Dfinitely not wallface or looking glass nc. whitesides is close. Original Route is approx. 800 feet. That's the route not the rock height. Haven't been to Looking Glass SC. Bad memory says cliff height was 1500' (?)

I'll second that. And if it's not the tallest, it's close. Deffinitly as close to big wall as we get out east.

I think it's Crow Hill. or maybe that slab at hammond pond.
No, It's definitely cannon. Cannon squeeks out about 1,000 feet at the "big wall" section of the cliff.

how about the tallest cliff in within 2 hours of harrisburg pa, and make it over 150ft. , now theres a callenge for you... try and figure out that one.
( i don't think there is one ?! ) ( then again i don't get the chance to get out alot )

Everyone who lives in the North is gonna say Cannon. Everybody in the South is gonna say Whitesides. Looking Glass is definately not the tallest out East. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that Cannon is the tallest in the East. Whitesides is definately harder and scarier though.

I was climbing Moby Grape on Cannon in June '97(?) when a MASSIVE rock fall cut loose and destroyed 100 yards of forest, and the trail we hiked in on just hours before, depositing a VW sized block close to the parking lot, which must be 1/2 mile away from the wall...that was pretty fricken scary :shock:
scarier even than the runnout face climbing on whitesides :lol: and trying to rappel down the traversing orginal route in a sudden thunderstorm... :o
Whitesides does feel taller when climbing it, and i would agree that the north face of Looking Glass is the most "big wall" feeling for aid. Cannon is tallest in vertical drop, i would bet.

We, the Carolina Climbers Coalition, believe it to be Laurel Knob, NC. This gem is located near Whitesides, but is taller. It has low angle slab, steep watergrooved sections and a really overhanging central section. Last week the CCC signed a contract to purchase this nationally significant treasure, which has never been open to climbing. I just thought I'd put my 2 cents in.
This is really quite straight forward. Cathedral is 600 feet tall at its tallest point, and it longest routes are about the same. Whitehorse Ledge is 800 feet tall and because of its slabby right side, its longest route (standard route) is 1080 feet. Cannon is almost exactly 1000 fet tall, and while I don't know the exact length of the Whitney-Gillman ridge, due to its angled nature, it must be a fair bit longer that 1000 feet.
So, Cannon wins in this neck of the woods, and it is certainly the most big wall and alpine in the region (and I think is the only cliff in New England with genuine grade V climbs).
