I love how on the cover of cliffhanger, SS is climbing, with a bunch of pro hanging off him...but he has no rope? I haven't seen the movie in I while, but did he ever place that gear?

that opening sequence in MI:2 is quasi-real. It is actually Tom Cruise climbing (not blue screen or any other effect) but he's not free soloing. They used a very thin metal cable as a rope. But nonetheless, that stunt where he slides off only to grab the last ledge was pretty cool.

I learnt that you should never climb on a digitally created wall. Bad accidents happen and you might have to kill your own Dad. :o
Oh and MI-2. I actually think that it is more likely that he could do a reverse iron bar than to fall about 20 feet on slab and catch himself with one hand on a jug past the over hang. Well maybe it could be done but the free soloist that tried it would likely be a big pancake.

I've learned never to believe what hollywood tells you. Especially something about an extreme sport like climbing. But if i did learn one thing from the movie, was always listen to your dad even when he tells you to cut the rope, and don't let your snot-nosed sister tell you that you are a bad person for doing it.

I thought it was kind of funny that they climbed all day in the sun with Nitro that didn't explode, but as soon as someone radioed that sunlight makes it explode, it exploded. I also didn't know that sunlight could penetrate metal canisters.

well. i must say as fake as many movies are, they are great to watch. some exceptions of course. now which movie was it when the kid had to cut the rope???? i can't remember. and as far as nitro exploding in the sun, its more or less the heat from the sun. but if they were going to blow somthing up, they wouldn't use nitro, maybe some c4, i dunno, somthing more stable. either way. i love movies!!!!

there is no telling what sort of dangerous situations i could get into with her around
and don't even think about what would happen if she, my father, and i were in the same place at the same time....

I really like the resopnses I get from non-climbers after they have seen those movies. Like I have heard.
"Does that really happen!"
"Do you carry one of those bolt guns like on cliffhanger?"
"That was so cool when he did that thing with the ice axes! Can you do that?"
"Have you ever had to cut someones rope?"
And my reply is YES!
Don't ever climb!
These things happen all the time!

I finally learned what happened to Robin's dad (and I had NO IDEA he had a sister).
I have to admit though, Robin was a PU55Y before he met Batman.
He DID get better at climbing and rapelling though.

What I learned:
1) if the red ballpoint pen won't boil, drain some blood from your friend's corpse- which, by the way, hasn't frozen.
2) when the cute blonde girl (with no hat) haughtily snorts, "he wants to know if I can climb," you are permitted to laugh.
3) trashing on "climbing in movies" is a topic that will only be old when threads about shoes and "do you trust those acmeclimbing.com cams" officially die out. :twisted:

Lessons Learned from Vertical Limit:
-Aclimitizing is for pussies
-It's a good idea to rescue someone above 25,000 feet
-Killing your dad makes for great drama, however, make sure you watch his carcass fall to the ground
Sidenote: make sure you get his gear.
-Never climb with Chris O'donnell, he'll cut the rope just because you might pull him down.
-Dramatic situations and rock climbing are a good combination
-Don't worry about the details, moutaineering requires no details
-Billionaires are prone to take life threatening risks out of the blue
-At 25,000 feet you can still look good
-Don't be afraid to bring explosives in case you need to build a highway
-You can climb K2 in a day
-Don't forget continuous drama
-Gravity is not a factor when you can run full speed at 25,000 feet
-Oxygen is overrated, don't bother with it because it covers your face
-Don't worry about getting down the mountain, just get up the damn thing, you can take a sled down, or Chris will just cut the rope...oops.
