Yeah I kinda thought it might be a little bit early in the game yet. Gotta say that Timmy O'Neil rocked that part of the rendezvous last year. My favorite part of the whole weekend.

I might be there. I'm acting as media coordinator/liaison/contact/whatever and Wendy is coordinating volunteers again. If anybody wants to pitch in email her at rendezvousvolunteer@yahoo.com. Dave, very glad to hear you and Steph are coming this year! Folks I want to give everybody a heads up. It looks as though there will be a larger police presence at this year's Rendezvous. Some things to keep in mind to stay out of trouble: 1. If you're drinking, please please please do not drive. 2. Carpool! Use designated drivers! 3. Or just bring what you need for the night and stay at the Rendezvous! 4. All dogs have to be leashed. 5. Parking is always scarce at the NRR, so again, carpool, arrive early, plan on staying the night or at least staying until you're done for the evening. Once you leave each night, it will be very difficult to find another parking space. 6. We ran out of beer at around 11PM last year. Hopefully, that won't happen again, but if you want to be prepared, be aware that glass containers are not allowed on Park property. PBR cans? No problemo. 7. Lastly, remember that what you do reflects on all of us. Let's not give them a reason to think even more police are necessary!

Oh, also... there was some indication that this year's NRR might not be free due to Park regulations regarding fundraising on NPS property. That DID NOT materialize and as of right now, the NRR is still 100% free to all participants. (We do, however, encourage donations at every opportunity. All funds support NRAC activities on behalf of New River Gorge/Meadow River/Summersville Climbers. You could be buying the bolt that saves your ass.)

Good to see some fellow Pennsyltucky folks coming this year. By the way I'm still down for the idea of writing usernames on foreheads this year so we know everyone. lol. OK, so I've only been to one climbing fest (ClimbFest at Foster's Falls), but I showed up with out a partner, and it was totally cool. I met some nice peeps from Nashville that let me climb with them. My partners down here in ATL are flakes, and i cant rely on them to commit. It will just be me and my girlfriend. Will it be a problem to find people to belay and climb with? Is the environment laid back? thx Z

Truello-- Awesome man. Didn't know you were one of that crew. I'll definitely be there as long as you guys let me know ahead of time. It's probably my favorite "home" crag. When are you heading to the New? I'll be there for the whole week prior to the Rendezvous so if you're planning on being there for more than the festivities let me know. If you haven't been climbing there before I suggest extending your stay.

I haven't actually met Jae yet but he and I are both beta whores so we've been collaborating some of our knowledge for some sort of database of topos and coords, etc for PA. I'd love to go down a little earlier (have only driven over the bridge, haven't actually climbed there) but it depends on schedules of people i'm going with. Would be sweet to extend the trip though.

truello-- yeah, the new is kinda like disney world, you can't really experience the whole place in a week, much less during the rendezvous. so hopefully you'll be able to grab some extra days. i like where you're heading witht the pa database idea. i'm not really doing the same thing per say, but i am looking to develop and document a fairly unpopular area near my home. wish ypou guys were a little close cuz i'd love some help. but this doesnt fit into this thread so we'll leave that for another day

First of all, the NRG is a ga-zillion times larger just in terms of climbing, and this event alone draws upwards of 800 people into the gorge for a big ole partay. It'll be a totally different gig, I promise. And on the topic, I am pretty sure that some of us ex-NRG folks (turned RRG and TN and out-west-road-trippin folks) will be there! Can't wait to see J_ung and the dancers! Oh... and Roger... oh how we miss you Roger!

Alrighty people... gotta keep this thread goin, so we can get some more publicity. So as to not waste a post, I must say this: I am planning on attending a clinic this time around since I had to leave early last year. The Rendezvous website says there is a possibility of having a "Building Better Trad Anchors" clinic and "Big Wall Basics" clinic, and one of those would be my first choice, so does anyone know how much of a possibility there is of whether or not these will ever come to fruition? Additionally, the other option that already is set to occur is the "Crack Climbing Technique" clinic. Anyone know anything about this one because I like crack climbing and wouldn't mind making that one of my stronger skill sets. Thanks folks, see y'all soon. Peace. Colby.

That would be cool.....better TARD anchors... :) I'm actually doing a Photography clinic Sat during the bouldering comp. Its not on the schedule yet, but I'll be talking about Degree of Focus, Composition, Aperture, Angle etc etc...anyone interested? Its geared toward beginner's to intermediate. We'll be using the Bouldering Comp peeps as our un-godly test subjects. -Danno

Unfortunately my camera is junk and I won't be upgrading before the event, otherwise I would sign up for your photog clinic. I would prolly be better photographer than I am a climber anyway. Maybe someday.

I'm thinking about doing a clinic this year as well... not sure which one yet. Also considering competing just for shits & giggles. So few people compete that maybe I have a chance of not getting last place! I did unintentionally lead a route much harder than I thought it was going to be yesterday... ( I need to learn how to read a guidebook ) ... moving on up!

The shirts are totally the best part of the whole event. I mean, everything is rad...but the shirts are that gift that just keeps giving. This year, we're getting AAAAA LLOOOOOOOT more shirts, so we certainly won't have a shortage this year

Well, I just went to sign up for volunteering. Hopefully I get a cool job like oiling up ladies before a climbing photo shoot, but I guess I would be happy just putting tents up.

