I can understand the reasoning behind the apparent trend that (assumed heterosexual) rockclimbing guys seem to a) want a climber chick; or b) want their present chick to climb.

I’d like climber opinions on another trend.
I’ve noticed that guys seem intimidated when a girl attains too much muscle. Doesn’t climbing naturally build muscle, be it tone or in some cases mass? What defines the fine line between “good climber” and “she looks manly”.

I can understand that with a lot of muscle, women can loose their femininity (hardcore female body builders, for instance). But with climbing comes some toning for most people. What justifies using the sport you love in common against them?

Opinions, please.

I love that my girl climbs and the body that comes with it. Women who climb, for th most part, have great bodies that tend to be in great shape. Much different from the women body builders on ESPN whose arms are bigger than my legs! I find it to be true that a lot of climber chicks are hot, not intimidating!

guys are generally kinda dumb (I speak from experience being a guy and all )

Some people can't think for themselves. How many people would willinging go against generations of ingrained gender roles and just judge someone for who they are.

Me, I think muscular chicks are sexy. But I think smart girls are sexy too, so I'm just kinda wierd

Case in point:

Tiffany Campbell is fvcking huge, but is one of the cutest chicks I have met.

I don't think it is intimidating to see chicks with some guns. I appreciate when people take care of their body, and if chicks like Tiff get strong from climbing hard (she was a college gymnast too) then how can you fault them for that? Also if a chick climbs a wall, I would expect her to be a little beefy. It takes more than 90 pounds to fight the pig all day, although I wouldn't mind taking a very petite 90 pound girl up a wall and doing all the work in exchange for "favors".

TRADitionally yours,

What about lisa rands?? She is pretty musccelly, and someday she will realize that she should marry me;-). Or not as the case may be. I think muscles are very sexy on women, and so what if she climbs better than me, most people do....

The looks you see the guys giving the gals
at your local crag, is not the look of
intimidation, but something quite differant
I think women who rock, rule!
And I think it would take a
very insecure guy to
think any differant.

Muscle tissue is muscle tissue. So what?
Women who are ripped are fine. Women who are ripped and who feel they have to compete with men all the time are just as personally offensive to me as men who are ripped and feel they have to compete all the time.

I met a runner gal the other day who had the most ripped leg muscles I've ever seen on a woman. Not weightlifter style, but lean and mean runner style...
I had to hide the fact that my "other head" found her extremely attractive....It was awfully hard to carry on a whole conversation with my legs crossed so tightly...

i thought that from the forum title that you meant girls that climb better then men which is a way different issue.

on this topic tiff cambell is huge but still feminine yada yada what everyone else says

I on the other hand was a stick boy through highschool and am still skinny, I am fvcking sick of being called effeminate (granted by arsehole guys) because I dont have huge guns or a ripped chest.

Masculintiy and Feminity should have nothing to do with body image and everything to do with you as an individual and how you personally handle your body type ie there is no one woman or man

Wow, addiroids...you really ARE a Cali Dirtbag!

Anyhoo, here's my 2 sense..

Guys that I've dated that are non-climbers (which, by the way, never lasts long ) tend to be intimidated by strength in girls. And it probably doesn't help their ego when I win at arm wrestling

But climbers? They seem to find chicks with guns very sexy. Hey-just means they're better climbers

There is a world of difference for me between a woman who body builds and a woman who acquires muscle from climbing, running, rowing, playing softball, etc.

I don't find woman who body build all that attractive. there are exceptions.

Haven't met a woman who climbs and has muscle that is not attractive and feminine. Nike is a case in point.

some guys may be intimidated by a woman who climbs better than them, but tough. lot's of woman climb better than i do (my gym partner climbingjoy does). my daughter climbs better than i do. so what.

Personally I enjoy a girl that looks healthy. just as the others say tho, those girls with necks bigger than their heads are very unatractive. I don't mind a little meat on the bone be it muscle or non-muscle and I said JUST A LITTLE, which goes either way. I think tiff campbell is cute for being so "well developed" in the muscle department... because it's all power and not showing off, but some women do go so far as to losing a lot of their femeninity, because of all the muscle in part, but also because their way of moving is no longer femenine and this usually has little to do with muscles but with attitude. So to answer the question is no, I'm not intimidated by strong female climbers, just turned off by unfemenine women.

