This question is posed to all, regardless of your own gender or the gender that you look to for beauty.... I have begun to notice how physically attractive the sight of low body fat shoulders and arms are. I, myself, am referring to female climbers, but I wonder if others feel the same way. I find myself thinking (when noticing Pamela Anderson style person), "She looks so soft. I'll bet she couldn't do a 5.4 slab." btw: I have too much body fat, but I am working on reducing it. Of course, as I have lost weight, I look better to myself as well.

I totally agree. Since taking up climbing a couple of years ago my idea of a beautiful woman has changed. Now my dream girl has chalk smeared on her face, veins popping out of her forearms from redponting a 5.13, sunburnt shoulders, and hands that would make a manacurist scream. If you fit this image let me know, I'm single.

I have noticed over the last year while my upper body was getting more defined that people ( male climbers mostly) would comment about " hey, great back muscles....or great triceps. I always was in decent shape, but as my muscles have become more defined, climber guys are commenting. My female non climber friends think I'm crazy for climbing, but what do they know, they are non climbers :)

My perception of beauty has always been a little different. I don't really find climbing girls' bodies more attractive than non climbers', though I have always prefered an atheletic look in women. But deep attraction for me truly now requires a strong mind attatched to the body. Yes... I 'm a freak. Got to hell.

Yes. I've come to realize that body fat % plays almost no role whatsoever in terms of beauty. I'm not anywhere near as picky as I used to be. Growing up, that. What a fool someone would be, to pass up on a soul mate, because she had the "fleshies" hanging from the bottom of her arm, or suffered a 25% body fat ratio. What a damned fool that person will be when they find and marry that beauty queen, only to discover said beauty really is only skin deep. And what a goddamned fool that man will remain, who would continue to suffer the presence of a beauty queen he hates all in the name of vanity. Now if the beauty queen is also a penthouse model of great renown, forget all that damned fool talk. GO FOR IT AND BE HAPPY, FOOL! DMT

I climbed about a year and a half before I started viscerally associating the climber’s body with beauty. That was how long it took me to really start to understand how much work, effort, obsession and joy has to go into climbing before the rock has time and opportunity to shape a person’s back into the topography we all know and love. I suppose there is beauty in those muscles themselves, but it originated in the passion that created them. Before I started climbing I always associated high levels of muscular development with weight lifting or body building, a passion which I just do not grok. Every once in a while I will still notice the difference between a body built for climbing and a body built by weights and the latter still does not strike me as beautiful.

There used to be this girl that climbed very gracefully and she looked really great - lean and strong, but feminine. Her movements were very graceful on the wall. But she's been bouldering on plastic very hard for the past half a year and her body looks a little too butch for my taste now - slightly hunched, broader looking shoulders. Even her posture and climbing style looks kinda masculine now. I like different types - lean, soft, tall, petite,... but if the lady starts to look like Mr.Universe, then... not for me.

Right on Crimpmaster! After climbing for a while, I have caught myself checking out a girl's arms almost before anything else. I'm thinking "Dang! I bet she'd make a great climber!" or "yeah, she's not to bad, but I bet she couldn't even get up a 5.5" My friends think I'm crazy, but those strong arm girls are where it's at. But not huge bulging muscles, just strong and defined.

I've devolped a fascination/appreciation for the form of the hatha yoga adept more than the burly climber form. But I find a woman who can keep her cool in a heady climbing situation amazingly attractive, almost irrestible.

i like having cut arms. however, i wear sleeves around my mom now because she gets such a sad look on her face when she sees them. in her mind cut arms = too masculine = i'll never get a man = she'll never get grandchildren. don't worry - i've been working on getting her out to the rock. once that happens, she'll change her tune ...

For me, physical attraction is not that important. It is the first step but after that there is so much more. As an athlete my entire life, I've only ever really gone for the athletic types. We understand each other better. It doesn't work out with non-athletic girls, they like the climber and triathlete body but don't understand why I don't want to go to the club, or hang out at the bar. "Well baby, there's a cost to everything" If we are being completely superficial though, the runner who climbs a bit. So hot, so alive, so sexy... Becky why did you dis me? :(