Hello kasharp, I'd like to head to the New as many weekends as possible before the summer. I live in Sterling and thought maybe we could exchange info and carpool. Also, I will probably spend a good few weeks living at Rodgers this summer. I spent 2 months 2 summes ago there w/ a few friends and had a blast. I was planning on heading to Boone this weekend with a big group of friends but the weather looks like shit (as usual) If the weather turns out to be rain like they're predicting I might head to the New for the weekend (leave Fri pm and return Sun pm). Even if it rains, I can squeak some climbing in under one of the ampitheatres. Let me know if you're interested in going this weekend and we exchange info. Munky

Oh, I'll be handing off the camera; I'll likely be the one holding the ladder and or spotting the "camera" as well as the photographer.

I've been tiptoeing around the idea of purchasing my first dslr. I just haven't been able to justify the $800+ for it. Maybe I can now just so I can shoot at NRR.

I've been eyeing up the XTi. But as of now, I really don't know much about them, other than I was looking for an entry level model and the XTi was getting good reviews.

You know, we had so many last year, that we had volunteers managing voluteers. Why do you think its the best rendezvous anywhere? Its not the local crew (all 20 of us), its YOU (and the sponsors of course.)

Of all the people responding in this thread....more then half are from PA. I understand our state is in desparate need of escaping, but where are the Ohio people coming to the NRR? Any Maryland or Virginia people coming?? There are some pretty quiet states out there.

I wish I was there in previous years so I would know a little more. I'm still a NRR virgin. I was just looking at clinics, and would it be possible trad or anchoring clinics? If I score a camera, I might be jumping aboard for your clinic.

a hot chicks room and a bucket of truth would be great additions Episode one Season one: http://www.answers.com/...ght-citizens-brigade In actuality, I thought things were great last year. I loved the clinics, and I would love to have more of them. That is dependent on the volunteers though. I will let you know if I think of any more. Glad to see that some of the quiet states are checking this thread. I know there will be plenty in attendence. It will be good to see everyone again.

A while back someone suggested that we write our user names on our foreheads to let each other know about the RC.com users. I am all for the attention getting methods, but how about just on the cups? Dan, is it possible to make a box of sharpies available at some table? I suggest a box because pens have an uncanny ability to lose themselves at big events, and hopefully the whole box won't get lost over 3 days. So, then everyone can grab a beer and write their name on their beer. I would probably use microbarn anyways. Lots of people have my name. Dan

I would like to go to this event, but I won't be able to swing the whole weekend. I'm hoping to get my hubby to come with his camera and we can leave the kids in Kinder Camp while we wander around and watch the activities. Where would be the best place to park for this? And what would be the best activities to watch on Saturday? God Bless, mik

Maybe the women folk will get equal recognition too. Personally, I won't be able to redpoint anything over 5.2. So, where do you guys think I should go to watch some of these hard men send some comp winning climbs? Sunday morning 4 AM at the main tent -late night people would still be up -early risers could meet prior to getting on the rock -we would be the first in line for morning activities -the main tent would be open (because wtf is anyone up at 4 AM for?) ok, in seriousness: I would probably attend, but I remember the weekend being pretty packed. I don't know how you would fit it in. Late friday in competition to the slideshow would probably be good, but then we would miss part of the slideshow.

Oh shit! I almost forgot. Crash pad sumo wrestling MIGHT undergo a major expansion this year. If it does, said expansion MIGHT include a climbing-celebrity death match. Seriously. Anybody wanna see Katie Brown lay Mal Daly down for the count? (Love you, Mal! Wendy says hey and we can't wait to see you back in West By-God.)

what's a "climbing ranch"? ... will - even if you don't get first place (again) this year, i bet you'll score enough cash to pay rent for two months like last year you guys need to stop advertising the comps so much, i want to win something and i'm not going to win advanced bouldering with all my awesome v0- sends if you guys keep telling everyone!

kasharp wrote: what's a "climbing ranch"? ... will - even if you don't get first place (again) this year, i bet you'll score enough cash to pay rent for two months like last year That would be fine by me, although mucho training would be required. But, I'd be even more psyched if the prizes draw in a ton of people - there were some strong damn trad climbers in the gorge last year, but most of them didn't compete. A full on battle royal of the best the NRR can attract would be sweet! Although it would also probably mean I'd get my ass beat. And ditto on the 'climbers ranch'. Will PS Katie, what're you up to these days? I'll be at the New this weekend if you're looking to climb.

In the past years, we've had such a dismal turnout for all the women's competitions, its difficult to justify a said (freaking awesome) prize for the women.

I'm sure we'll all be floating around bumping into each other at random anyhoo. I like the idea of a meeting place and time. I met a shitload of RC.com people last year, but still missed a bunch, too. I'll suggest Saturday night during the party, maybe someplace around one of the bars? That way we can be partying together and plotting for Sunday climbing.

I'm hoping to be up there a few times between now and then, although it sounds like ya'll have things under control. If there's anything I can help with before the shindig, lemme know. Mark

I just realized that I already have a 4 day weekend that weekend off from work....sweet! Still too far off to say if I can go or not, but I'd like to. I'm having my eyes zapped the month before, and that might be the biggest problem (I have to see how the healing goes). So, seeing as I'm far too lazy to go through the rest of the thread....anyone know if any Canadians will be making it down? It'd be sweet not to have to drive all by my self.

The closest city to the New is Fayetteville, right? Mapquest is giving me 7.5 hours to get there, which really isn't bad..... If I have to go by myself how easy will it be to find partners down there? Edited to add that I still don't know where I'll be at with physically being able to lead/belay a leader. I'm still waiting to go out and see how much pull I can handle on my harness before it hurts to damn much.

