I've seen Reefer Madness, but paraquat pot....no, I am not familiar with that one.

Reefer Madness is just downright hilarious.

Reefer Madness is all true... people that do that reefer stuff are just insane... jumping out of windows and everything!!!! I just LOVE the maniacal laugh of the people toking up. Great flick award winning classic cult film.

One of the best conspiracy theories behind illegality of marijuana that I have heard is that the paper producers made it illegal because hemp is faster, cheaper, and easier to fashion into all the paper products that the aborists supply. As far as staying on topic... I personally save it for the "celebretory smoke" after a climb, but hell... to each their own.

So true. For example, most of the stoners in this thread seem to know the difference between a sight, a cite and a site. Do you Einstein?

SAY, there is a difference between what you said and perhaps what you meant to say. You are the poster child of your own point, the exception that proves the rule?

Oops.

There's obviously a big difference between someone saying one thing while meaning something completely different versus mistakenly using a synonym. Or are you just a full on pedant?

Do you think Einstein ever made spelling errors?

Actually, the "conspiracy theory" about paper manufacturing industry working to outlaw and demonize hemp is true.

Hearst Paper was, in part, behind the begining of cannabis prohibition.

This thread is pretty much reflective of the Drug War in general--Those of us "stoners" who favor freedom and the American way are armed with facts to back up our side of the argument.

The prohibitionists are mainly hurling insults and empty invective.

I apologize for seeming "unfocused." I guess the fact that I have a much better idea of what I'm talking about and more facts on my side might make it seem that I'm "unfocused."

I am still offended by the idea that smoking pot and slavery are morally equvalent.

There are so many good reason to re-legalize marijuana, and so few reasons to keep it outlawed, the anti-prohibitionist ends up sounding like a zealot

Like I've said at least a couple times before--The government has no authority to tell me what I can or can't do with my own body.

Back at work from four days of climbing, and I've a couple more notable ticks on my list now.

One: Open Book (III/IV, 5.9) in Garnet Canyon, done in 6 hrs. round trip. Crux pitches led by my friend, who was 3 bowls "gone" at the time.

Two: Baxter's Pinnacle with 3 deviations from the standard south ridge- Seizure Disorder, a .10 variation to the first pitch; Gray Ramp, a loose .9 variation to the second pitch; the north face, a John Gill .10 alternative to the summit pitch with 30 year old pins and limited pro. My partner led all of these after a few bowls.

Just trying to provide an example to counter all of the marijuana opponents who are rarely providing us with any sort of tangible evidence of their zealotously bigoted stances.

You were the one making a BIG DEAL about being able to understand a basic sentence written in English. That you muffed that very sentence despite your clarity, sobriety and superior intellect was too funny to pass on.

And just what is a "full on pendant" anyway? I guess I'm an old stoner who has trouble with basic sentences written in English, but I thought a pendant was something you hang on a Christmas tree or a yardarm?

alpine rock , its good having yu back to post your knowledge, i totally agree with the stuff you say, threads like these just make one angry sometimes, i understand if you dont smoke pot , i could care less really, but once you start bashing it just proves our point that these people could actually benefit from a toke or two. i love the overall opinion of non-smokers: stoners are dumb. I think we have proved them wrong. but anyways, good to hear a knowledgeable post.

Need and enjoy are very different things.

A pendant is something that hangs around your neck.

A pedant is a person who intentionally flaunts his knowledge. Hence I am being pedantic right now.

Edit: See, being straight and sober has me taking all the wrong sides. If I were stoned right now I'd turn off my computer and stay out of all this sh!t.

Breaking the law is wrong
Smoking pot is against the law
Therefore, smoking pot is wrong

You are making an invalid deductive inference here. Your first statement is a false proposition: Breaking the law is not necessarily wrong. There is a great American tradition of ignoring laws which are unjust.

The fact that your argument starts with a false proposition invalidates the deductive inference you're attempting to make. Therefore, your conclusion is invalid.

The legal status of cannabis is irrelevant. The effects, both positive and negative, are negligible.

Prohibition is unAmerican.

Thank you for a breath of intelligent fresh air.

Honest question. not a troll.

Why do you climb? Because it makes you feel good. Why? Because it releases endorphins and dopamine in your brain. If you climb, run, play music, or do anything for the sheer pleasure of it, you're indulging in a chemical high. If you get edgey when you don't do it for a while, then you are chemically dependent.

Judging people who artificially expand the boundaries of their nuero-chemical existance and experience is rather naive... especially when you are singling out one single vector of that experience among the hundreds commonly used and abused in the world today; nicotine, caffeine, sugar/choclate, narcotics, violence, alcohol, power, sex...

And how do all you puritans feel about consuming a substance more addictive than heroine at the crags, of consuming it openly and sharing it with complete strangers, people who may never have been exposed to that drug before? A drug that actually IS one of the two main gateway drugs in America (the other, despite all the government propaganda claims and skewed polls, being alcohol)?

I'm talking about tobacco/nicotine, somthing that has killed quite a few members of my family (along with that other gov't-subsidized substance, ethanol) and mnore than one of my friends... something that marijuana has never, in my memory, done to anyone, no matter where, when , how, or how often they consumed it.

If your government says that you can smoke that plant, which will kill you, and has no redeeming values, but you can't smoke that one, which won't, and which has actual medical applications... are you supposed to be dumb enough to believe that your government always knows best?

i strongly disagree. the ability to put forth a thought that is compelling, cogent, well-crafted, and technically correct, is a basic yardstick of overall intelligence.

In general I agree, but notice the lack of capitalization in your posts. Is this an indication of limited ability, or simply recognition of a lower standard of formality accepted in this medium? Rhetorical question, but you see my point? After you've read your millionth spelling flame or so, they just don't carry the same punch they used to. Its kind of like the old usenet rule that any thread is officially declared dead once somebody brings up Hitler... Oops!

BTW Bumblie, its a homonym.

As for the current topic, I think that whether you like pot or not it should be legalized for adults, regulated and taxed. Remove a source of funding for criminals, free up law enforcement, jail space, and enforcement dollars. Use the monetary windfall for resistance education and youth programs. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I sure hope they don't make climbing illegal in Canada, because of it's addictive qualities.

Remember, the speed limit is only an estimate.

Joe Simpson, Leo Houlding, countless climbers of Yosemite's golden age, Doug Scott, Jon Krakauer... REINHOLD MESSNER! All climbers who smoke. Sure Mike and Lance have great athletic talent, but this is a climbing-related message board and website. Personally, I respect the climbers I've named as much as or more than your list of "uber-athletes".

"uber-athlete"... give me a break. Messner, Simpson, and others do what they do at the world's highest elevations.

In short, syllogistic-terms, my thinking can be summarized as follows:

Breaking the law is wrong
Smoking pot is against the law
Therefore, smoking pot is wrong

Be nice—don’t be a doink!

GT

Breaking laws that are inflexible and non-evolving is not wrong. Personally, I will not live within a judicial framework that I do not believe in. However, I know the risks and if I am caught I know I will be punished, no matter how "wrong" that may be.
