Hello. I don't know anything about rock climbing, but my climber-brother has asked for a "set of quickdraws" for Christmas. Can anyone recommend a brand? How many does a climber need? Where is the best place to purchase, either online or in a store (I live in San Francisco)? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

i would say the best brand is petzl, they make really nice quickdraws, but pricey. black diamond has a few sets out, omega pacific sells a set that goes for about sixty bones for six and thats on the less spendy side.

a set typically has six draws in it
a single draw goes just under 15 bucks(climbing gear is safty gear so its not cheap)
every climber needs a differant amount, 12 is good start

rei.com ems.com i dont do much online shopping
rei and ems are also good stores that should carry draws

You can get a good deal here. He'll probably need more than 5, but a set like this will get him started.

climbaxe.com has some great deals on draws. the veri-lite is an excellent choice if they have them in stock

Try not to get the cheaper sets out there. They're generally have cheaper biners and most climbers will upgrade from these cheaper draws when they can.

There are many popular biner/draw combination out there. What people use is personal choice. Many people tout the Petzl draws, but I don't see many at the crags, maybe because of the price. The BD Posiwire is also very good and more affordable. This is a combination of a Black Diamond Positron and Hotwire biners for a draw.

A good number of draws is between 8 and 14. I would just buy as many as you can afford.

Grab a Black Diamond pack. That's my choice. whatever you decide to get, if you go to EMS.com by Dec. 9th you can get 25% off your purchase

Here's an image of a Quickdraw. I believe it is the Hotwire and Positron caribiners that Granit Girl mentioned.
Here's link for gearexpress, they sell climbing gear. I have found them to have good prices and service.

petzl are the best for sport climbing. they are nicer to pull on if you are just dogging the route. and the biners are butter smooth.
there are many good companies like Black diamond and DMM, they all work the same and are the same strength. 12 draws are good but they cost about $20 each.

They've got my vote. I love mine. The Hotwires clip like butter, fit the hand well, and the draw just handles well over all. Not a fan of the Petzl draws, but that's just personal preference. Personally I like a wire gate for my rope and a straight gate for my bolt side. The straight gate makes me feel a little more secure and the wire gate is very clippable.

blackdiamond has a fantastic cheap draw called "FREEWIRE" they should run you 10-13$ each

and i find 12 is a good starting number for north america but i've been finding routes in europe need many more (16-20) so depending on where you live

Some advice for a non-climber:
=> Get ones that match. It makes it easier to recognize what you own when you get gear mixed with others'.
=> You can buy pre-assembled quickdraws or you can buy the pieces separately and put them together yourself. I'd recommend simply buying the pre-assembled kind.
=> It's better to get fewer of the "deluxe" models than more cheap ones, IMO. Deluxe models include: Petzl Spirits (sport climbing), DMM Heliums (trad climbing), IMO.
=> You can see lots of different kinds at REI in SF. But I think the best deals are on the internet, especially if you can use a 25%-off-everything coupon.
=> Chalk is a good stocking stuffer.

I would go with the ten dollar draws of of climbaxe.com or madrockclimbing.com becuase they are just as light as all the other ones but much cheaper.

Well lots of opinions here. Those BD Firewires that someone mentioned above look good at $13. I like my Metolius' draws from REI.
But ask your brother what he wants or doesn't want. Key lock, Wire gate, Petzl, BD, Metolius, OP. More cheaper or few expensive.
Happy hunting.

Those being the two least important criteria for quickdraws.

Other than a keylock nose and the length of the sling, what else matters.

Open-gate strength, more than anything, but stability and ease of clipping, as well.

Wiregates are the easiest to clip so the climbaxe ones would be just as easy to clip as any other.

rei has some dmm spectre quickdraws on sale, not sure if they have many of the 12cm left but they have the 18cm-

on sale they're still more expensive than some of the other quickdraws but i feel as though dmm makes a very high quality product-

good luck!

Gee whiz, I guess if I was really really strong like you and could redpoint .12s I would get super picky and annoying about gear all of a sudden...
Oh wait, I can and I didn't.