We don't climb to hard, but if you're in the shape to climb I never mind belaying for a while. Hell even if you can't climb or belay at all, just come down. Myself and plenty of others likely won't mind having company on the trail or having someone with a camera hangin around. You'll be fine whichever way it goes down. Peace. Colby.

I do not know where you're coming from but I assume its near Niagara if its only 7.5 hours. Buffalo crew or you could maybe find people around Pittsburgh because you'd be driving past it. Still a 3.5 hour drive but will save you the last 4. I'm really wishing it was mid-May right now, the anticipation is killer. But that means i'd lose over a month and a half of climbing :).

Here's an idea to bounce off you guys: We're thinking about holding an auction: "Your Photo Here"...bid to book a session with a photographer. Pretty much, the winner will get a pre-determined amount of photosets (and belayer). They will be given a cd of the prints (free release of copyright). What do you think? Any ideas/suggestions? (like prints? that type of thing?) What would interest YOU in this type of auction? Thanks! -Dan

I would probably bid on that auction. I think a cd of the photos would be fine. If the winner wanted to get prints, they could send the pictures to Ritz or something like that.

as far as what would get ppl to bid on it, obviously the more famous the photog, the more you'll prolly get for it, but i think you'll get bids for it anyway, if somebody promises to rig, photog from above and provide a belay slave. have a portfolio of pics from whoever the photog is going to be. you taking the pictures?

sounds like a pretty cool idea. I agree, that the photographer should have some sample photos. and granite_grrl, I'll be there for the weekend wanting to climb also. Right now, I'm flying solo too, but I'm sure it won't take much to get a partner.

I did this last year for the RRGCC, and it worked out well (big thanks to the unibonger!). Fun times for a good cause. CD with release to print is a good idea, and maybe add in a couple of prints, depending on what the bidding reaches. Bummed I am not going to make it this year, but I will be in yellowstone then.

I'm going to escape from my current nook in mad-crazy-sillicon-freaking-valley and be coming down for the best party this side of carnavaal -my 4th rendezvous. got my tix booked. miss the nrg like crazy, esp with all the great temps y'all enjoyed in early winter. it'll be sweet to see j_ung, dbrayack, noell and all. AND, since I gave up on my pad at the new after moving out here, I'm not sure where I'll be crashing this time (hint, hint . 'Course burnwood's always fun too. And, I hope this climbing ranch thing doesn't put poor ol roger out of biz. I never cared for his campsites too much, but roger's a kind soul..

And, I hope this climbing ranch thing doesn't put poor ol roger out of biz. I never cared for his campsites too much, but roger's a kind soul.. Kush, it'll be great to see you! I think we're down to camping space only, but you're certainly welcome. Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure where WE'LL be come Rendezvous weekend. It's starting to look more and more like we won't be in our place by then. I highly doubt a climbers' ranch will affect Roger all that much. Might be a whole different clientele. And don't forget, Roger has just about the best location in the entire area. Chestnut Creek should probably be more worried.

Here's all you need to know: IT'S AWESOME... honestly, it depends on your attitude. If you're coming out thinking you're gonna climb all of the classic moderate climbs in one day without seeing another person, you're mistaken. However, if you come out thinking you're gonna have the time of your life with a couple hundred of your best friends, get on some amazing stone and make memories that will last forever, then you should definitely show up. THIS IS THE PREMIER EVENT OF IT'S KIND.

We've developed another event: As discussed earlier in this forum, we are going to have a "Photographer Auction" Pretty much, we'll be holding a silent auction for the photography services of Harrison Shull. You can choose WHATEVER route you want to do. Not only will you have belayer (probably me), but you'll have Harrison take a photoset of you. A webpage of "selects" will be provided from which you can choose to have Harrison print you a 16x24. In case of Rain, then the $$ will be refunded unless you will be around Monday which we will then hold the session. Any thoughts/anyone interested? -Dan

You guys already have an awesome event and you just keep improving it. The photo auction seems like a great idea. We actually found the police were really cool last year. We ordered a pizza and hung out with the guys while waiting at the gate for it. They were pretty awesome. I was too drunk to remember the stories they were telling us, but they were good guys. Having more of them isn't so bad.

I'll def be saving some cash for that bid. Now I have to decide what route! Zygomatic? Supercrack? Entertainer? Rapscallions Blues? Any ideas? What route would be sweet for photos (trad, of course)?

All right, I'm in! :) I'll be looking for climbing partners for the weekend - I lead up to about 5.10b sport, 5.8 trad... I'm thinking of entering the sport comp...how does the comp work - do they give you a list of climbs? Is it honor system? Is it all weekend or just one day? -Nicole

The comp is Sat; Its your top 10 routes, and yes, its based on the honors system. Also, there will be a list of routes worth "double" points...say you do XX 5.10a, worth 400 points, well its a double pointer, so you get 800 points, etc. -Dan

Things are starting to shape up for the Rendezvous. We had a meeting last night to dicuss various aspects, though we focused on two things of importance: 1. Volunteers, especially parking. We are in dire need of volunteers for the rendezvous. Being a volunteer constitutes a four hour committment helping us out. Volunteers get shirts, more exclusive "beverage" access, first dibs on food, and parking...that sort of thing....pretty much, you'll be a cool person in our book! (And you can know that you helped make this event kickin!) Since parking is a "tough" job, we will consider 2 hours of "parking duty" to fullfill the 4 hour volunteer committment. If you'd like to volunteer, please check out the Rendezvous website, specifically here: http://newriverrendezvous.com/volunteers.html I will discuss #2 in a seperate post.

