Wales is class.

Pembroke I know is very popular, if you coastal climbing, you will like Wales.

That's likely just where you ate. Not where I ate it it doesn't! It's pretty good actually, in one of the bars by London bridge area, near Guys hospital. London is hugely multicultural so tends to have the cultural food cooked by the relevant culture, which explains why in London at least, it's pretty good.

I miss those nacho meals, they were delish! Tongue

The food in Scotland sucks. I lived there 4 yrs, I know Wink

if not check out the yha (might be worth joining if you arnt already a member.) they do let non members stay, but it costs a bit more.

I'd recommend Yha too. I'd also recommend joining a local mountaineering clubs/groups. The one I was with was great, in Reading. Regular climbs each week at Amersham, Swindon, London, Wilts, and at Craggy, and Westway gyms. That plus regular weekends away to Wales, Lake district, Peak district, Cornwall etc for outdoor climbing plus scrambling and hiking, organized with their own cabins in different areas we'd stay in, which were class, very impressive, yet cheap, and cheap to and from there as we'd all carpool too.

There's a mountaineering club in Reading?
Part of the university?

Weird, I lived there 20+ years and never knew.

Yes and a good one too. They own cabins in the Lake District etc. Check them out:

That one isn't part of the University, but there are 3 clubs in Reading, or certainly there were 3 when I was there 2 yrs ago; and one of them was with the University.

Lol@oi!
I used to say that to people I recognised but didn't know their name..

Who you calling Oi?? Tongue

Try our www.ukclimbing.com

Other than that, no idea, but you'll get all the help you need there most likely, otherwise as sungam says, find the guide book for the area you intend to climb. Google might work.

I thought your site was some kind of joke, but it's real, never heard of that one before.

Anyway, here's what google brought up:

https://www.stanfords.co.uk/...oor/climbing-guides/

and as I was saying re. ukclimbing.com:

http://www.ukclimbing.com/gear/review.php?id=83

Why don't you just google where you want to go??

You will definately get info from:

http://www.ukclimbing.com

And also try these:

http://www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/rockclimbing

http://www.smartboysonline.co.uk/

http://www.northumberlandbouldering.co.uk/

Scroll down on the one above, to venues.

or just click here:

http://www.northumberlandbouldering.co.uk/venue9.html

Just a pic here:

http://www.visit-rothbury.co.uk/.../rock_climbing_1.htm

Lake District and Peak district are popular areas too, you might want to try and go there if you can.

When you going anyway?
I'm heading back next week for a month visiting family, and friends who all climb too.

lakes and northumbria are in the north of englandshire, the peak has it's own guidebook, as does the Nescliffe area. These are the only areas I really know of in england.

And he mainly referred to wanting to climb in the North.

Gritstone = Peaks.

well i'm planning to do some climbing with the locals along the way. this will be my first time ever in england so i want to explore as far as i can get. i'm trying to save enough for two months, but even a month will do. i plan to go as far north as newcastle, and definetly london. that's why i'm trying to get a handle on the costs ( lodging, train, food, etc.). planning for the summer of 2010, next summer i'll be learning to surf with my brother, but i'll be climbing a lot joshua tree.

Oh wow! 2010 that's a way off, you may want to check in again with regard to the costs, things are changing all the time especially there right now, Woolworths is gone apparently, that's a chain store, and prices are always increasing, so what goes for now may not be so for 2010.
Central London only has gyms for climbing, but good ones, and Westway is more likely than not the best one. You would need to travel out by 30 mins at least to get anything outdoor climbing related.

Either way, youth hostel is a good way, and camping. That will be your best and cheapest option, you can join the YHA here, nearer to when you go:

http://www.yha.org.uk/

See the links at the top of the site. I know they are really good in Scotland as I went to a good many. The one in Inverness is an old and massive Castle and that one was fantastic. I hear the ones in England can be more like hotels, so maybe not so good as far as outdoor life and lodging goes, but still cheaper than a B&B or a hotel. 2nd option especially if friends there can't put you up is a B&B.
The ukclimbing.com website though is another useful site to go to, if you need to know where accomodations exist in the climbing areas you intend to go to.

Also, you won't have a problem finding climbing partners on http://www.ukclimbing.com You can put out a request in the morning and have about 5 offers ready to climb with you by the evening, unlike over here Wink

Sungam is a good one to ask about the Peaks seeing as he's climbed there, my friends do but I haven't, and I hear it's good though your hands tend to get shredded due to it being gritstone.

One more tip, always try to purchase your train ticket in advance, you can get them very cheap that way, also via this site, where you can collect it at the station via the ticketing machines, after pre-ordering it online:

I don't recommend the National express coach, though cheap you will be a long time getting to where you are going, cramped with other people, usually a full coach, and stopping at every City on the way, sometimes having to transfer and wait 1-2 hrs before the next one, avoid at all costs.

http://www.nationalexpress.com/

http://www.thetrainline.com/...ID=9674_200812484412

And be very vigilant in London! Pick pocketers are rife and experts at it, especially central London, and Edgeware road, Oxford Street and Liverpool street areas.
I was a victim of it on becoming complacent after being out of London for a little while then returning to work there again, but so was my Mum more recently, last week, though she too was very lucky as they rang the bank etc to stop halt her card use straight away.
Also London becomes quite dangerous after midnight, be aware and in the same areas as above. I nursed 2 x guys my age who were knocked unconscious by Eastern European, and Asian gangs, who whacked them over the back of a head with a baseball bat, one of those victims is now permanently brain damaged and disabled and I was angry while I nursed him, as that was pure evil. Both instances occurred after midnight in central London. They never caught the culprits. Also, a 3rd I came across in the same hospital when I worked a short time in Neuro ICU, who was not just hit with a baseball bat, but also axed. Pretty disgusting what goes on in this world.

Mega bus and city link. Look them up. Buy them at least 4 days in advance for a 40% discount. Edinburgh to London returns can be found for as little as 15 quid.

A quid is our slang for 1 pound.

1 quid = 1 pound.

The difference between the Jocks, I mean Scots Wink
is they say Wee, and we say small.

The difference between the Canucks and us is they say Super Small and we say very small.
