Florida Climbers...WHY?

Its inevitable, when on a climbing trip, I run into someone who drove like 20 hours from some God awful state like Florida to climb (recently 3 nice people at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, from...well Florida.)

This is a serious question. Why are you a climber? I mean, there's no real rock for such a long distance? Why not be a surfer, or a hang glider, a cyclist....I mean really. I was lucky enough to grow up right next to a climbing area. If I had not, I would probably be a cyclist/runner or something else?

It just seems sensible to do what you have around you (competition kite flyer, wakeboarder, skater, whatever.)

Cudos to all those who drive long ways to climb on real rock.

I was in Kansas City one evening, exiting a bar. This guy, just some guy ya know? He started to get in an old Toyota pickup. There was a surfboard on the roof rack.

So of course he surrounded the fool and pummeled him to death, screaming all the while in drunken glee,

"CHARLIE DON'T SURF!"

Probably for the same reason that some French people eat hamburgers.

I get laughed at for driving to work with a surfboard on my Jeep. If Lake Erie calls for 2 footers and winds from the north at 3.30pm, you better believe I'll be out there.

I applaud anyone who drives a long distance, foregoes sleep, and even jeopardizes other responsibilities just to get in some climbing. It is the ones that build a self image around being a "rock climber" that get to me. Yes, these folks also surf, unfortunately on the internet.

I started climbing in New Orleans, LA...

yeah....Crazy

I was a gym noob for a fair amount of time, then took a road trip to HP40. This is when I became a bouldererCrazy...finally when I moved back to Europe, I had access to A LOT of rock. I started sport climbing, and doing my first muiti-pitch climbs...I am currently learning the art of placing pro.

One must start slowly and noobishly...

Dreary Erie....Wink. I don't know what I'd do with myself if I lived there (probably move).

You could always take up "open-water" swimming, or salmon fishing? Perhaps competition Kite flying? I hear thats fun (no joke, a buddy of mine just got a serious kite)

I remember a thread about "how long to your favorite crag or nearest one..."
Climbing shouldn't be about where you live, or where you're from. It's more of if you have the drive to do it. if you enjoy a sport such as climbing..you'll travel.

I'm from suburban Chicago, the tallest thing for miles are buildings which can be hard to climb? How to you rate a building anyway? And I am sure they won't let you bolt. . Frown (Sorry up way to early and have had way to much coffee)

in middle of the winter, you drive all the way to south of Brazil. Looking for the coldest weather we can get here, looking for the most snow we can get and you will find it. You will find 1 to 2 inches of snow in flat land.

then you decide to fly to Argentina, Chile or even USA or Europe. You pay a lot, you take 2 weeks from work and you do that at most twice a year. Still you are one of the many, many brazilian snowboarders I know.

What is distance anyway? nothing that can separate you from what you love.

Hah, no wonder you said that swimming wasn't a requirement for surfing in that other thread... you surf in a lake. Why?

I recently met a girl from Florida and I asked her what she does for fun. She said sex and rockclimbing. I said well there's no rock in Florida, where do you climb? She said she climbs at a gym, and asked if climbing on real rock is any different. I said no not at all. I told her I'd take her climbing on real rock if she would have sex with me. She slapped me in my face and then fucked me silly. God I love Florida climbers

Hrmph...yah, darn these good morals of mine....I was really nice to the Florida chics I met..."Though it was a little weird, the one chic kept reading me these stories about sex and other sexual/bodily oddities"

Maybe it was the same girl?

If you aren't "here to help" then why are you mis-quoting me?

I said "I wouldn't say the swimming aspect is as important as the learning how the water works in your region (but swimming is important!). "

Do you fight rips, huh uhh, it's a losing battle, flow with it, hopefully pop up and assess the situation to get to safety. (this normally entails a lot of ducking waves, holding your breath and swimming like hell) That's a risk you take.

What the F is wrong with Lake Erie??? When we were getting 5-7 feet all fall San Diego was a bath tub most days. Now it's really pickin up out there and we are still at it here.

Woah, 5-7 ft is almost getting overhead. Better get the 12 foot gun out of the quiver. Wink

I have to contend with the 3 ft. mushy wave days with my fun shape too. I have heard the lake waves can be pretty fun.

You assume that climbers you meet from FL aren't any of these? I personally love wakeboarding, skating, surfing, biking, and hot fuckin chicks in bikinis. Oh ya, then there's climbing. Maybe I'll take it serious one day and move to a more climber friendly location instead of constantly traveling... or maybe not.

ps: I sent the red route with blue stripes and black dots
