Apparently, if you cut the stem of a lotus' leaf off below the waterline, water will flood down into it, drowning and killing the root. I didn't know that.

I was growing weed outside and inside hydroponically at the same time. The hydroponic weed when dried had less volume than the same amount of leaves from outside. I found continually having to raise the lights a hassle, but the high school kids that stole my outside weed made growing outside more of a hassle.

Is that the Castoroides nebrascensis pollinating the flower? (Your state was a major hemp supplier during the World Wars, as I understand)

hafilax wrote: We've been unsuccessful with basil for the last few summers. I think it's a tough one that requires the right growing conditions (which we haven't figured out). If you killed a spider plant OTOH... Huh, I've always just plunked basil in the ground and let it grow. I always thought it was one of those stupid easy plants to grow. Grew it from seed last year too, doing the same this year.

I've killed three basils thus far, though one was a cutting and the other one of those bunches with roots from the supermarket. I'm still mourning the loss of my Thai Basil. Murderers! My basil is doing really well. Oregano is out of fricking control, I'll have to bring one of the plants to Jay next time I get to his place.

And here's the garden so far in Ohio. Still havent gotten really hot weather, but the freezes are over, so it should be good.
A few varieties of heirloom omatoes, peppers, big sage, small sage, bi leaf basil, African basil, oregano, thyme, mint, tarragon, rosemary, dill, spinach, and some volunteer gourds from the housewarming gifts that See Eye brought us last year.
