Why does it cost 5 dollars to climb at NRP?

I guess I should apologise for backing out but I just can't go Friday to Monday on one nights sleep. Maybe if the weather craps out on the 13/14th, the 27/28th could be an alternate. Stu, would you be interested in showing me around Nelson and doing some climbing on the last weekend in April? Maybe Adam and Karen can make it out, it would be great to hook up with anyone who wanted to do a repeat weekend as someone already suggested.

I am not trying to be a bad guy or anything but how many places in the US do you have to pay directly to climb outside. Part of seneca is on private property and no one asks for money. If the climbing is worth it the trails will get developed. I know a lot of people who will not go to NRP because of the 5 bucks. I am not saying that it is a ton of money. I think it just comes across the wrong way to a lot of people.

I am not mad Stu. I never said I was mad or even implied that I was mad. I was just hoping for an answer from you. Instead all I got was 5th grade sarcasm from people trying to defend you thinking it was being witty. There seems to be a severe lack of respect on RC for other peoples postings. Another quick question why no dogs?

GG... Just think for a second at the amount of $$$ Stu shelled out to purchase the 140 acres of land that makes up the NRP. OK... Now that you've thought of it, I'm assuming you did, do you think he should also pay for the developement of NRP, cabins, trails, personel, on top off the land he had to buy. If you do, then let me pay the $5 for you. I donated $250 to keep this site running, only to have some users, you included, throw rotten vegetables at me. I have no problem paying to climb on Private land. I also donate to the Access Fund. Wow, I just thought of something... You get to ride on the backs of those who donate, RC.com & Access Fund, and reep the benifits of those donations. Good for you, you got a free ride. rrrADAM

Don't feel too bad about having to pay to climb. As a climber I want to climb, and I want to do it for free. As someone heavily involved with access matters, I can only appreciate how much better it is to deal with a landowner who favours climbing. NRP is not only a crag that favours climbing but is actually owned by a climber. How sweet, and rare, is that? As a preserve the guiding principles place climbing as a secondary priority and in terms of access this has to be accepted. The two are not however, mutually exclusive so with good management climbing can have a place. It often takes much effort and financial expenditure to make these things work so this is where user fees raise their ugly head. Think of them as a neccessary evil, pay them, and then forget about them and enjoy the climbing, because access is open.

Greyghost et al.. I understand that you are bummed at paying for something that once was free. I been in this situation numerous times. Camping on National forest land that now cost money, state parks charging day use fee for mnt. biking, etc... BUT what is worse is losing an area altogether. Take a look at Blackwater Canyon in W.Va. and see what other private owners are doing. You can't camp at some of the coolest overlooks, hike, bike and enjoy areas that were recently open to all!! Condos are being built as I write. Seneca also charges. We pay the rangers salary, trail maintenance, bathrooms cleaning etc., with taxes but you don't see it leave your pockets. What is great with NRP is that you may actually have a say in it's improvement. We should as climbers embrace this situation and help improve the area. With US 66 on it's way to W.Va., private property will get developed and to have an area developed for climbing can ONLY be good. Later Charlie PS Thanks Stu

My "droogs" and I (hahaha) just had a fantastic time at Nelson this weekend. Thanks again Stu for showing me and my cohorts some cool TR's ("NA_IOU", or Brian, is still amazed at having cleaned that overhang- I'm still amazed he did it, too!) We appreciate the time you spent with us, the route beta you showed us, the experience & expertise you so willingly shared with us as we shelled you with rookie questions, and most importantly the crag you you run so smoothly on your own blood, sweat and tears.
