Hi Core,
I know this won't help specifically for italy, but I've seen adaptors for sale in many outdoors stores in europe so you can use a "screw on" (jetboil/pocket rocket etc) type stove with a "clamp on" (camping gaz) type cylinder. Maybe keep an eye out for one of those, and then you have all bases covered!

Hey folks.

Seems I got the opportunity to get to climb in September. Chances are, that I will be in the Gorges d'Omblèze area for around ten days. If anybody is willing to chime in...

BTW, I saw that you, Julia and Thomas, both already climbed there. Is there anything particular to mention? Or any particular cool climbs in the 6a-ish area?

Greets

edit: What does that 'L1' is supposed to tell me in the routes description?

Cory - fuel compatible with MSR stoves is widely available in Europe (it may be butane but it'll work ok). Last time I went to Italy I bought fuel in Munich but I'm sure you can get it in Arco and other places.
Julia - I thought Congo Star was completely bolted by the gardien of the refuge a while ago - just as you say in your description. The topo says "friends inutil" - not for me (today I fell on a 5.9 on Cathedral:)

Hi All,

I am traveling to Northern Italy and need some information on camping fuel for my stove. Does anybody know if the fuel canisters in the mountain shops are compatible (fit and fuel content) with the MSR canister-mount stoves sold in the US?

it's the same with cars. they take the same stuff as in the US, ergo they will sell the same stuff here. and italy is no 3rd world in this regard.
difference with cars is the mileage...

If you take your GPL-powered car to the US you might be in trouble..
Once I was trying to buy fuel in Grindenwald, asked for MSR or Primus and was told that they only had Coleman. Went to another store, and they also had nothing but Coleman.. It turned out their Coleman was exactly what I needed: butane/propane canisters similar to MSR. In the US, however, Coleman is heavy propane canisters, not compatible with MSR-type stoves at all.

Hey eurofreaks!
I'm bored, whatever happened to all the banter around here? Mad
I want I sitrep on what you are all doing now!
However mundane or uninteresting, I want badly written (or well written) trip reports of going to the bar, climbing the climbs, or even funny things at work. Smile

Not much to tell here... I'm sitting and procrastinating the two last days in my current job, facing a two weeks vacation in the area of Grenoble, climbing with some friends, then a week at home and starting the new job, then two weeks in western Germany to get into the new company, in between which I hope to see stone for a beer or two... boring, really Tongue

Hey, now that I am living in Germany, I am a eurofreak by default Cool

You don't want to know what I am doing right now...then you would be really bored!

Had a great Saturday in the Sächsische Schweiz though. Got to learn and experience a bit more of what climbing in the Elbsandsteingebirge is all about.
We got a nice late start, and ended up needing to stop for an oil top-up on the way. So, we didn't get to the crag until almost noon, by which time the rock was *almost* dry, so it was all good Laugh
(man, sandstone turns really soft when it's wet!)
I couldn't resist the opportunity to jump on the first IV we came across (mostly becaus it was right next to our "base camp", and one of the other guys said it had "at least 5 good slings"). Turns out, what looked like a thread from the ground, wasn't.... and the little hole with the notch above that, barely held the 5mm cord I laid in it, let alone a potential fall. After much up-and-down climbing, swearing, a bit of shaking and much browning-of-the-pants (after a two month break from climbing, my headspace wasn't prepared for even a IV) I finally ran it out up to the first decent thread. After that, I felt much better, and even laid my first Lochschlinge (lit. hole-sling: a fig. 9 stuffed in a hole...) to protect the top out. It was fun, in a scary kind of way Smile
I deferred the job of leading to the other, more experienced, climbers after that.
A couple of VIIbs later, the decision was made to tackel the Ostkante (VIIc w/ extra "support") on the Zackenkrone. After watching the leader attempt multiple tries to start the 2nd pitch (I was still on the ground), came the call from above, "um, Gabe, you wouldn't happen to have a long sling, would you?". After gathering a couple slings, I climbed up to join the other two. Upon arrival, I was informed that the long sling was to be used to hold the foundation of the "baustelle" in place, while the leader climbed onto his shoulders, to get past the rather evil roof. I belayed....
All in all an interesting experience. Kind of cool to climb in a place where standing on someone's shoulders is still kosher Angelic
(didn't get to stand on anyone's shoulders, but the 2nd stood on mine. I just got a sling from above...Frown)

I am nursing an injury I received while climbing in the Bayerischer VorAlpen. Nasty rockfall during abseiling gave me a pretty nasty gash on my shin. It seems as though it is one of many unlucky episodes last weekend.

Could have been worse..

Preparing for gym season..