#2. We need to be extra careful. Though it has never been a problem, we want to make sure that THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO DRINKING AND DRIVING. The police will be patrolling heavily and will be setting up sobriety check points. In the past, beverages have run out early, so please plan ahead; If you think you'll need extra refreshing liquids, please purchase these before hand. Once you start partying, PLEASE STAY AT BURNWOOD. You'll be fine there, we just care about you and don't want you to drink and drive. Thanks, I'd like to ask that people help self police this...if you want to keep the even as is, then this is quite important. Thanks, -Dan

Eighteen days and counting!!!! Hey all, an email blast went out to NRAC members with some pretty key beta for this year's 'Vous. Just in case you didn't get it...
In reply to: New River Alliance of Climbers (NRAC) presents the 5th annual New River Rendezvous, May 18-20!! We hope you are planning to return. No registration required. Same great program with the addition of some great bells and whistles… Check out our new website for details: www.newriverrendezvous.com 1. Rain or Shine!! We will be running the entire program no matter what! Bring your outerwear and forget about weather.com—we’ll have fun no matter what! 2. Carpool!! Parking continues to be an issue. 3. Behave responsibly—the National Park Service has informed us there will be more law enforcement (in and out of uniform) so be forewarned!! We highly recommend that you don’t leave Burnwood once the party has started. The cops will be lurking and the venue gates will likely close making it impossible to get back in! 4. La Sportiva is awarding a one year sponsorship contract to the highest scorer in the expert trad division. Start training, competition will be fierce. 5. Black Diamond will be awarding premiums in the climbing comp! 6. We will be recycling!! And going low-waste!! Hooray for our Keep it Green sponsor Osprey Packs. 7. Bring a Dessert!! Help make Dessertapalooza even more decadent. 8. Podclimber will be doing a podcast! 9. Kidzone! Kids five and up can join the fun. Thanks to Darn Tough Socks. 10. Athletes: Katie Brown, Micah Dash, Brittany Griffith, Nate Gold, Matt Bosley, Charlotte Jouett, Josh Wharton and more! 11. American Alpine Club is coming! A Climbers Ranch will be built here at the New! The legendary Jim Donini will be here to tell us about it. Watch for details about Celebrity Deathmatch ’07… 12. New River Gorge Photo Extravaganza! The silent auction will feature images of the gorge by noted photographers. Be prepared to bid! 13. Compete!! It continues to be the best deal going! It’s fun! Remember the Top Rope Division. Compete and You Will Eat! (Competitors are first in the dinner line!) 14. Clinics! We still have openings! Sign up on the Rendezvous website. 15. Donate! Please remember this is New River Alliance of Climbers' only fundraiser. Help generate the money that buys the hardware that makes this place safe to climb! Don’t forget to make your generous donation...especially since we can't sell raffle tickets this year. 16. Volunteer!!! Email rendezvousvolunteer@yahoo.com and Wendy will set you up. 17. Questions? Email maura@waterstoneoutdoors.com 18. Details about all of this can be found on www.newriverrendezvous.com!!

Hey, here's something of interest. The guys at Yourclimbing.com have really come through with the grassroots NRR promo. Two things: 1. Grassroots reporters. The site is looking for five people to cover the Rendezvous for it's NRR Grassroots Channel, here. All five people chosen get a free pair of Chacos for their work. They're not looking for professional writers and photogs, FYI, just folks with enthusiasm and, hopefully, digital cameras. 2. They've announced contests for best stories, photos and videos from the 'Vous. The prizes are pretty sweet; from Sportiva gift certificates and pro deals to a MH sleeping bag for best story. Thanks Yourclimbing.com!

So I finally went through the website, and now I really want to go! So a couple more questions: I havea 4 day weekend, can I stay at Burnwood over Sunday night, or am I going to have to move on. Another thing that I'm wondering, I have never been down to the New before, will it be disgustingly crowded with the Rendevous, will I get much climbing in? Guess I would really like to climb a fair bit if I'm driving that far. There are a few clinics that I am particuarly interested in, if I sign up on the waiting list what are the chances that I might still be able to get in (the RWW clinics in particular, which I have to asume has a huge waiting list!). And finally....anyone else headed down from Ontario?! I have one girl who's interested but hasn't confirmed. If I don't find anyone to head down there with in the next week or so I'll be posting up here looking for partners. I'm starting to get really excited! Hope to see lots of other RC.commers down there.

As far as climbing is concerned, it oughta be packed, however, I'm sure you can find lots and lots to climb; its the new, They don't call it "Endless Wall" for nothing! I'm not sure about the clinics....all you can do is hope and wait there in the am! Glad you're coming, I hope to see yah, -Dan

I'll be driving up early friday morning to help out and such. I'm planning on leaving on friday night and returning on saturday with a Jeep load of some more people. What are the chances I'll still be able to find parking? From what I was reading, on-site registration is OK for the climbing comp, right? Is there going to be an email to any of the people who asked to volunteer to say where and when? Or should I just show up at 9ish at burnwood? I know I'm rather excited. This is my first!!

I cannot say for sure..but I'm sure it'll work out OK...We have talked about giving out Parking Passes for those who show early, but I'm not sure if that is set in stone yet (though it seemed like a go from everyone) On-site registration for the comp is Totally expected. There's no limit to the # of peeps. I'm hoping there will be an email in regard to volunteering (and will inquire), but showing up and asking to help will likely be the best thing to do! (THANKS!) Me too...I'm nervous, its the first one where I'm on the other side of things! I'm going nuts!~ -Dan

Just to clear up the sportiva sponsorship prize.....It goes to the winner of the trad comp, male or female. There might be some "powerful yet elegant" competition from the ladies field!

