WTF does this have to do with TRAD climbing? I think this is in the wrong forum. Get thee to community. I can only stay in community for a short time before getting this really hideous rash...... I also start experiencing some serious "post rage" (kinda like road rage but worse) same thing happens with the beginners forum except I start frothing at the mouth and muttering "omigod you people are sooooo gonna die"

Hey rockdildo, chill out! Get your gear, go to your local crag, listen to Bob Marley on the way, and be skankin' all day long. In all my years of climbing I have found this: During a climb music will invariably get stuck in your head, so why not make it music that is positive, has a good beat, you can sing along with, and reflects a connection with nature? For me, its Bob, but you know, whatever flips your skirt.

the song i play once i hit the parking lot, park and bust out a smoke is:::::::::IRON MAIDEN'S RUN TO THE HILLS.....very appropriately themed... while climbing, i'll often start singing reggea or other rock that sounds good when just "sung"....very relaxing......like mainly topics about "ZEN and CLIMBING" i find music does the same....since i'm a newbee to leading trad, when ever i get in a spot that i'm having trouble protecting (even though its easy and i can run it out, i don't think that, trying to get a good habbit of protecting before climbing) i just mellow out by singing......songs like stairway to heaven(and other zeppellin), the chillies, etc etc etc..just that mellow sounding singing....that what i do.....helps me remember some of the tricks i have racked up and then i can drop in the pro... of course me "LEAVING THE PARKINGLOT" music is always VERY loud and heavy....cus i need to stay awake after long day of climbing and I"M always driving....so metallica, fear factory, SOAD, RATM, etc etc etc etc (most of my fav metal bands....but no opeth or nin....too mellow....good but as good as it is...its too well flowing and will put me out....so crank the Coal Chamber on the way home (i don't give a fuck, i;m driving, my vehicle, my music!)

Not climbing, but relating to stuck in the head- 3 days through a 5 day pack trip, realized my brain was going through every Cowboy Junkies album, in order. Musta been the altitude or something. And after seeing Touching the Void "brown girl in the ring, tra la la la la...." won't go away, it was part of my daughters "favorite" educational videocassette. Back to the topic: Jazz, bluegrass or old New Order!

A little old rock, a la AC/DC or Led Zepplin, or anything else. Just pop it in about 10 or so minutes till you get to the climb and get pumped! works like a charm for me and my crew.

What's wrong with all of you? I don't see Pink Floyd on here anywhere!! They obviously, and without any competition, are the best climbing music out there. Led Zeppelin (one of my all-time favorite bands, which I am delighted to see on here a few times) is a distant second. No one comes close to Pink Floyd though...no one. Imagine working your way up some sick-ass alpine line while listening to Echoes or Shine On...oooo it gives me goosebumps! I particularly like those tracks, The Wall-Live in Berlin, Atom Heart Mother, Divisio....well damn, they really don't have anything that is out of place in the mountains. Led Zep has some pretty sweet climbing tunes too. Particular favorites are No Quarter (live version is the best), In My Time of Dying, and pretty much anything off of the "How the West Was Won" album. When it starts getting sketchy or I start to get spooked, I usually croon Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles, calms me right down. Rock on!

For trad, sport, TR, I like more mellow stuff, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Zeppelin, etc. OTOH, I always pictured the soundtrack to bouldering to be more like what you would find on one of Buckethead's last two albums, though. Speed metal riffs over a techno-inspired beat.

Or they just plain forgot. What were we talking about??? Oh yeah, a 35 year old defunct rock band, that's it! I hear they want to tour again, make use of the Gravry Train one more time. Grace Slick said it first, and best: "Old people should not play rock and roll." WORD. DMT

Dingus, your name is apt. Pink Floyd is one of the few rock groups who managed to remain creative, distinct, successful, and lauded by millions for thirty years. Their last original album, the Division Bell, was released in 94, and happens to be one of my personal favorites. Their fame and "freshness" despite their longevity is a feat that very few musical groups can claim. By the time most bands release their last album, its usually because they suck ass and no one wants to hear them anymore. With Pink Floyd, the members retired kings of their proverbial mountain, practically at the top of their game. Need I also mention that "Dark Side of the Moon" broke records for not only its retention of a place at #1 on the Billboard album charts but it is one of the top-selling rock albums of all time. It spent the next 14 years on that list at ranks below #1. Granted, of course, that many people here are talking about how much they enjoy listening to Hendrix, Zeppelin, and many other classic rockers whose music, according to you, is probably too antiquated to be worthwhile. I suppose you don't like any of them either. Your loss really. As Homer Simpson correctly assessed "Everyone knows rock achieved perfection in 1974!" So listen to your Nickleback, Creed, or whatever the hell mainstream modern garbage you consider to be "good music." I'll take my Geritol, smoke my grass, and laugh at you from the tops of mountains you'll never climb. SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!

