Yeah, I've been there and yes, it is really good rock. A lot of it is undeveloped, but there there has got to be at least 75-100 routes and potential for 10x that amount. I was surprised to see such nice granite in New Jersey.
Does anyone know what kind of rock Wawayanda is? Those are supposedly some really nice cliffs as well.
If you drive up 87 through northern Jersey, and look off into the distant hillsides, you can see granite cliffs scattered all around. Some are better than others, and some are developed, others are not.

I agree that there could be over a 100 "Tri-state areas in the country, but if you are bothering to post, then you most likely read that he's from North Jersey, which severely limits the "Tri-state" areas he might be referring to.
You are both wrong.
There is only one Tri-State Area and it is NY, PA, NJ.
Maine, NH and VT are NEW ENGLAND.
Next you're going to tell me White Plains is Up State NY. Sheesh

The info isn't adding up, the crag im thinking of near the ny thruway on the border of jersey is great, but to my knowledge it is not granite, and there is definitely not 75 - 100 routes there as previously stated. So this is leading me to believe that some are talking about another crag. Maybe i'm wrong..
edit to add - Joe, I live practically in waywayanda, there is alot of potential for climbing here. The rock in the area you mentioned consists of some decent granite and in other areas chossy loose puddingstone. The area is fun to explore. How ever I have not yet found the multi pitch routes i've heard good things about.

I wish I lived closer, because there is a LOT of land to explore, but I'll make sure to get out that way at least a few times this summer. Maybe we can meet up and exchange findings!

I87 never goes through New Jersey, although it gets close at Suffern. After the Tapp, I87 runs westward, then turns north at Suffern. I287/RT17 intersect there.
The transit cliffs are in this area, but it is closed.
There's an exit to the right for Rt 17N. If you look to the N/NE, you'll see a few crags off in the distance. That's all part of Harriman State Park, which is also closed to climbing. Most everything on the right of I87 is part of Harriman.
On the left you'll see some crags now and then, which are probably all on private land. There are some public lands to the west, notably Sterling Forest, but climbing is prohibited there.
There is probably a lot of rock that could be developed, but I suspect most of it is off-limits.

If you went to the main entrance your never going to find it, do some research on the appalachian trail hike to wawayanda mountain/ pinwheels vista. Explore that area, and if you still cant find anything to climb then idk what to tell you. If you looking for sport climbing than you won't find it in wawayanda. Routes have been climbed, but its mostly all undeveloped.
