For the past two years, I've hosted a Columbus Day Weekend Rumney gathering for any/all who care to join me. Twice consecutively makes it a tradition, and who am I to kill the tradition? My family has a camp on the water in Ashland, New Hampshire, around 25 minutes from the Rumney parking lot. There's room for quite a few people to sleep inside and a yard for tents. As long as it doesn't get too outrageous, I can offer everyone a place to sleep. There's typically food on the stove, beer in the fridge and people around the campfire. Good times are had. Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 11th this year. I'd like to once again to a 4-day ordeal, from Friday the 8th to Monday the 11th. It's a few months off but I figured now would be a good time to see how many express interest. New Hampshire is beautiful in mid-October (peak foliage) and the temps are generally pretty good for climbing. Whaddaya think? Fly into Manchester, NH; it's only about 45 min - 1 hour away. Bring draws and rope. Let the locals bring the oversized pads; we will all be more than happy to share, and we don't bite (well maybe Jake).

Are the rest of us who made fun of Jake still welcome? My sport weenie habit has gone completely unfulfilled for a whole year and I'm PRETTY sure I've got a lead better than "Clippety - who- cares" in me. 8^) Can we make fun of him that actual weekend?

I don't suppose anyone noticed but I've made an effort to number each differently... the first one was "First," the second was "2.0" and this one is "III." This very well might be the last October I spend in New Hampshire so we gotta do this right.

I was there last year, and said I wouldn't miss another ... and I meant it. I'm in. Hopefully I'll be able to be there on Monday this time - but not sure. I'm starting a new job late in September, so it'll depend on whether Monday is a holiday for the firm (unlikely).

I will make all attempts at making it out there - 'course, I haven't been able to climb since January (damn rehab), but I should be able to start training soon... The best way to fly in, is MHT (Manchester), and drive north from there - it's less than an hour. Grant, James? You guys up for getting there early again? - d.

For those who do not get to Rumney but once a year, there are new routes and one new area that were put up last Fall/early Spring. Even more reason to come!

Pffft... if I remember right (which I often do), my Rumney thread two years ago was the first gathering thread to do that. But I'll forgive you; you're new. Anyways, post up/PM me to be added to the list. I won't go by any earlier posts since plans change often.

I actually did 10 pts better on verbal than math. (I always liked those problems: "If the sum of Jules' two scores is equal to 1330 and the verbal is ten points greater than the math, what was her verbal score?" I miss Algebra I. It was so easy.)

Had a dream about the first Rumney gathering the other day... actually, the only it occurred to me to check this site again was to see if it was going on again this year. I've been looking for some place to go for that weekend 'cause I don't like Toronto all that much and I need to get out, but I don't seem to have any way of getting down there.

I expect to be there again this year and hopefully early. kriso9tails: I can give you a ride if you can make it early. Did you finish in Ottawa now? E-mail me or call me at home after the 3rd October. Your mother will have the number. renhoek: Don't worry about ability as gatherings have the full spectrum and are as much about meeting others, having fun, and learning more, as much as simply climbing. I would like to head to Cannon Cliff one day but weather and the availability of sherpas may be a factor there. Anyway that can be sorted out later and I'll see folks soon.

Grant, the other Grant is happy you're coming. Let me know how early you'll be up (we will go up Thursday afternoon; I don't know if you intend to come earlier than that) and I'll make sure you're locked out and the police will meet you there. I kid. This is going to be a fun one.

In reply to: Is anyone headed to Rumney from the toronto area? You may be able to carpool with either me or someone else depending when you are looking to go down there and return.

Hi All, If there's still room, I'd like to tag along saturday to sunday. I've also got some room in my car, so I can still offer rides up from Boston for those who can also only make sat.-sun. can I just meet up with people at the parking lot early sat. morning? Looking forward to it!

crag i'm sure there is room.. i'm sure there will be more than what's on the list but last year we had a ton and was plenty of space for saturday i'd say find someone or a group of folks you'd like to climb with beforehand (pm's and such) and either meet them or have them leave you a note on the board. Sunday will be much easier since you'll be at the house and be able to team up with folks cya there jake

Is there any trad climbers who would not mind someone following? I've been wanting to get into trad, but have not had any luck finding someone who would show me the ropes (excuse the pun). PM or Email me ... Thanks in advance!

I'm roadtripping down to the area for Oct. 9-16 with a few friends. Anybody got some recommendations for camping? Good places to eat? We're planning for some sport/bouldering at Rumney and hope to hit Pawtuckaway and maybe Lincoln Woods for some bouldering. Possibly the Gunks as well, but less likely. Any suggestions?

I've placed some information for camping in the routes database for Rumney. Pawtuckaway and Lincoln Woods, I can't help you with ... never been there. Yet, there are usually a lot of places to stay if you don't mind looking around a bit ... leafpeeper season and all. See you in a couple of days!! :D :D :D :D

The directions have been received, bags packed, tank full, gear check complete, LETS GO!!! .... wait ... damn ... it's next weekend! For those who are camping, check the temps at http://www.weather.com/outlook/driving/local/03266?lswe=03266&lwsa=WeatherLocalDriving It appears that it will be a little chilllllly in the wee hours of the mornin' . Better bring cold weather sleeping gear!

Large parts of NH had their first hard, killing frost last night, which means the prime sending season of Indian Summer is imminent. The frost also serves to kill off any straggling bugs that were about. Bring a warm sleeping bag if you're sleeping outside at Jules', and for your climbing pack toss in some warm outerwear, a hat, and maybe gloves.

Thanks for the heads up. I might not have thought about gloves this early in the year. But I will DEFFINETELY bring the 15 degree bad. I am getting excited. I have a guide book for the area, but have never been there. I am so hoping for good weather. Does any one know the number of people who are deffinetly going? and who those people are? I was thinking about bringing some MEAD that I made last year and I want to know how much to bring...and the answer "all of it" is not going to happen. Later all,

It was a lil' chillly this mornin'. Didn't have to brake any ice off the dogs water dish, but did have to scrape the car windows. For those of you who are sleeping outside, one word ... longjohns! Bring the insulation!! The hat idea will be great for sleeping and sittin' in the cool shade whilst belayin' 53 hours and a short drive!

It looks like it'll be a shorter trip for me than expected - I'll be heading up by 11 pm friday night, and leaving saturday evening after climbing all day. If anyone needs a ride from boston or along the way, let me know - so far, it's just me and a buddy with space in the car and a four man tent.
