First off, I have to agree on all the wasted space everywhere and the lack of toolbar on the left. Also, the color scheme IS softer on the eyes, but seriously, it looks like sh!t, literally!!!! I would have been the first to support a change in logo cause I thought the last one was horrible looking, but a freakin' monkey??? what did this site get bought up by savetoriallensmonkey dot fvcking com?????? This is ridiculous!!!

Also, from the fact that the management did not do any sort of polling or beta testing on the new look of the site I can only conclude that they lack some extremely basic comprehension of how to redesign aesthetic-wise a site. And then this:

In reply to:
management is at the Rendezvous today, so i would suspect that they are out climbing-- maybe we can expect something tonight or tomorrow....

implies to me that they don't understand the first and most important rule of coding/software work:

YOU DO NOT MAKE A CHANGE AND TAKE OFF FOR THE WEEKEND, WITHOUT MAKING SURE EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY FIRST!!!!!

BTW, I love how the logo on the left says "Access Fukd" due to the image rescaling, which obviously wasn't double checked by anyone. Really describes where things are headed if this kind of management spreads in the industry!!!

maybe if you desaturated it a bit like this, id like it just that much more... i agree, as a designer i dont think this design really clicks...

MY OPINIONS:

The Monkey- While I don't think he's a bad lookin' monkey, I have no idea what he's doing as the logo for a rockclimbing website. Not really sure what someone was thinking on that one.

The Colors- I don't mind the colors. I sure don't prefer them, but I could get used to 'em. They are quite poopy. That said, it looked way better with the old colors.

The Layout- The space at the top, as well as ads replacing the ever-so-useful navigation bar on the left really bug me. Without the bar on the left, the site is much more difficult to navigate. The layout makes to site look unprofessional, cluttered, and, well, downright bad. It just looks bad.

Basically, I hate to say it, but the change sucks. Bad. I realize someone worked hard on it, but it's just not good. If this layout has to stay, at least give us an option to change between the two. I'm sure my bitching doesn't help any and because I'm not a partner I really don't have to room to complain, but whatever.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that this is just the ultimate troll or that it's an early April Fools gag.

A minor technical note: When your cursor is over the gear, routes, articles, users, about, and help links in the top navigation bar, the text is black and there is a border. When your cursor is over the forums and photos links, the text is the tan background color and there's no border.

I wasn't involved with this redesign but I support it. I have to laugh though. I have such mixed feelings right now. I am in no way a graphic designer, but the old design was my creation back in late 1999 almost 5 years ago. It's nice to know some people still felt it usable today. I have to take blame for the brown though. I always felt the black and white was so lacking in creativity (my own of course). So my suggestion was for a more earthy tone. However I do think knol's suggestion to desaturate it a bit is a good one. As for usability concerns, you now understand why I never changed it from the B/W layout while I ran RC.com.

As for the monkey, that was partially my (bad?) idea too. I had suggested we go with some sort of animal as a mascot. Today was the first time I saw the new logo and honestly I was a little shocked. But after laughing a few minutes, I think it just might work. It's actually quite brandable. When MySQL came out with their dolphin mascot I couldn't believe it. But hey I'd rather be a cool, mean looking and slightly possessed monkey than a dolphin, elephant (PostreSQL), water buffalo (GNU), extinct lizard (Mozilla), bird (Firefox), pengiun (Mandrake Linux). What DO pengiuns actually have to do with Linux??

My only request now is for a new sticker for my car. :)

It will be interesting what happens in a few more days as people start to use it. One day we'll be looking at Wayback view the site circa 1994 and laughing at how "cheesy" it looked.

RC.com 1.0 on WayBack
RC.com 2.0 on WayBack (notice the poll if people liked it)

One last note, if you want to see a bad logo, here was RC.com's second logo. The monkey is logo number 5.

