Horse Pens 40
About Horse Pens 40:
Where else can friction grab up endless slabs, crimp out solid roofs, slap for that devious sloper, and finish the day with a cold one at the restaurant just yards from the boulders? Horse Pens 40 was reopened by the Schultz family in 2002, after years of restricted access. Click here for an open letter from the new owners to climbers. They are ready to take your 3 bucks and let you boulder till your tips bleed. This is easily the BEST boulderfield in the Southeast, with acres and acres of high quality boulders packed right next to each other. It is only a short drive from the interstate. There is a campground right next to the boulders. The boulders here are bullet-hard sandstone, shaped into unusual formations by wind and especially water (the infamous WATERGROOVE). Horse Pens 40 is the premier bouldering destination for the deep South. Camping beta: the camping costs $8/night/person but that does include your climbing fee. You get some nice amenities including showers, flush toilets, and even electrical hookups. Plus you'll be camping only 30 feet from the boulders.
DOGS ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED in HP40. Please respect the landowners and leave the pup at home.
