The only thing worse than people listening to music at the crag is people listening to Steely Dan at the crag. shudder I'd even take REO stationwagon over that!

A story similar to that of Dingus... While climbing at Josh, right at the intersection area of HVG some clowns were jamming "oh sherry" by Steve Perry. My partner was leading and getting sketched at the climb and pissed off by the shitty music. He reaches down deep inside, sticks in some pro and all is well. He is so relieved he yells out "Fuck you Steve Perry!" at the top of his lungs. The music didn't stop, but that was one of the funnier climbing memories I have. Loud music at the crags sucks and is totally uncalled for.

Haha, loud shitty music at the crag!!! Ever climb at Potrero? When I was there last May rarely ever was there not at least one extremely crappy Mexican car full of old home stereo speakers blaring distorted polka as loud as it would go. Way worse than REO speedwagon, about on par with steely dan.

whats the big deal with playing music at the local spot? i love listening to music when i climb. yeah, i can wear headphones, but what if my buddies wanna listen to the same shit? it gets the crew in a good vibe, and makes it even funner. i'm sure you grade number crunching people don't understand, cuz all you care about it how many 5.14's you've climbed. if it's too loud, ask them to turn it down. if they don't, shoot yourself in the foot for not brining your OWN music. or, buy some ear plugs. getting your panties in a twist about it won't help.

I drive 8 to 12 hours to get to a crag. I can listen to the Eagles or even Lawrence f'ckn Welk at work or in the car anytime. The reason I drive the 8 to 12 hours is to climb and be in Nature. I want to hear the birds, the wind in the trees, and my partner saying, "Watch me!" Leave the jams at home, PLEASE. (Unless you are bouldering. You wear the beanie, you play the tunes.)

i was climbing at ruth lake out in the uintas, a relatively serene quite and chill setting. beautiful alpine views everywhere. some dude is blasting some music. i politely asked him to turn it off---something like, "if you wouldn't mind turning your music off i'd really appreciate it..." figuring i could give him all the myriad reasons why if he said no. he looked at me squirly, like why the fuck should i turn my music off? for almost an entire minute, awkward as hell. but he did turn it off. climbing isn't about the send, its about me, the rock, my partner and the environment. if i want a good workout some brah's and some tunes i go to the gym. no worries. i love that shit, just not the only reason i climb. and listen to all the music you want around the campfire with some cold suds---i'll come join ya. just not out there, at the crag.

Most of the spots that I climb at here in AK are so far out of the way, and there are so few other people that might even show up, you can play whatever you want and not only will no one complain, no one will even know. Not that I support listening to music at the Crag (which I don't), but it's AK. You get to kind of do what you want... hosh.

Well first off, I am not a fan of music while I am climbing, however,I also think it is closed minded to call someone juvenile for doing it. Everyone has things they love and things they hate, everyone has their own taste's, but to say one is right and another is wrong....thats bullshit. I have some friends who love to listen to music while climbing....it relaxes them. I don't mind it when their climbing because its their deal. When I'm getting on the rock I ask them to turn it off and they gladly do it. Playing music at a crag, in a national park, or anywhere for that matter is not wrong, and i seriously doubt,(unless in close proximity to housing) it affects access as much as climbers shitting everywhere, stashing gear, yelling words of encouregment or other dumb shit some climbers may do. Plain and simple, if the music is bothering you, politely ask them to turn it off.(I have personally done so, with friends and in other situations) Most people will turn it off. Honestly your talking about people growing up and not playing music, i'm saying grow up and ask them politely rather than gripe about it. Now under the circumstance that they are dick heads, "accidently" drop a rock on thier shit......if they don't have the courtesy to adhere to your simple request, I say they deserve it. Oh and yes there are always "special circumstances" for EVERYTHING, so if the music really is an access issue, make them aware of it.

I think it's less of an access issue, especially at a place like Jtree where it's less than quiet anyhow, and more of a safety issue since there is almostly always more than one party and hearing your partner can be an issue even when there isn't music. It's just common courtesy to leave it at home.

Part of me loves that crappy mexican music. Nostalgia for the place maybe. Those locals are right cool folks too! More than once I've gotten of a climb there parched as fuck, only to have a couple come over with some cold beers. Nik

It would be easy for the NPS to shut down climbing there, just like the banned bolting (essentialy climbing) in the barker dam area...for tourists. you will ruin access with music....yes you will.

IK'm a big fan of Babarossa Justice. If this puzzles you perhaps you'll watch the Willie Nelson western about an outlaw bandit. Anyway.... sneak into thier camp at night and bury their stereo, leaving just the edge of a speaker and an antenna (if it has one) sticking out of the ground. When the find it in the morning there will be consternation and a great gnashing of teeth and as one their heads will turn skyways and they will curse your name.... BARBAROSS! Its the only effective self-policing method in the high deserts. Word. Bury some tweakers up to their heads! Walley and the Beave would have if they thought of it first. DMT

Only on rc.com could we take a couple of isolated non-events and turn them into the loss of access for all. Anyway, wasn't the boombox era more related to the lycra-clad sportos in the 80's/early 90's?

The OP reminds me of someone posting a "missed connection" on craigslist. "Hey, I thought you were hot, but I was way too much of a pussy to talk to you. However, I'm posting on the internet because I assume that everyone reads craigslist, and it makes me feel better about being too much of a pussy to ask you out."

Nah. Music won't affect access. The whole access threat is part of the trad taliban credo to stifle activity they don't like. Now, a surefire way to avoid that pesky music listening white trash is to go somewhere that isn't n00b central (ie, NOT thin wall) that has more than a 5 minute walk from the road.
