I think the DMM Wirelocks are the best general-purpose biners on the market, and maybe the most expensive. And, the DMM Eclipse is also a great biner, nice and big like the BD Big Easy, with super smooth gate action.

I haven't tons of experience, but the shape and feel of the clog draws works nice, and they're cheap and strong. I like the Petzl pear screw (attache?) for belay--nice round profile, and drops nicely to the tip to avoid hanging up cross wise. I hear all about petzl spirits, out of my price range right now, but a friend showed me a 10 year old well used biner and it clipped just as solid and smooth as a new one. Maby therein lies the price/quality difference! -p

if i was going to completely retro-fit my biners i'd select: BD Ovals - great for aid and racking Petzl Spirits - The best general purpose biner out there Petzl Helium - Best lightweight biner - alpine use baby! OmegaPacific D Screw-lock - cheap and bombproof i love the design of the DMM wiregate but I don't like how the nose of that biner is wide... if they could change that, it would replace the Petzl Spirit as my fav workhorse.

DMM Eclipse. By far the best biner i've ever used. Massive gate opening, easy handling, deep baskets. Especially good for ice climbing.

I'm a big fan of the Petzl Spirit carabiner. It's light and easy to clip into anchor points.

Trango Lightweight wire gate. Nothing fancy, just easy to clip and easy on the wallet.

I have quite a variety of biners, but i prefer metolius draws and omega ovals. I also have a petzl spin ball locker that is real danky. It's not too big, it's really light, and it's the strongest one I own (28 kN i think).

In reply to: I love the petzl nuetrinos, and the omega wires... For belaying and repelling, the petzl williams lock takes the cake... And of course there's nothing like the original ovals and D's, they seem to maintain their usefullness and wonderful oldschool charm... I pretty much love any biner that's mine I guess! BD makes nuetrunios haaa

Yeah, the Omeglite 4.0's are terrible biners. They snag on everything (even each other) and are hard to clip into bolts sometimes. My favorites are the BD Positron and Kong biners that have the keylock. Spirits are fine, but a little too costly to be my favorite. Kong biners tend to be little bit sticky, even when they are new. Metolius Cam lube (which is just White Lightning in a Metolius bottle) will get the gates flowing better than when they were new.

I'm gonna go with the OP Ovals. (Not the BD, yuck.) The OP screwlock D. (Cheap and stroongg!) The OP Autolock Jake. (Dig that side swingin, auto lockin action.) And Metolius 7" Quickdraws. Whoa. I never realized how much I like OP. :?

When I started out I bought Camp Aliens bent and straight gates for my draws (5 bucks each at MEC) they worked fine then MEC stopped carrying them and I went to the next cheapest Luckies they also worked fine. Now that I am no longer a starving student or an unemployed graduate I buy wire gates... I like hotwires but I'll try anything new with some cool bell or whistle. Now that I think about it I have a lot of draws but I guess thats ok I'm big I don't even feel the weight.