I had this boss, whom I'll be seeing this weekend. He likes to expound upon his social theories to a captive audience, ie his employees. One of the countless observations my dear boss made was this. It seems he read a news article about a study. The study found that beautiful people attract one another. They tend to be found together, hanging out as it were. And conversely, beautiful people don't want to hang around ugly people. So the net effect is the uglies hang with the uglies and the beauts hang with the beauts. Now my boss quickly observed that this theory was easily borne out in the demographics of the various surburbs around Sacramento, where we both live. He contended that Auburn had a lot of beautiful people. THerefore property values were higher. Auburn is where he lives. Then he mentioned Citrus Heights, Rio Linda and Elk Grove as examples of where one could expect to find lots of ugly people. Property values in those places were correspondingly low. Now to my boss, this signified to the "up and comer" where one should set one's aims for the next house. He felt strongly, feels strongly and will continue to do so that if you want to become rich and famous you have to live in the same neighborhoods. "Dingus, you need to get out of Elk Grove!" Was his conclusion. Ah....... Now I will leave you, dear reader, to deduct what it is my boss had really just said about me, but I don't think I need to draw a picture. Anyway! There is certainly something to the practical notion that beautiful people have doors held open for them that ugly people never even know exist. Climbing. Sometimes they go climbing. To stay on topic old boy. DMT

my tastes have changed snce i have started climbing. I guess thats because it is my girlfriend that got me climbing. at first i just thought she was the most awesome girlfriend ever, she was dirty and gnarly and not preoccupied with looks all the time so it was cool to have a girl that could hang with the guys. after i started climbing i began to appreciate the more subtle things that used to turn me off, for example the calauses (spelling?) on her hands, i love em now.

Dingus, You've got nothing on my various theories that cannot be disproved: "The world revolves around me" theory - based on the premise that when an individual looks left, it's not the individual looking left, but the entire plane of their existence moving right. We all live in our little bubbles where this works, the world constantly shifting to meet our perception, and only when we touch another being do we share the same plane. "The Pyramid of Popularity" - come along with me as I categorize people into the A list on down to the D list and show how lonely it is at the top, but how everyone still seems to know who you are "The Theory of Attractability" - People who are equal in attraction on one level or another will come along to fill the void. Which explains why only 4% of the male population I find datable. See pyramid of popularity. (JUUUUST kidding). "The Bad Music Brings War Theory" - Good music after WWI, WWII, Viet Nam, Korea, Gulfwar, and hey . . . I think Britney and the Backstreets are dimming blips on the horizon. Bring on musical genius! Thanks Bush, Osama, and Saddam! And others! Spend time with maculated and you'll get an earful eventually.

today i go to this mom and pop climbing and outdoors store to buy one of those bulletproof bags that i can drag behind my truck. i race in there and go to where i know the bags live. she kindly and alittle shyly says hello and asked if she can help me. she has really pretty brown eyes! we look through the duffles and she answeres some questions... and then we chat about some people she knows that live in san diego... and the whole time im am wondering if she likes to climb... or would like to try... then i left. i will have to figure out something else to buy and go and ask her these questions... and maybe see if she would like to go to dinner with yours truely i think i would have always found her attractive...

beauty, to me, is mental and physical hardness. it is a woman who works out regularly and without fail; she takes care of her body; climbs and skis passionately; doesn't mind losing sleep or going hungry on a long route; carries a heavy pack on a long approach; likes to get dirty; and, above all, who, during the longest approach or the coldest bivy or the biggest off-route snafu, never -- [i:8c4eeba571]ever[/i:8c4eeba571] -- even [i:8c4eeba571]thinks [/i:8c4eeba571]about b*tching. yeah ... i like that.

I used to worry that by getting more muscular, I was making myself less attractive shall we say, to members of the opposite sex. Then I realised that the people that would find it attractive i.e. climbers, surfers, are the only people I would want to go out with. Why be with someone who feels threatened by the fact that I am a strong, if not quite fearless, female?

In reply to: beauty, to me, is mental and physical hardness. it is a woman who works out regularly and without fail; she takes care of her body; climbs and skis passionately; doesn't mind losing sleep or going hungry on a long route; carries a heavy pack on a long approach; likes to get dirty; and, above all, who, during the longest approach or the coldest bivy or the biggest off-route snafu, never -- ever -- even thinks about b*tching. yeah ... i like that. that's not beauty, that's perfection

In reply to: Dingus, You've got nothing on my various theories that cannot be disproved: "The world revolves around me" theory - based on the premise that when an individual looks left, it's not the individual looking left, but the entire plane of their existence moving right. We all live in our little bubbles where this works, the world constantly shifting to meet our perception, and only when we touch another being do we share the same plane. Living in the Land of the San Andreas means the right slip perception is all too true.
In reply to: And others! Spend time with maculated and you'll get an earful eventually. Girl, I've been in love with you since you started talking about partying in heels and going climbing the next day. I would love to hear more! Hehe. (i would...) DMT

no, actually my perception of physicall attractiveness hasn't changed because of climbing. it has changed over the years, of course, but for other reasons. If i found someone attractive 10 years ago, it doesn't mean that i would find them attractive now.