Laf...nice try....the "double" pointer routes is going to remain secret until the morning of the comp for obvious reasons...but I will give you one hint...be sure to have "Poodle with a Mohawk" wired.... (If you not familiar with the area, thats a joke, its the only 5.1 in the gorge.) -Dan

Shoot, I don't know if I've made it to the 5.1 range yet. I can't seem to break the 4.10c range. haha. I'll just be entering as a beginner or whatever. I'll do sport up to 5.9 or TR up to 11. I mainly just wanna hang out with everyone and see what it's like. I'll be there the next two weekends to climb.

Its in the morning. I was thinking Tentatively at Hawks Nest, but we can make a call the morning of...if its just us, then we can go climb and take climbing photos... I'm thinking like sit around and talk about stuff for about 30-45 min, then go whereever and take lots of photos. It'll be very hands on, like OK, I would use this angle/lens to take this shot. I wouldn't bother with this shot, etc etc. What'd you think?

#1: I'll be looking for partners for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I've been to the New twice before, but I just tagged along and didn't pay much attention, so I don't know my way around. I lead sport up to about 10b and trad up to 8. If anyone's interested, drop me a line. #2: I'm coming from the Philly area, either Thursday night or Friday morning. Anyone interested in carpooling?

I'm in the same boat. Guess I'm not to worried about finding partners, and I hope to make the best of the clinics being offered, but it would be nice to find some people to car pool with. I will be leaving St. Catharines, On, driving through Buffalo (can go through any of the crossings there). Taking the I90 to Erie, Pennsylvania and then getting on the I79. Idealy some one from Ontario would meet me in St. Catharines, but I have no problem picking up people alond the way. I will be leaving Thursday afternoon, I'm hoping 2 or 3pm (to get down there at a reasonable time). And be leaving for home on Monday, again at 2 or 3pm. Would love some company and to be able to share gas!

Have any other volunteers heard anything? When should we expect to hear? It would be nice to know when my services will be needed so that I can make arrival and climbing plans around them. Thanks

I got a word document via email about a week ago containing current timeslots and names for the volunteers. I'd send it to you but I can't seem to find it, oops.

I'm sure that's where your name is then! If you volunteered for a specific slot and have not heard back, then assume that is where you are. I'm phoning around to get an electronic copy of the volunteer's schedule. stay tuned folks! Also, we'll have the schedule available at the event for you to check. -Dan

Question: how much spending money should I look at having on me? What goodies are going to tempt me and how expensive will they be (gear, clothes or food on sale? good deals?). FYI - I plan to bring some cash for my donation for enjoying the weekend, but other than the donations and my own food it sounds like everything else is free. I don't want to get caught with my pants down and no cash in my pocket if something comes along. Also, an all important question......should I pick up some generic beer at the duty free or are there some must-have brews when I get down there (or at least point me in the direction of a place with a decent beer selection, I'd rather just blow through the border).

Theoretically, you can bring 0 $$ to the event and walk away stuffed and happy. However, the purpose of the event is to raise $$ for rebolting and other issues in the gorge. We will NOT be selling anything. However, we will be auctioning off gear and photos; There will be ropes, draws, cloths, that sort of thing that you can bid on. (Silent auction, likely starting bid price = whole sale or close) We take plastic, check and cash, so if you don't want to bring cash but bring a credit card, bling bling. (though cash would be best for the donation bin...just think, about $2.75 = a brand spanking new bolt and hanger) The competitions, of course, cost $$ so if you want in on that, bring some dough (and some guns.) There will be LOTS of prizes for that. To be honest with you, I don't really drink much. Since in WV, the national past time is drinking cheap beer, you may be inclined to bring something "special" from Canada or from somewhere along the way. (and bring me some too OK?, just kidding) Hope that helps, -Dan

Okay, I didn't really know. Good to know about the payment options for the auction though, and like I said I wan't planning on taking in the whole thing without some sort of donation. Its just that we have a stash of american cash that I was going to dip into, I just wanted to get an idea of how much I should bring. And I'll see about bringing some nice Quebec beer that I have been enjoying lately (nice flavour...and pretty strong!). But beer is a lot cheaper in the states so I was planning on taking advantage of that.

I think there is nothing you need to buy other then lunches during the day. The rest is donations. There are the picture auctions, the raffles, donate $10 for patagonia shirts, minor amounts of gear is for sale, silent auctions, etc. So, if you are gullible for donating to good causes...you would need at least $1000 spending cash. If you are hard hearted, you should be more then good with $10. I think most people are going to be good with $50 alloted for splurge cash. Last year we brought a case of beer, but we didn't use it except when the lines to the kegs were huge. I would love to hear the beer joints myself though. I have never found anything better then the gas stations carrying bud, miller, coors, and pabst. Sometimes I like to spoil myself with a microbrew. ----------------------------------- second question triggered by your post.... I understand this is similar to asking what percentage you tip, but I am curious as to what you all believe. How much do you guys feel should be donated for a clinic? My thoughts have been to go look up how much the clinics normally cost the public, and then I would donate based off of that. As an example, I will use the numbers I remember from the Warrior's Way clinics. Expresso clinics seem to be about $70 Two day clinics $200 My guess is that a one day clinic is probably $120 What would you think a good donation for taking the clinic would be? I think something around $100 is reasonable (in this instance). The volunteer is giving up one day's pay to the NRR. So, the NRR should get the whole day's pay. However, I wouldn't take most of the clinics if they were full priced. So, I am giving a portion of the 100% cost. What do you guys think is an acceptable amount? How are you deciding what to give for a clinic that is not given outside of the NRR? (As an aside, I should note that I am going to donate in addition to the clinics. I just feel my attendance at a clinic validates ____ extra. I am trying to decide how much extra.) Thanks