I think competition between one and one's partner is good as long as it doesn't become a race to prove something about the other!

power to the ppl! (guys AND gals)

Well...
yep...here I go.
MY Rant:
I get digs in from others, women at work, the husband...as if muscle is a" bad". I feel the need to defend.

I find this an interesting subject.
I've been all too concerned...from feedback of unnamed peoples...about no fat. My body changes, loss of weight...gain of muscle.

I have loved the results, climbing has done for my physical appearance.

I've gotten comments, from my husband.
Some? Not so very positive.

I've previously been overweight by 60 lbs ... so, my body's changes??? Yes, muscle is a good thing.

Climbing, I love. It's fun. It's challenging.
I've not hidden my love for the human body...since taking up climbing.
It truly is poetic. Tone women or men.
I love to see the back muscles, and the forearms...
calves...
It's ALL just amazingly graceful.

I do feel the need to defend myself.
Like it's a bad.
I know it's not.
But, how do you explain to others...your love and passion for climbing.
It's damn hard.

I'm lucky to have found climbing.
This result...may intimidate?
I'm feminine.
I'm all GURRL!!
I'm not a whiner.
but, the gurl is alive and well!!
no male muscle here.

All girl.

Amen Erica! Climberchic is right. In general, men are intimidated by strong women...physically, mentally... those that have got it together...

But climbing men don't seem to get intimidated. I think most realize that this is not a gender-contest.... just because a woman is strong does not mean he's less than a man!

I'm definitely not in want for muscular bulk - all the girls on my lacrosse team are like that, we were just bitching today about the size of our calves from the hill sprinting. . .

But on that note - I think thin guys are cute. So . . . cheers!

Strong girls are alright. Crazy girls are bad. Las Vegas girls are dangerous jail bait. "Fight Club" quoteing girls are bad muthers (Samual Jackson style).

I havn't quoted like that since I was a school girl.

I myself like a gurrrl that is in great shape. It is even better if she climbs or does anything that involves being outdoors.

I am not into the frail girly girl that has to be made up all the time. It just doesn't do it for me. Sorry, but I like the adventurous type that doesn't mind getting dirty and spending a lot of time outside..

I hope to meet one of them outdoorsy chicky's sometime in the future.

So back to the muscle thing. It isn't a bad thing at all!! In fact it is a VERY, VERY GOOD thing!! So all you Gurrls out there be very proud about it!!

I would not be intimidated by any climber who could out climb me, and who was a much more experienced all-arounder than I, regardless of their sex.

For instance, if I were climbing with Chris Sharma; I would not be intimidated, nor would I feel sorry for my own techniques/abilities. I would try to have as much fun with the guy as possible.

This would be the same if I were to climb with say Lynn Hill, or Tiffany Campbell. They could most definitely out climb me by all means, though I would just go out there to have as much fun as possible.

Besides, it's a perk anyway getting to climb with the girls. They're not too bad to look at don't cha know!

I don't know if this is being covered or not, but 'most' guys can't handle if their 'girl' climbs better than them. I know of a few instances were boyfriends/husbands either quit or stopped climbing as much when the girl started to out-climb them. As from my experience it has just been sort of a competition

Yesterday, I was trying to change my license plates, but one of the screws was rusted into place. Try as I might, I couldn't get the damn thing out, but I kept trying. Eventually, I broke the screw driver tip in my attempts. The screw driver was my Dad's favorite, so I felt pretty bad.

Later that night, my parents and I are eating dinner, and I had forgotten about the screwdriver. All the sudden my dad says, "We need to find a new hobby for Dana."
I give him a confused look, so he responds, "You're too strong. I've never seen anyone break a screwdriver like that before. No more rockclimbing for you."

I'm pretty ripped, especially when I'm climbing a lot. From my experience, I get nothing but admiration for my muscles. If I'm climbing in my sports bra or a tank top, people stare and say stupid things like, "Man, you're ripped." I hate the attention, so I usually wear t-shirts to avoid all the compliments. Now that it's warmer out, though, I'm going to have to suck it up and wear the tank.

Some friendly advice: if you see a muscular girl , you don't need to tell her. She already knows, and she's probably already heard it a gajillion times.

Cheers!