A GrassRoots Effort: It is impossible for one person or even a single group to add ALL the information about climbing. Therefore, Rockclimbing.com is a community effort. Each climber gives back to the climbing community by contributing what they know about climbing in their own area. This concept has enabled Rockclimbing.com grow to become one of the largest climbing resources on the Internet--all without a corporate sponsor!!

My last post on this as well! Did you actually have a web developer do this or somone who said that they would wihout knowing what they could do?

The site structure is hideous now. Who ever developed this site, I assume you are on this site my god! How many years exp do you actually have! This is the biggest amature piece of s--- I have seen in the past 10 years on a site with soo many users.

If it was your first attempt which I kind of assume it is from the structure and look of the site, take a look at the comments and suggestions. This is about as bad as you can get for a revamp of the site.

The site was about 2 years out of date, as far as code etc. Who ever wrote the new s--- and messed it all up structure wise basically took rc.com back 4 years ( no not 2 years as you were but 4)

So, as you're siting here (not as a supporting partner) complaining about the site - I don't see you volunteering to help fix any of the supposed issues you have with the site.

In reply to:
I challege you then to go back 2 years and find it!

Rockclimbing.com, January 18th, 2002

Personally, I prefer January 9th, 1998

In reply to:
I assume most of the poeple here are posting about the look. I could care less about it. The functionality of the site in what I'm posting about which most people either don't care or don't know! Take some time and look about I've already said part on it, I'm done! It's pretty ridiculas.

I believe you said you were done about 4 pages ago... Now shut up already.

The moral of the story: If you're not willing to DO something instead of b----, then shut the hell up.

I believe this is called "user feedback," and is not something a business normally wants to stifle. A business also usually does not ask or expect its customers to assist it without remuneration.

I spent my share of time on this site doing code and admin stuff - none of which y'all ever saw (my specialty is all the behind-the-scenes stuff that you never see).

And I've been a supporting partner (person who actually donates money to keeping the site running) for I don't remember how long.

So no, it's not an idle threat - put your money (or your time) where your mouth is.

Once again! Ask Tim about the equip I've offered to the site. I've offered my help time and time again asking for a pm to help. None have ever been answered.

The responces hace been pretty similiar to yours. I will still offer! but the same responce has been given every time.

Maybe they're consciences are starting to bother them about accepting free help to develop a commercial site.

The banner ads are kinda fucked in the new layout, on my (kinda old build of) mozilla. The banner overlaps all the button thingies at the top.

mozilla -version says: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i386; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021016, build 2002101612

Here's a pic:
http://i3.photobucket.com/...barquux/dc53e7d4.jpg

Maybe I should post this somewhere where it won't get lost in the clutter or something... Of course, it could be a bug in the older mozilla (does anyone using firefox see this snafu?).

Or just maybe they dont want to give someone full editing access to the code repository without reviewing their resume and feeling out the candidate, as with any job. I'd say you've already made quite a first impression, PK..

Giving someone full editing access? I'd be willing to bet that only a select few 2 or 3? have that kind of access. To help with things around here people probably devel their own code etc on a locally hosted site on their comp. Uploading bits and pieces for the senior editors to look over for malicious content etc. I'm pretty sure it's well accounted for.

Exactly. That logo will mainly appeal to children, and the last thing this site needs is an even younger user base.

cliffhanger9,
well, i don't know where to find it now with the new layout so i guess i can't quote it for proof. but, on the old sidebar their was a link to where you could contribute to the sight, by signing up to be a area manger or a mod, etc. well one of the options was a coder, and it stated, that their is/was a fake version of the site online for coders to test and develop code. so people didn't need to have full access to the real site to be a coder.

I'll hold my vote for a while to give it (new loook) a sporting chance, but first impressions (unfortunately) usually prevail. My first impression of the recent change is not too positive: wasted space, less user friendly navigation, too bland, looks/feels 'cheap', and it's difficult to tell that this is THE RC.com.

Thankfully, my first impression of RC.com came before this "look".