Appalachian Ale is quite tasty and can be purchased at Pies and Pints, one of the must go places to chow on pizza and guzzle the suds. You can also buy 20oz bottles of Rogue to go there. Rogue's Hazlenut porter is always a yummy treat. You'll pay for it though. Other than that, beer selection in Fayetteville is pretty limited. You can all the regular stuff and even can get stuff like Newcastle, Sam Adams, and other more popular microbrews. But as far as local varieties, I don't know of a grocery store or gas station that sells a great selection.

Okay, wait.....how much food and how many meals should I plan for anyway? Food planning for trips like this always kills me, and it would be a big help if I didn't have to plan too many of my own meals. I'm also curious about the donations and what people are thinking about for the clinics. The only thing I have a basic idea of the cost is for the yoga clinics. I don't know what cost of these specialty clinics would normally be.

I'm planning on heading up thursday night so I can be there bright and early to help set up on friday. Is burnwood going to be populated yet, or is it just going to be me and my girl? Also, my girlfriend will be coming with me instead of on saturday morning. Think she'll be able to help out somewhere?

Cool. I think I might be in attendance to that then. I'm pretty pumped about this upcoming weekend. I was at Beer Wall this weekend, and I was amazed at how few people were around. Parking lot was full, but I only saw about 4 other people that were playing around on ?? Saint Pauly's Girl ?? the whole time. For the festival's sake, I hope there are a lot more people around.

I think the official free camping start is Friday night, but if you're helping with set up on Friday, I think we can find you some space. We do want to avoid anything that resembles a mad dash for good camping on Thursday, though. The NPS might not be so happy with that. Rebecca! Stop fretting about clinic costs. Your priorities should be: 1. Get here. 2. Have fun. 3. Donate/bid what you're comfortable with. If you show up with nothing, you're still our good buddy and we'll treat you right. As for beer, here's the thing: once you get back to Burnwood in the evenings, don't plan on leaving, because you might not be able to get back in. The police are going to clamp down on anything resembling drunk driving, so we're taking it a step further and discouraging driving, in general. If you leave when it's crowded, you might lose your parking spot, which will be in high demand. Bringing your own beer in is AOK (no glass bottles per NPS). Just make sure you get all you need before coming back into Burnwood.

Ah Jay, you see I have a very boring job which allows me to fret about the small details. I'm at home home now, one of those strong Quebec beer in me and feeling much more relaxed ;). I'm just stoked about the weather, the clinics and a chance to meet some pretty rad people when I'm out.

So other than a couple of RC.com users that I've PMed with and have arranged to meet I have no idea how I'm going to recognize others that I'd like to meet off this site. I wish I had some sort of defining characteristic, but I shouldn't even have to use my trekking poles around the campground any more (I will probobly still have them on the trails though, so keep an eye out for me!). There are also some more subtle scars you could watch for me, but (fortunally) they're not really obvious. Anyway, hope I meet a lot of you guys out there. It'll be nice to actually see some of you in the flesh!

I'm officially in. I have a babysitter for Thur - Sun. I'll be coming down late Thursday night. I don't have a partner for the event, so if you all need help Friday, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. I'm not sure where Burnwood is, but I'm sure it's easy enough to find. I've only camped down there one other time, and I can't remember the name of the place. Anyway, I'm pretty excited. I've missed all other years because of family events.

I'm leaving right after work myself. But, it only takes me 2 hours to get there. I really hope this rain doesn't make for some sloppy rock days. Maybe we will end up implementing some mud wrestling. haha

I'll be there with a couple buddies in tow. We'll be there EARLY friday morning, driving all night thursday. Sounds like it will be just in time to hop out and do some yoga. See you all there! P.S. What's this about no glass bottles? How the heck can anyone bring any decent alcohol to this gig then?

I'm debating to bring a keg just for that reason. Are we able to bring our own kegs?

Well, they said no glass bottles. So, according to that rule, I'm good. I'd rather not make anyone mad. I'd like to return for #6.

I'm bringing a bottle of red wine for myself. Maybe I'll pour it into a nalgene (hmmm... a sharp berry start, with a smooth plasticy finish. How lovely!) but whatever. What I want to know is, "Where is the single malt scotch?" I'm such a lightweight... I'll probably be the guy in a flamboyant, mismatched hat/shirt combo, no pants, dancing a jig by 10 o'clock, with regular showings each hour after that until they haul me away.

well, I'm not saying I can buy a whole keg or anything (I'm a cheap drunk). Not picky on the beer type if it's a keg. Alright, this is my last post before I see you all there. Do what you feel and keep both feet on teh wheel!

Hi! If you're still reading and not driving... IT. HAS. BEGUN. I estimate we had over 100 people camped at Burnwood Thursday night. The bloody thing hadn't even started yet! If you still have questions, just come on over and ask in person. We'll do our level best to fix you up! Ask for me personally at the NRAC tent and I'll see what I can do!

