very run out.

Erm...RJ...I think discussion was which week in April with Uncle-Stu offering his place to camp, and the crag he OWNS, Nelson Rock to climb at. Mountainrat has been taking PM's as to which week in April people are voting for.
I do agree we should nail this down soon though and yes Seneca is an awesome piece of rock.

Hey folks: I email U-stu and he says any weekend is cool with him. Gotta love flexibility. He did say that he would appreciate a little trail maintenance from those attending.
Darkside: Coming from Ontario-impressive!!
I also think we should stick with April since we have the most input with this month. Doesn't mean we can't do May as well. I'm going to email folks that had shown an earlier interest but haven't voted on an exact date. Later Charlie

I guess I should apologise for backing out but I just can't go Friday to Monday on one nights sleep.
Maybe if the weather craps out on the 13/14th, the 27/28th could be an alternate.
Stu, would you be interested in showing me around Nelson and doing some climbing on the last weekend in April? Maybe Adam and Karen can make it out, it would be great to hook up with anyone who wanted to do a repeat weekend as someone already suggested.

I am not trying to be a bad guy or anything but how many places in the US do you have to pay directly to climb outside. Part of seneca is on private property and no one asks for money. If the climbing is worth it the trails will get developed. I know a lot of people who will not go to NRP because of the 5 bucks. I am not saying that it is a ton of money. I think it just comes across the wrong way to a lot of people.

I am not mad Stu. I never said I was mad or even implied that I was mad. I was just hoping for an answer from you. Instead all I got was 5th grade sarcasm from people trying to defend you thinking it was being witty. There seems to be a severe lack of respect on RC for other peoples postings. Another quick question why no dogs?

GG... Just think for a second at the amount of $$$ Stu shelled out to purchase the 140 acres of land that makes up the NRP.

OK... Now that you've thought of it, I'm assuming you did, do you think he should also pay for the developement of NRP, cabins, trails, personel, on top off the land he had to buy.

If you do, then let me pay the $5 for you. I donated $250 to keep this site running, only to have some users, you included, throw rotten vegetables at me. I have no problem paying to climb on Private land. I also donate to the Access Fund.

Wow, I just thought of something...
You get to ride on the backs of those who donate, RC.com & Access Fund, and reep the benifits of those donations. Good for you, you got a free ride.

Don't feel too bad about having to pay to climb. As a climber I want to climb, and I want to do it for free. As someone heavily involved with access matters, I can only appreciate how much better it is to deal with a landowner who favours climbing. NRP is not only a crag that favours climbing but is actually owned by a climber. How sweet, and rare, is that?
As a preserve the guiding principles place climbing as a secondary priority and in terms of access this has to be accepted. The two are not however, mutually exclusive so with good management climbing can have a place. It often takes much effort and financial expenditure to make these things work so this is where user fees raise their ugly head. Think of them as a neccessary evil, pay them, and then forget about them and enjoy the climbing, because access is open.

Greyghost et al.. I understand that you are bummed at paying for something that once was free. I been in this situation numerous times. Camping on National forest land that now cost money, state parks charging day use fee for mnt. biking, etc... BUT what is worse is losing an area altogether. Take a look at Blackwater Canyon in W.Va. and see what other private owners are doing. You can't camp at some of the coolest overlooks, hike, bike and enjoy areas that were recently open to all!! Condos are being built as I write. Seneca also charges. We pay the rangers salary, trail maintenance, bathrooms cleaning etc., with taxes but you don't see it leave your pockets. What is great with NRP is that you may actually have a say in it's improvement. We should as climbers embrace this situation and help improve the area. With US 66 on it's way to W.Va., private property will get developed and to have an area developed for climbing can ONLY be good. Later Charlie
PS Thanks Stu

We appreciate the time you spent with us, the route beta you showed us, the experience & expertise you so willingly shared with us as we shelled you with rookie questions, and most importantly the crag you you run so smoothly on your own blood, sweat and tears.

i have a few interested as well, but haven't seen anything posted here. i contacted stu (aka oozinpustule) & he is more than happy to have people come out. we just need to organize! the cabins need to ne reserved in advance, & i'm not sure where the nearest campsite would be.

i'm still trying to get a head count from my group. argh! they are starting to think about postponing a week & going to seneca then.

I'm a little confused zlipper. I thought you posted you were organizing this weekend, didn't you go? How about another try in two weekends, can you make the last weekend in April or is anyone else interested in meeting up for the 27/28th? I am thinking of heading south that weekend and it would be cool to meet up with some RC.com'ers. I was thinking of either NRP or Seneca. Any takers?

Pat: last weekend was supposed to be the weekend. I wondered how it went, not so good it would appear.
Charley: it's not that I want to drive so far, I just want to make it down there again. I was at the New last year but I haven't been to Seneca since the year before. I had heard of NRP but with no beta, I have never been. With RC.com, comes beta If I make it down there soon and your ankle is good, I'd be happy to climb with you.
Stu: I hope we can meet when I get down there. If I see PTPP I'll try to keep the secret but if he asks, I cannot lie
All: If anyone is interested, I will post when I make it down, either the last weekend of the month or early May. I'm not so much trying to make an RC trip as hoping to meet some of you when I do make it.

I will most likely be at NRP Saturday and Seneca Sunday with a couple of other RC'ers but may need a partner so if anyone is in the area and would like to meet then post or PM. If you see someone with red hair and a funny accent then shout up and put a face to your username.
Is anyone else going to be around?
