I don't know if it helps me, but I find myself gruntting anyway. It's kinda a mental thing.

No. Its just like those boneheads at the gym I lift at that grunt or yell. Jackasses, in my opinion. Grunting and yelling, at least in lifting, is usually for show and I find it stupid. However, being a climber, grunting at times happens. It usually happens to me when I'm too pumped or something. Just don't do it on purpose. Nothing wrong when it can't be helped, like during orgasm, but sometimes it is okay on the rock too! Steve

I've noticed when i grunt. Is on hard move that is scary as well. On a Huge stretch move. Or When i'm Pumped. It just happens i agree with wild trail. I think it sick when a climber does it. When we grunt its natrual. Not fake like peeps in the gym.

It seems to happen unintentionaly, usually on a hard route I've not tried before, and then on attempts afterwards, I don't grunt so much. Oh, well, my partners don't mind. I agree, if it's on purpose, the climber's askin' for ridicule.

if you grunt yell or do whatever sort of primal noise you want to HELPS. if you are doing that you are breathing. if you are breathing your muslces are getting oxygen which is a good thing. also if grunting is bad why 5th degree black belts yell when punching thru bricks [ This Message was edited by: clymber on 2002-07-14 17:49 ]

I can't guarantee the validity of this statement, but I was told by a friend that grunting on a hard move increases your power. Could it be because it causes you to contract your abs, which drive your legs, which give you your power?

No. I think its kinda annoying, espically in the gym. It kinda depends on who is doing it, if its some fat chick that cant climb then its dumb. But if its some hot guy tearing it up then he grunts then its okay. Not to be in-equal but you know how it is.

I find myself making noises for three reasons: 1) whimpering, when utterly scared or a Looooong fall. Usually makes things harder and more scary. I try to avoid it. 2) Loud grounting, to prevent myself from giving up. I find that, in the middle of a hard move (mid 5.11 for me), a little voice goes, 'you can't do it.' I grunt to shut it up and smack it around. Usually works. 3) Sometimes, while I'm in the middle of a hard move, my belayer is yakking up a storm. It takes to much energy to stop and say 'excuse me mr. belayer, please do endevor to shut your yap.' Instead, a good old grunt usually shuts him up. Unless you've got one of those who will just talk louder. I suppose its 'hey look at me,' but ya know, your belayer should be paying attention, even if it makes me look like a poser. Its better to look like a poser than a decking, bloody mess.

I'm with cman on that one! If, for one moment, I thought beyond_gravity wasn't being sarcastic...! Hey beyond, Yeah! And we have death wishes and enjoy pain too! Don't forget the sadistic nature of our being. If it weren't for the image of this confounded sport, I'd quit and start golfing! Steve

Huggybone, Whimpering. Yes! Whimpering. This would be me. This happens often. Especially when I hit that one freakish position in which my bad shoulder sends a signal of pain so intense to my brain that I temporarily turn off and peel from the rock with the grace of a lead brick!

Wildtrail - I've been told I have a death wish, and I like the pain that comes from climbing. But hey, I'm just weird like that. About the grunting, I used to make fun of a lot of my other friends that did it, told them they were just showing off, but then one day they pointed out that I was doing it too, but I didn't even notice. I guess sometimes people just can't help it. It never really bothers me though if other people do it, as long as it's not obvious that they're showing off, like if they're on a 5.2 or something.

It helps me at times. I think it's best when done sparingly, though. I like to hear people moaning and groaning when they are really pushing themselves. It's great to know you're working yourself to the point that you have to cry out in pain.

I tend to grunt when I'm pulling a tough move. I don't intend to, it's sorta an involuntary thing. I guess it helps me get through the crux sometimes cuz it feels like I'm releasing pent up strain. Dunno why but it's true. [ This Message was edited by: squirrelgirl on 2002-07-14 23:18 ]