All I know, is that 7am came mighty early today. I did not want to come into work. I was down at fern buttress yesterday. I saw you and I think granite girl. The parking lot was full, but I only saw one other couple out climbing.

Did anyone happen to see one of those Mad Rock "welcome mats" that attach to the Mad Rock crash pad? You know, the thing you wipe your feet on, and that attaches to the pad with velcro? I gave my crash pad to my friend, who used it for the sumo match Saturday night at the Rendezvous. She put it down in one place, but when she went back, it was gone. Did anyone pick it up or something like that? I know this is a long shot, but if you have the welcome mat, please let me know and we'll work out how to get it back to me. Thanks. -Andrew

j_ung wrote: Hey, here's something of interest. (bold is my own) Not only will all the pictures, stories, and video from the NRR be in one place, but you can win swag.

I found it on the ground in the center gravel lot on I believe Friday around noon. The clear plastic cover seemed to have condensation on it so I figured it had been there for a while. Good luck!

Holy cow! Just got back in at 1am from driving back all of Sunday. What a great time! Speaking of losing stuff, somebody found my car keys and turned them in to the hospitality tent. I was certainly pleased. Ok, so total madness on Saturday night. The dancing, the ladies, the music, the gear. This was my first fest, and while I don't think I got to meet any rc.com people, I'm certain that I'm going to be attending many more of these things. I was the guy in the "Got Wang?" shirt. Can't wait to see pics/hear stories!

I was the guy parked at the end of row where all the vendors were. I had the silver, 4-door wrangler with the tarp coming off the end. I think the only people from RC.com that I ended up meeting were Dan and Granite Girl. (I wish I knew her real name.) Dyno comp was pretty sweet to watch. I wonder if any of the competitors found it more difficult with the camera flashes coming from above and right in their face.

acarp, I must've plodded past 100 times and never knew it was you. I didn't have a single (full) drink Saturday night and yet, somehow, I still woke up Sunday feeling like I just got off a three-day bender. During tear-down, I had to stop and sit down several times. Sssssooooo... tired. I'm in Charlotte now. BOO. Some of my Rendezvous highlights: 1. Hangin' with Malcolm Daly's son, Mason. 2. Hangin' with granite_grrrl. At one point I, dbrayack, microbarn, mdaly and granite_grrrl were all chillaxing at the Trango tent. Those are the moments I remember most. 3. Randomly running into an old friend from NC. 4. Making a respectable showing at Super Sumo, even though I was -- bar none -- the smallest guy out there. At one point I was tossed bodily into the retaining wall and some girl immediately poured beer into me and sent me back into the fray. I then, almost instantly, got hit from behind and went down hard. Still seeing triple. Thanks random girl, whoever you are. 5. I was at the NRAC tent hawking the last comp T-shirts when a guy and two women came around and started poking through the goods. The girl says (and I quote): "He's about my size. Want me to try it on? It's girls', but he'll never know the difference." At this point, I'm thinking ten or twelve year old boy. I ask, "How old is he?" The response: "Fifty-five." 6. The mosh pit.

Everyone likes to party but not to many people want to put the effort into making sure it goes off smoothly and/or don't appreciate all the hard work that local folks do *(like The crew at the waterstone, and the rest of you) That being said; if having a gathering in the fall is a serious idea then us "out of towners" should be thoughfull in planning and coordinating to ease the load from the people that do most of the work. Maybe a good place to start would be to have an RC.com meetup. BYOB! and camp at rogers or something.

yeah yeah! fall get together!!! let's do it! well I have to say that I am glad I get to put actual faces with names. i have to apologize to the guy who climbs 13's (sorry guy) I yelled at the back of his head and scared the crap out of him on Saturday night thinking it was someone else. I believe I was at the Mountain Hardwear tent....... and I never had the chance to get wasted because the beer line was long and the band wouldn't stop playing flippin awesome music! I think I danced for about 4 hours. Thanks Atomic Joe (I think) for playin some Dead!!!! I definately clotheslined myself Saturday night by the slackline (suggestion...for next year, make it higher or take it down when it's dark!!! Dag YO!) And thanks to 5.10 for a flippin brand new pair of climbing shoes from the comp, totally unexpected and awesome! Chaco for a belt, mountain hardware for a shirt, metolius for my fav chalk and the food was awesome and the coffee was pretty close to the best I have ever had!!!!!! I may have devoured my hand waiting in that line for dinner but luckily a kid checked the pockets of his pants while standing there and exclaimed, "that's where that went" - he pulled out a hack and we went to town! We were eating in no time! It was great to meet all of you - and the ones I didn't really get to spend time with I hope we cross paths in the future. What ever happened to Danno during the dyno comp? Sunday, not too bad - Coors kegs would have done me in for sure but I woke up to pancakes that had magically appeared (I did not share them with Jess) and I went back to sleep....packed up an hour later and now I'm counting down to next year. I'm definately heading out on Thursday, volunteering where I can and of course.....CLIMBING!!!

I'm way up for that and would even be happy to help with some planning. But do we really need to plan much? No money to raise. No comps, events, clinics or auctions. BYO food and beer. All we really need is a date and a place, eh? Roger would love the business, I'm sure. And it would be nice to support him. Plus, he has outhouses already.

I would lend a hand fo sho!! But I think j_ung is right that probably just a date and place is needed. I'd be down for BYOB. I'd also wouldn't mind getting a couple kegs and have people buy cups. A pot-luck dinner may not be a bad way to go. Or, depending on the amount of people, just order a bunch of pies from somewhere. I think I'm just looking for an excuse to party with more climbers.

