Hello Everyone,
Conservation Halton has retained consulting services to help develop a master plan, for their parks, which would inventory and assess all aspects of user groups' activities, determine the parks strengths and weaknesses, as well as future opportunities. An Open House Meeting will be held on Wed Feb 25, 2009 at 7:00 at the head office to gather user groups' feedback.
Dr. Harry Hoediono has been representing the OAC and the climbing community as a member of a technical advisory committee for Halton. He was recently interviewed by EDA Collaborative Inc. to "advise and champion climbing as a safe, eco-friendly and responsible user group." Harry has been working tirelessly with Halton over the years, most recently spearheading the Halton Bolting Project to install new anchors in the Halton Region. His team is nearly finished with Rattlesnake and will be moving on to Buffalo Crag next. Stay tuned to the OAC website for further updates on their progress.
A good turn out by the climbing community at this Open House would definitely be helpful in promoting climbing in the Halton region.

I also would have liked to have known about this before it happened. Aside from posting up here, what else was done to get the word out?
What were the results of the open house?

Hi Folks,
Due to the short notice, the OAC made posts on this and other appropriate BB's (like Halcyon, Gripped, MEC's Events BB and www.ontarioaccesscoalition.com). The HRCA had announced it publicly on their website.
There were 9 climbers (with 4 reps from the OAC, organized to ensure OAC's interests were represented at all break-out group discussions) of a total of 30 or "concerned" conservation area users and local residents.
The goal of the 'Open House' was to get feedback/ideas regarding the vision of the conservation area and what role they are to play in society.
Some of the issues raised were in regards to: "protection and enhancement of the natural environment", "environmental education", "healthy lifestyles and the outdoor recreational experience", "economic sustainability".
This was an excellent opportunity for the consultant and HRCA to hear many excellent suggestions on how users can act more responsibly in the CA's, raise revenue (HRCA is not supported by government directly and relis upon user fees for up to half their revenue), while allowing folks to enjoy opportunities in nature - and the firmly established activituy of rock climbing is just one of them.
HRCA's close cooperation with the OAC (on the bolting project and Earth Day clean-ups for example) demonstrates their commitment to ensuring future access to rock climbing at the crags.
