Now, to go collect pop cans and donate plasma to afford the foray to Ouray.

hey -- if it were easy it would be called "sport climbing".
What, do I have to hawk a kidney on the black market instead? (that could be arranged) :P

If the JTree gathering doesn't conflict, I'd LOVE to attend, totally gumbied out

So far, the J-Tree gathering is scheduled to be the same weekend...

Hip, hip, Ouray!

(sorry; it had to be done)

k.

Nice Katy!!! Good to know people who actually know how the town's name is pronounced. When I hear people talk about what a jammin time they had in OO-ray, I know they're sprayin cuz otherwise they'd know how to pronounce the town's friggin name   !

Joebuzz and I are tentatively planning on attenting this year. I spent last MLK ice climbing in Lee Vining, and the whole time I was there I was like "dammit - I wish I was in Ouray!", promised myself I'd get back there this winter. Might as well do it during the ice fest.

I'll know for sure in December once I get my time off approved since it's so far in the future right now. I'm 90 pct sure I'm going at this point...pending a REALLY warm winter and bad ice there, then I might not be up for the 18 hour drive from LA to climb on slush  .

I ice climbed a few years ago and this was about the feeling i got from it:

...stabbing the beveled edge beneath the surface of the glistening skin, a tingle shooting up my arm into my grey matter, eyes dialating, pulse quickening, breathing in long forceful chains, as my muscles tighten, and contract and i begin to get light headed and feel the effects of adrenalin coursing deep throughout my being......

yeah im in, im actually buying crampons this week, but im not sure what im getting. ill be going for sure. bringing wine. cameras, and my fun talkative boisterous self.
im in.

Zins, Sins, debauchery, and a good all around time! This time though i may bring a few different Etoh toxins to make the hangover slightly less overwhelming. I think the 128 proof bourbon will fix that.
Josh, Ill keep my secret weapon stowed the entire time.
and the cabin maybe a go, Im planning on being there 16-18 leaving early 19 to get back to work. its a b*tch but someon has to do it...C'est la vie....
wait, no one monitors in french here....

Moabbeth,

Not so fast - I know of a few local ranchers who say "Ooray". As in - "Boy, you have no business being in Ooooray" I am not saying their right but they have ranched that area longer than I have been alive.

Bye way, Check out how the Hurricane local's pronounce their town when you are on the way Zion. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'll be in Hurricane in a couple weeks, I'll have to check that out!

I've never heard locals call it OOray. I always wondered how it was pronounced and my first time there I asked like 4 different shopkeepers and they all said yur-ray. And in all my visits back there since...and many drunken eves at the Portal swilling with locals, it's always the same. Hurray...Ouray! Ah hell, no matter what people call it, it's still the best! I love my lil Ouray.

Ummm, I guarantee you will not find these people in town. I am sure you are right and this is the way I say it too. But to them, I am still a God damn tourist from New York.

Have fun. It sounds like a great trip.

Well Geo, I'm not sure I should take Spanish lessons from anyone in your neck of the woods (just up the road from "Buena Vista"). And I know they are only for gringos south of the border but margaritas son mas buena.

Skibabe, you can't keep that nom de plume till you learn to tele. But, alas, it won't be from me this season. However, I have a friends I can crash with in You-ray so the Fest isn't out of the question yet (he says before the surgery). OTOH scuba diving is the only thing I've done that's equalled the rush of skiing deep powder so there's more to Mexico than booze and women ;-)

As for Colorado pronunciations:

So, in summary:

We've got a bald headed former Marine Pilot who demands we call him "Mister," which was always a term reserved for new officers (i.e. "Mr. Marks, why don't you go do your lieutenant paperwork and leave us to handle the work?"...

We've got a water-spraying, hose-rolling, knuckle-dragging, ladder-carrying firefighter who surfs...

We've got an artist who is trying to sell artwork to fund his climbing habit...

We've got an Arizona resident who's willing to sell her kidney to fund the trip just so she can climb ice in a Hawaiian shirt... and perhaps a grass skirt?

We've got an Italian woman who speaks French, but isn't permitted to drink the night before climbing (see: RMNP Gathering thread for "Poster Girl for Suck" award...)

We've got someone willing to bring all the booze we can drink, including 128 proof Bourbon and a bottle of "Seven Deadly Zins," even though he should know better to offer (again, see: RMNP Gathering.)

[Added as an edit, so Tradkelly doesn't feel left out and go home to cry!] We've got a gnarly all-around climber who comes up with ideas like "The Midnight Naked 5.7 Slab Group Climb."

This sounds like a strange, diverse, and generally boisterous crowd that will quickly fall into the throes of drunkeness, debauchery, lewd behavior, and other assorted types of misconduct.

OK, I'm in, and I'm bringing two pans of Lasagna (one meat, one veggie.) Someone bring the wine (red AND white, please.)

Provided I can get the time off work. I'll let ya know ASAP. And I'd prefer to stay in the cabin.

Oh, and Clyde? When you're in Mexico nursing your injured knee, be sure to ask for Raoula. Tell her Geo and I sent ya.

(See above for the reason for the edit.)

Geez, Jeff. You left me out. The one who stays up with the ones who got too hung over to climb (or, well, anything) the next day, gets up just slightly after the Marine rotorhead, totally aids a 7-pitch heinous OW in Lumpy, and then stays up to drink the next night. And I'll just leave out the 5.8X the next morning, dude. I'm disappointed in you. I'll be climbing, luau or not. Just don't stand under me.

Oh, and I'm in for the haus. Whatever it turns out to be. Beats a stinky bag in a cold tent. Bring your swim suits - this time there's gonna be hot springs, not just some 'i already took a shower' kinda merde hot tub. :D