The question now becomes: What do we call it? and when do we have it. I would still like to see some way to raise money for NRAC. (Pot luck dinner is a cool idea, what about a used gear swap too) Hows the weather around the second weekend in October?

Don't forget anyone involved in the Triple Crown will be doing the first leg to NC on Oct. 6th, I believe. Other than that, let's get planning! Fall Minivous?

Ahh yeah the triple crown, not sure, but i doubt i will be going to that this year. We may want to check about other local comps, and events that are happening in the fall. ABS series, boater fests, bridge day...etc Other Ideas for names: New River Sendfest New River Ruckus New River Rockfest (rock jam?.....) I'm reaching here NRAC Roc Trip (like Petzl Roc Trip) You know speaking of the Petzl roc trip. Thats a pretty cool idea to have designated routes and have a bunch of really good climbers trying to send them. Could do the same with the bouldering scene if theres enough interest. Just throwing out ideas here, bear with me.

Sure thing, no worries. It will come together-either way, I'll be down there all summer and fall. I do plan on doing 2 of the 3 for the Crown and taking a week long trip this winter to climb too.

IMO we shouldn't load this thing up with anything more organized than dates, times and the pot luck par-tay. I'd much rather just have a fun weekend of climbing and partying with a bunch of you guys under the most relaxed conditions possible. Make it a fundraiser and all of a sudden you have to open a dialog with NRAC and Roger. And NRAC, at least, has to put things to votes to make decisions. Let's keep it as light, spontaneous and agile as possible. Names... "RCNRG?" "RC.com NRG Minivous" a la stonefoxgirl?

J_ung, How do we put that on a T-shirt??? Ok, has the thread started or shall I do the honors? Let's just pick a weekend, a place to stay, possible field or established camp ground??? And agree that we will put our chef hats on and feed each other.

Folks I have an unofficial tally of funds raised at Rendezvous 5. Highly unofficially, NRAC grossed $14,500. Equally unofficially, we netted somewhere in the neighborhood of $10k. So, not only was it one the funnest Rendezvous...es of all time, it was also a pretty damned successful fundraiser. Typically, we donate 10% or so to the Access Fund. !00% of the rest of it will go to NRAC operations and equipment. From the bottom of NRAC's hearts, my heart and everybody who climbs here's hearts... THANK YOU! The next time you're climbing in the area and you clip a fat ass Petzl Long Life pat yourself on the back.

It was indeed a great event. Unfortunately, I was unable to take advantage of all it had to offer due to being so damn sick. In hindsight perhaps we should have stayed home since I ended up being admitted to the hospital shortly after returning. As of now, I’m still as sick as a dog without a diagnosis after 12 days. Despite our limited participation though, both Newbie and I really enjoyed ourselves and it was a pleasure to meet some of you in person finally- maldaly, dbrayack, granite_grrl, jamieg, acarp, tantrikclimber, camhead…. And also to see those again whom we met last time. It’s a pity we didn’t meet up with more of you, but there’s always next year. Great pics Dan! It was fun running around taking pics of boulderers and enjoying the sun on Saturday. Thanks for the tips. The boulder pad sumo wrestling comps were awesome and the weather just got more and more perfect as the days wore on. Thanks to Jay and Wendy who let us flatten their grass with our tent. It was great to see you guys again!

Is there a lost and found? I realized this morning that I didn't ahve my approch shoes any more. I think I left them in my ruch to pack up my tent before the clinics started on Sunday morning. I was camped away from the main party areas near the entrance to Burnwood. They're pink TNF approch shoes, probobly a size 9 womens.

Yeyeh! That's what I like to hear j_ung! NRAC worked really hard and prepped well for the larger crowd. I hope the new park supt. was won over. He seemed interested, positive and engaged with the climbers. And thank you for the beta on Cotton Top on Saturday. It was unbelievable to have the cliff to ourselves during such a busy weekend.

The "New" is a sacred place founded by unheralded hard men and women who believed in backwoods adventure and good times with friends. Long appreciated, ego-less, and renowned for it's understated locals, the New has a vibe. The "New" crew who put on the Rendezvous-Maura, Gene, Kenny, Elaina, Heather, Chris, Shawn and all the countless "locals" who stepped up to contribute to this event epitomize that ethos. Self promotion has never been the way of the "New". So in the aftermath of big party hype, let us not forget or lose our prospective. It is not about first ascents, big numbers, or who did what to make it happen. It is about the tribe, the community coming together to celebrate and dance to the beat of a good cause, reveling in a sacred place where ego takes a back seat to camaraderie and compassion. forgive me my rant, but their are those I hope heed this and reel it in. thank you all that came and gave.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the weekend. Not all were taken at the Rendezvous: too much good stuff happening before and after, too. Sorry no climbing photos. I suck at shooting climbers. I like shooting people, though. Doug and Nate Gold Our man, Daniel Even cowgirls get the blues... Real women like to eat. Love the secret smile Elaina... oDub stickin' it to Dean Potter Vinny directing the beer line Trouble 1 and Trouble 2 This guy was payched. He'd just signed up for the Alpine Club My ever-respectful son, Mason The ever respectful Lydia. Kurt Going off Kenny: $14,000 and counting j_ung being respectful in the back Jessa spewing beta Gene and Maura-the world's best hosts. granite_girl at the Trango booth Blaze and Kenny going off Beaver showing us how it's done. Amy Pickering You can see all my Rendezvous photos at http://ranchexitphoto.zenfolio.com/ Enjoy, Mal