I've always liked girls with low body fat. Not the ones with low body muscle though. Form reflects function. I like a girl that can climb with me, or hike with me, or bike with me. A fat girl probably couldn't do all those things. Then again, an anorexic girl couldn't either. A girls form that reflects the function's I want it to achieve  is true beauty to me.

I am deffinetly attracted to strong women (note, not only do I find pamela anderson unattractive, come on, she has hepititus, doesn't make her a bad person, but no way NO WAY am I getting in bed with her), I can't really say if climbing has changed what I see as attractive, I started climbing when I was pretty young, long before I really had a perception of beauty, I've had girlfriends in all shapes and sizes, and I can genuinely say I like them all, but if I could pick, I'd go for an athletic woman, without steroids I've never seen a woman get so muscled that I found her unattractive (corey everson is hot in my book) I disagree about the climbing bodies being better though, I think the difference is actually in what people are working for when they exercise, I think people who are pushing for athletic preformance type goals end up being more aesthetically pleasing than people that are just trying to look better, example, body builders versus power lifters, or models versus volley ball players, kind of like that, but I'm a function over form kind of guy

However there is a downside to cut climber chics, no matter how attractive: MAN HANDS!!! pssssssssssssssssssss. (sound of deflating body part) Yuck

What a fun bunch! I am married to a non-climber who is the most beautiful woman I have ever known. She is a little heavier than when first met (she was too thin back then), but the weight came from having our 5 kids. She works out regularly and smiles at me in a way that really grabs me. I agree that beauty is not the key, but it does get noticed. It really helps when your mate actually is beautiful. I have learned to appreciate beauty in others without desiring them.

that was a funny episode, but seriously, get over it dude and no ones hands are that gnarled, after a day pulling on some rough stuff, okay, because they're dry, put some lotion on them, who cares besides, if I had to pic between a woman with soft but limp dead fish hands, and a woman who climbed that had strong hands with some calouses, I'd take the climber any day, shake hands with a masusse some time, they don't have limp dead fish hands, not the good ones anyway

ha ha, being of a culture which colors outside the lines, I'll respond based on my first interpretation of this question... at first, I believed Joshua Tree to be the most beautiful rock area. I felt other places, while different, did not compare. I like the surreal and porcupine-stickly bizarre barren beauty of the place. (alternative like Johnny Depp or Kevin Spacey or Helena Bonam Carter) but then a friend invited me to Yosemite (who others had warned had too much of a Disney, tourist feel) and I fell in love with quite another, more mainstream but dazzling beauty. the pure height and smooth walls just inspire you to want to reach inside yourself and draw all your reserves. (mainstream like Tom Cruise or Claudia Shiffer - sp?) on a tangent, a well-defined back is a beautiful thing...

My perception of beauty did change over years for different reasons, not solely because of climbing. Climbing, however, made me totally obsessed about arms. I get quite crazy when I see huge forearms, and strong arms with veins running all over. I think they remind me of climbing.

Hell yeah, buff girl climbers rule. Before I started climbing, I never looked in the mirror and thought "wow, my arm muscles are getting bigger!" Now I get comments on my back muscles in the gym and weird looks from my non-climber friends when I talk about how I wish my arm muscles were bigger..... :D - Climber chick stuck in the midwest

Jeez. Lookit all this verbal masturbation! :P Can I also talk about my lats? (but, FYI, I actually DO have them). I've never been conventionally attractive, nor have I ever been so left of center as to join the freaky-hot ranks of Helena Bonham Carter or old-school Winona Ryder. By the numbers, climbing and getting a climber's definition hasn't changed how attractive I am to the opposite sex (or the same sex, whatever). I yam what I yam, which is just an island of weird chick, with strong fingers on the side. Climbers as a whole have an advantage to me, but not exclusively; likewise, plenty of climber dudes think I am a freak, but just as many "normal" guys thought so before I started climbing. But it's all good. Dingus- I know Lodi is in San J. county, but I can guarantee you where it'd go in your boss' theory!

i would like to mention the fact that beauty is not just about what someone looks like. sure, a climber who is fit and muscular shows dedication to the sport, and that is attractive. though physical beauty is attractive, it takes a brilliant mind, a kind heart, and an awesome personality to keep me interested in a person. or maybe i am just an insane freak and beauty is the only real thing that matters. :?

