Hey everyone. I'm in Worcester for a couple months and looking for some climbing. Are there any decent climbing spots around that can be used this time of year? I tried to go to Purgatory Chasm but the ranger said it's closed for climbing until May 1. Any ideas for until then? Thanks.

Crow Hill and College Rock are the closest choices. Crow might still be wet in spots. People have been climbing at College for close to a month now. Depending on how far you are willing to travel there are many other choices. Just about any area from Rumney on south in the Northeast is in pretty good shape at the moment.

Thanks, are there any access restrictions at either of those locations? Fees/permits or anything? I was just in Joshua Tree for a month so I'm spoiled silly on easy of access and information. And good climbs. And good weather. But I love the NE and want to climb here too.

Not really. College Rock is a < 60 second walk from where you park. Crow Hill is a ~5 minute walk. Crow is on state land (Leominster State Park) and in theory you need a (free) permit to climb there. Practically getting the permit is not so easy - the park office where you get it is a mile or so away from the climbing parking and there are not often people there to pass out the permits. The good news is that it is very unlikely that anyone will check for a permit and if someone did come around to check they would find that 90% of the climbers don't have one and 80% didn't know they were supposed to. Beware that the scale of these places is < 1/10th of 1% of JTree. No place in the NE will come close - Gunks is the closest in scale but probably still is less then 1/4 the size of Jtree - at least in terms of area and # of routes.

Thanks for your beta, very helpful. And the warning. I know that nothing out here touches the scale of JTree other than the Gunks. It doesn't cover the area JTree does but if you go beyond the Traps you can find plenty more routes. For here, I'm just looking for something about an hour away that has enough routes to be a day crag. Sounds like Crow Hill fits that. If I want world class climbing, I can drive to Rumney or the Gunks. Or the Dax when it gets warmer. Mmmm, Adirondack rock.

Just be aware that when OE says that Crow Hill may be a bit wet still, he means it. Of all the crags in the Northeast, Crow Hill cracks seep the longest after the winter. But you said you're here for several months. By mid spring, unless it's a particularly wet spring, Crow Hill is nice and dry. GO

Ended up going for about an hour today. little windy, hopefully it will indeed be better tomorrow. I know that the Quarries aren't the greatest place in the world to climb, but it is right near my apartment and so far I enjoy what little bouldering there is there.

Damn that Falcon Guide book! Try bushwhacking from the willey house to the base of the Central Gulley Slabs on Mt Webster sometime. As heinous struggles go, I found that fairly epic.
