It's a balmy 107 in Tucson, so I've already begun dreaming of the beautiful fall climbing season. And with it comes the annual gathering.
Sept? Oct? Flagstaff? Queen Creek? Pebbles, bolts, cracks?
Bobd? BVB? Curt? Jay? Art? Kelly? the return of Erica and Ivan?
Campfire slander, beer and Smirnoff Ice, getting romped at the Forks?
Whatevah. Let's pick a weekend in either September or October and commence the 35 page thread of banter, spray and nonsense!
zozo and elvislegs, you would be my two most honored out-of-state guests (alongside Jay, of course).

*****LOGISTICS 'N STUFF*****
What: 4th Annual AZ Gathering
When: Oct 7-9, 2005- Columbus Day weekend
Where: Flagstaff. Camping venue: Fay Canyon
Directions from Phoenix: Take I-17 North until just before Flagstaff. Exit Lake Mary Road (#339) and take a right approx. 3.2 miles to Forest Road 867, just before the first cattle guard. You'll notice the "Camping and Campfires Prohibited" sign. No worries. We are camping just beyond the restricted area. Proceed down this road until it makes a large dog-leg turn to the right. At this turn there is a huge parking and camping area. A normal two wheel drive passenger car can make it to this point with no problems--as long as you steer around the major ruts in the road--and as long as the road is not real muddy. Per BVB, continue about 1/8 mile past this to more pristine, less ravaged, still legal camping.

Damn abstentee-used-to-post-a-lot goon checks in with "Jacks?" You'll go where the woman tells you to go, jerky...just like I do. :oops:
Count me in, guys! I suppose I wouldn't mind a weekend at Jacks -- plenty of camping and climbing. Only problem is it's no where close to civilization for that late evening romp for a resupply of beer, pizza, or donuts. I'm open to suggestions. Early October would guarantee better weather, I think.

This absentee-used-to-post-a-lot-goon is back, this time with CABLE MODEM! At least when I can pry Hillary away from MY computer keyboard. And Jacks is the ill sick shiznit. There's lots of routes from 5.5-5.13, friendly bolting, you can always find a shady wall, and plenty of free camping. Another optiion would be to climb somewhere in Flag on one day and caravan down to Jacks the next day. The overnight temps might be a little chilly in Oct for camping in Flag though. At least for my taste. Ed should be OK since he has a little extra "insulation".

Might be in for camp on a Friday and climbing on Saturday, but I'll be working the Sunday, so I'll not be free all weekend.
Depends on when, too... I'll be in Wyoming for a week in mid-August, then Colorado for a week in September, so timing might be an issue.

I like Jack's. Lot's of people and lots of fun. Queen Creek is free too plus it's actually enjoyable during the fall months. Jack's can be pretty chilly at night in the fall.

I will NOT drive into town (slitting my wrists would have been more fun)

I just thought of Homestead when I saw sonso45's post. It is nice 'temperature-wise' in October. Lots, free, friendly, and not too far from civilization for resupplying purposes. Great limestone.

I'd show up for one of these Gathering thingys if it were at the Forks... always wanted to check those cracks out, never made it there yet.
Is the weather at Paradise Forks pleasant in September/October/whenever you are planning to do this thing?

So if it matters, October would good for me. I'm on tour all of September. But, I say we should hit somewhere that has trad and sport. Make everyone happy, and more people will show up. Not to be an a$$ but I don't think I'm gonna make a trip out there for just sport. I'm not trying to piss anyone off, just telling the truth.
But I would love to come, and that is what I have to say about that.

Zac, is that another vote for Flagstaff et. al.?
Overlook (trad to 5.10, mainly), Forks (splitters and splitterish cracks), The Pit (sport), bouldering @ Priest Draw, Kelly Canyon, Elden and Glorias (snicker), Chuffalo Park, BVB's many seekrit spots?
Many options in Flagstaff.
J, we could drive about. Jacks is kinda far, but not that far.
If we have a big group though, the Fay Canyon camping might be better than taking over the Jacks cg. It's probly surprisingly limited once you cram a bunch of rc.commies in it.

Yep. If we do this in, say, November, we could also include a snow slog speed run up and down Humpheries.

Fay Canyon the same place as last year? If so, we don't want to camp there. I got a ticket for camping there earlier this summer. My vote would be the free camping along Lake Mary (just past the entrance to the Pit, turn right, take the left just after the road changes to dirt, and the free camping is about a half mile down, on the right.
Think: A lake, stocked with trout... catch and cook fresh trout for dinner. Some almonds, a bit of sage.... good eating.