Yeah, Creed is just another one of those groups who could very easily be Christian if not for the fact that they might be talking about a girl instead of Jesus-kind of depends on the audience. I found a Creed CD in the case in perfect shape on the side of the road. I immediately began playing a game of frisbee with it. The game sort of devolved to "Crush the CD," but I think you get the point. Creed blows big fat donkey balls! That said, I really do hope Pinl Floyd tours again. Man I'd sell my firstborn into slavery to go to a Floyd concert. They really know how to do a proper show!

How about what not to listen to before you climb? I'll cast my first vote for anything by Air Supply! Because you will either jump to your death in a last ditch effort to get their stupid songs out of your head, or plummet to your death when your partner cuts your rope as payback for incessantly singing the horrible songs that are now stuck in his/her head. Or you will be pelted by a cascade or rocks unleashed on you by other climbers who couldn't stand the sound of both of you singing a sappy duet.

Here's the last CD I put together for road tripping. War & Peace songs. Lawyers, Guns & Money replaced Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, because that was too long to fit. If I were doing it over, I'd probably use the Pearl Jam cover of Masters of War. iTunes didn't have Feel Like I'm Fixin to Die, so that was out. Alphabetical order, like most of my CDs. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding Keb' Mo' Battle of Evermore Leslie King & Terra Gold Buffalo Soldier Bob Marley & The Wailers Come Out and Fight The Battering Ram If I Had a Rocket Launcher Bruce Cockburn Lawyers Guns And Money Warren Zevon Life During Wartime Widespread Panic Lives In The Balance Third World Masters of War Bob Dylan Mo Ghile Mear(Our Hero) Sting & The Chieftains Peace Train Cat Stevens State Of Siege Third World Sunday Bloody Sunday U2 The Foggy Dew Annwn The Heathen Bob Marley & The Wailers Tribal War Third World War Edwin Starr

With that, Tom Waits kicks ass. I just found the song, "The Piano Hass Been Drinnking," check out these lyrics, they are quite funny: The piano has been drinking, my necktie is asleep And the combo went back to New York, the jukebox has to take a leak And the carpet needs a haircut, and the spotlight looks like a prison break And the telephone's out of cigarettes, and the balcony is on the make And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking... And the menus are all freezing, and the light man's blind in one eye And he can't see out of the other And the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid, and he showed up with his mother And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking As the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler cream-puff casper milk toast And the owner is a mental midget with the I.Q. of a fence post 'Cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking... And you can't find your waitress with a Geiger counter And she hates you and your friends and you just can't get served without her And the box-office is drooling, and the bar stools are on fire And the newspapers were fooling, and the ash-trays have retired 'Cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking The piano has been drinking, not me, not me, not me, not me, not me hahahaha, awesome

I usually listen to Death Cab for Cutie, Sigur Ros, The Hives, or The Strokes. The Hives gets me pumped up while DCFC and Sigur Ros mellow me out. Good times

Driving to the crag, climbing indoors, talking about climbing, thinking about climbing, Led Zeppelin is in the background. Live, studio, live studio (yeah its there), you just gotta listen. Geez it feels like I should be at a Zeppelin forum instead... But still, don't tell me you haven't busted the Led out!

most music I listen to is relevent to the mood coming into the day. For me it ranges anything from Iron Maiden's "the prisoner" to to Mos Def. Latley I have been aid soloing to Modest Mouse and Built to Spill, it just fits the mood of being alone. If I am relaxing at a bivi or at camp I love listening to Townes Van Zandt.. We all got holes to fill.Them holes are all that's real Some fall on you like a storm Sometimes you dig your own But choice is yours to make And time is yours to take Some dive into the sea Some toil upon the stone To live is to fly Low and high, So shake the dust off of your wings And the sleep out of your eyes His album "Road Songs" is good stuff for road trips. As far as getting mentally connected with a climb I either listen to the surroundings of the natural environment at the moment or use visualization techniques and listen to Tabla Beat Science, a really good mix of traditional Hindu music with turntablism, and drum and bass. happ listening and climbing.