I think scars on the elbows and shoulder blades are beautiful. But seriously, there is the chick that the mainstream finds attractive and that you would want to bed, and there's the chick that I find attractive that I would like to spend a lot of time with and not have to think about bedding because I am so happy just being with them. The bedding is nice, but if you can make a connection before the sex, then the sex is all the better. Definately attractiveness is more than outward appearance personally. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

Anyone who makes me feel alive and happy in their presence is attractive. I've been on both sides of the scale, sought after for someone's superficial desire and I have also sought after people for superficial reasons. I learned that that only crashes and burns. Unconsciously, I was seeking after a balance that could only be found in myself. I've had the super hot girlfriend and the super smart girlfriend and lots of others... until finally, after I wasn't even seeking it anymore, the right one arrived. I think Dingus's original post hit the nail on the head.

Hah! This is great! What a conglomeration of opinions of beauty, and I love it. I feel like half these posts are directed straight for me! The bulk from becoming a boulderer, disgustingly calloused hands, scars from shoving my hands and body in unfortunately painful cracks...geez...and I find that my passion for it all obliterates whether I feel attractive to the opposite sex. However, my gnarled hands and body do make me feel incredibly feminine, and I don't really know why. I think it's the way I feel on the rock. Because after it all, I still love to flirt!

I'd have to agree with sharpender & moabbeth...the shaggy haired hippie guys are great!!! The interesting thing is, even before I started climbing, those were the guys that caught my eye (love, LOVE, shaggy hair). Guess I got lucky that I happen to be obssessed with a sport with a more than average ratio of them hangin' around. But ultimately, attraction comes when I can find someone that shares my interest in climbing and the outdoors, otherwise I'd never see them anyway... In ref. to how I perceive myself, since I've started climbing, I come to appreciate the veins running up my forearms that never had before, knowing how much work it took to get em' there. They've become something I'm proud of, rather than grossed out by.

In reply to: Members of the opposite sex that are respectable climbers seem much more attractive than they would if I had just seen them on the street or something. We in the running community call this phenomenon "speed goggles".....you see a girl win a race or something, and she automatically is more hot than before. Climbers need a term for it too.....

After climbing, especially gym climbing, I always find myself checking other beautiful "hard-bodied" ladies sending routes I can't even do! As soon as I realize there better than me, I also realize that I'm not "worthy" enough to talk to them unless I'm sending the 5.12+ routes with ease! It's sooo true. I don't even bother to approach sexy female climbers that are good...it's the ones who aren't so good that I work on...heheh  Honestly though, climbing has not changed my perspective at all...NOTHING, I mean NOTHING compares to a downhome cowgirl in tight wranglers :!:

As a former (Grateful) Deadhead, I have a built in fondness for hippie guys. Only climber hippie guys tend to have better bods and smell like good hard-earned body sweat instead of patchouli  ! 25 years ago, I ran river trips in the Tetons and on the Colorado river. We used to sing a song that went something like this: “Mary Anne Barns is the queen of all the acrobats She can do the tricks that will give the guys the shizts She can shoot green peas from her fundamental orifice Do a summersault and caught it on her tit. She’s a great big son-of-a-bitch, twice as big as me With the hairs on her ass like the branches on a tree She can hunt, fish, fight, fuck, pull a train and drive a truck. That’s the kind of girl that’s gonna marry me. P.S. 22 years of happily married latter - ya don't want to mess with moma bear!

Yes. Sticking with the opposite sex theme, the longer I do this, the wider the category becomes, and the more women I find beautiful. But maybe it has less to do with climbing than it has to do with age, and experience. JV

In reply to: I have noticed over the last year while my upper body was getting more defined that people ( male climbers mostly) would comment about " hey, great back muscles....or great triceps. I always was in decent shape, but as my muscles have become more defined, climber guys are commenting.
